More orange than blue... Another "strange thing from my kitchen" for Macro Monday. A silicone lid/sieve/drainer/trivet/splatter guard. It's used mainly as a lid for the frying pan to prevent a grease disaster. What you see is the center of the lid, the size of the area is 2,5 cm (0,984252 inches), the tiny holes are 1 mm (0,0393701 inches) in diameter. The blue is the daylight shining through the holes.
Thank you for your kind comments, I appreciate every single one, and your faves! Vielen Dank für Eure tollen Kommentare und Faves!
A Happy Macro Monday, Everyone!
The common minke whale or northern minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) is a species of minke whale within the suborder of baleen whales.
It is the smallest species of the rorquals and the second smallest species of baleen whale. Although first ignored by whalers due to its small size and low oil yield, it began to be exploited by various countries beginning in the early 20th century.
As other species declined larger numbers of common minke whales were caught, largely for their meat. It is now one of the primary targets of the whaling industry. There is a dwarf form in the Southern Hemisphere.
Common minke whales are among the most robust members of their genus, the greatest height of their body being one-fifth their total length. They have a narrow, pointed, triangular rostrum with a low splashguard.
Their prominent, upright, falcate dorsal fin averages about 30 cm (12 in) in height – range 7 to 77 cm (2.8 to 30.3 in) – and is set about two-thirds the way along the back. They are dark grey dorsally and clean white ventrally.

This was taken on a cloudless, windless day in Antarctica's Weddell Sea where we saw dozens of whales and seals. This photograph shows two Fin Whales gently surfacing together. Fin Whales are the second largest whale on the planet. The front animal has taken a breath and is heading back below the surface so the fin, way back on the body, shows briefly. The back animal is just surfacing and you can see the splashguard around its blowholes to the left. But its fin will not show until it starts to dive again. I cold weather when whales have taken a huge breath, the blow at the surface can be large, conspicuous and long-lasting (like your breath on a cold, still day. But the whales were so leisurely on this unusually warm, windless day there was hardly a blow to be seen.
Rain falls for centuries
Soaking the loose rocks in space
Sweet rain, the fire's out
The black snag glistens in the rain
& the last wisp of smoke floats up

Usually I don't buy bikes as a impulse purchase. But when we discoverd this bike I thought by myself, that it would be great to have a bike with splashguards, installed light with a hub dynamo and a carrier. Think I reach adulthood, because my other bikes are fun bikes, not compatible with the Traffic Code ;-)
Of course I will use the other bikes as well.
The Bryde's whale is a baleen whale, more specifically a rorqual belonging to the same group as blue whales and humpback whales. It has twin blowholes with a low splashguard to the front. Like other rorquals, it has no teeth, but has two rows of baleen plates.
Bryde's whales closely resemble their close relative the sei whale. They are remarkably elongated (even more so than fin whales), with the greatest height of the body being one seventh their total length—compared to 1/6.5 to 1/6.75 in fin whales and only 1/5.5 in sei whales.
Bryde's are dark smoky grey dorsally and usually white ventrally, whereas sei whales are often a galvanized blue-grey dorsally and have a variably sized white patch on the throat, a posteriorly oriented white anchor-shaped marking between the pectoral fins, and are blue-grey beyond the anus—although Bryde's off South Africa can have a similar irregular white patch on the throat. Bryde's have a straight rostrum with three longitudinal ridges that extend from the blowholes, where the auxiliary ridges begin as depressions, to the tip of the rostrum.
The sei whale, like other rorquals, has a single median ridge, as well as a slightly arched rostrum, which is accentuated at the tip. Bryde's usually have dark grey lower jaws, whereas sei whales are lighter grey. Bryde's have 250–370 pairs of short, slate grey baleen plates with long, coarse, lighter grey or white bristles that are 40 cm (16 in) long by 20 cm (7.9 in) wide, while sei whales have longer, black or dark grey baleen plates with short, curling, wool-like bristles.
Bryde's whales have an upright, falcate dorsal fin that is up to 46.25 cm (18.21 in) in height, average 34.4 cm (13.5 in), and is usually between 30 and 37.5 cm (11.8 and 14.8 in). It is often frayed or ragged along its rear margin and located about two-thirds of the way along the back. The broad, centrally notched tail flukes rarely break the surface. The flippers are small and slender

“Eating fresh fruit when it's in season.”
This was another first for me. It took about 3 tries to get this one shot. Three rounds that is. It’s natural light, late in the day between 7-8pm, but I did have a flash at the ready if needed. I didn’t have any cream so on the last round we added baby formula (Max didn’t mind) to the 2% milk to make it thicker. For a splashguard, I used a big piece of glass in front of the camera.

Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus) Blowhole and splashguard. Sea of Cortez, Baja California Sur, Mexico.
The blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) is a marine mammal belonging to the baleen whales (Mysticeti). At up to 30 metres (98 ft) in length and with a maximum recorded weight of 173 tonnes (190 short tons) and probably reaching over 181 tonnes (200 short tons), it is the largest animal known to have ever existed.
Long and slender, the blue whale's body can be various shades of bluish-grey dorsally and somewhat lighter underneath. There are at least three distinct subspecies: B. m. musculus of the North Atlantic and North Pacific, B. m. intermedia of the Southern Ocean and B. m. brevicauda (also known as the pygmy blue whale) found in the Indian Ocean and South Pacific Ocean. B. m. indica, found in the Indian Ocean, may be another subspecies. As with other baleen whales, its diet consists almost exclusively of small crustaceans known as krill.
Blue whales were abundant in nearly all the oceans on Earth until the beginning of the twentieth century. For over a century, they were hunted almost to extinction by whalers until protected by the international community in 1966. A 2002 report estimated there were 5,000 to 12,000 blue whales worldwide, in at least five groups.
The IUCN estimates that there are probably between 10,000 and 25,000 blue whales worldwide today. Before whaling, the largest population was in the Antarctic, numbering approximately 239,000 (range 202,000 to 311,000). There remain only much smaller (around 2,000) concentrations in each of the eastern North Pacific, Antarctic, and Indian Ocean groups. There are two more groups in the North Atlantic, and at least two in the Southern Hemisphere. As of 2014, the Eastern North Pacific blue whale population had rebounded to nearly its pre-hunting population.
he blue whale has a long tapering body that appears stretched in comparison with the stockier build of other whales. The head is flat, U-shaped and has a prominent ridge running from the blowhole to the top of the upper lip. The front part of the mouth is thick with baleen plates; around 300 plates, each around one metre (3.3 feet) long, hang from the upper jaw, running 0.5 m (20 in) back into the mouth. Between 70 and 118 grooves (called ventral pleats) run along the throat parallel to the body length. These pleats assist with evacuating water from the mouth after lunge feeding.
The dorsal fin is small; its height averages about 28 centimetres (11 in), and usually ranges between 20 and 40 cm (7.9 and 15.7 in), though it can be as small as 8 cm (3.1 in) or as large as 70 cm (28 in). It is visible only briefly during the dive sequence. Located around three-quarters of the way along the length of the body, it varies in shape from one individual to another; some only have a barely perceptible lump, but others may have prominent and falcate (sickle-shaped) dorsals. When surfacing to breathe, the blue whale raises its shoulder and blowhole out of the water to a greater extent than other large whales, such as the fin or sei whales. Observers can use this trait to differentiate between species at sea. Some blue whales in the North Atlantic and North Pacific raise their tail fluke when diving. When breathing, the whale emits a vertical single-column spout, typically 9 metres (30 ft) high, but reaching up to 12 metres (39 ft). Its lung capacity is 5,000 litres (1,300 US gal). Blue whales have twin blowholes shielded by a large splashguard.
The flippers are 3–4 metres (9.8–13.1 ft) long. The upper sides are grey with a thin white border; the lower sides are white. The head and tail fluke are generally uniformly grey. The whale's upper parts, and sometimes the flippers, are usually mottled. The degree of mottling varies substantially from individual to individual. Some may have a uniform slate-grey colour, but others demonstrate a considerable variation of dark blues, greys and blacks, all tightly mottled.
Blue whales can reach speeds of 50 kilometres per hour (31 mph) over short bursts, usually when interacting with other whales, but 20 kilometres per hour (12 mph) is a more typical traveling speed. Satellite telemetry of Australian pygmy blue whales migrating to Indonesia has shown that they cover between 0.09 and 455.8 kilometers (0.056 and 283.221 miles) per day. When feeding, they slow down to 5 kilometres per hour (3.1 mph).
Blue whales typically swim at a depth of about 13 meters (43 feet) when migrating in order to eliminate drag from surface waves. The deepest confirmed dive is 506 meters (1,660 feet).
Blue whales most commonly live alone or with one other individual. It is not known how long traveling pairs stay together. In locations where there is a high concentration of food, as many as 50 blue whales have been seen scattered over a small area. They do not form the large, close-knit groups seen in other baleen species.

I expected this to be newer due to the "Finale" sticker on the tailgate. Nice wheeltrims though, and "splashguards" all round.

Possibly the nicest Stilo I've ever seen, this one is a stark contrast to what has become a disposable banger. I don't think I've ever seen those mud flaps/splashguards before, but they add to the impression of a very caring owner.

Step A) Asbestos abatement contractor claims the black floor tile mastic has been sufficiently removed.
Step B) Third-party independent consultant asbestos professional indicates ACM mastic abatement is incomplete and recommends further cleaning.
Step C) Repeat steps A & B indefinitely, until asbestos mastic is actually no longer visible.
This image was taken from the Helipad on the Navigator of the Seas near the Island of San Miguel in the Azores.
This is where the Blue Whale's blowholes are located. The blow when they came up for a breath must have shot up to about 6m, in one tall straight blow. We were lucky to be close enough to hear the great whoosh as they exhaled at the surface.
1) Remove the bottom, passenger-side splashguard. There are a number of these plastic rivets which you must pry out. It is not easy and you may break them and need new ones. I used a forked staple remover to get under the head and pry.

Thomas helps keep potty training on track with fun train sounds and a tune to reward every success—and it “grows” with your child’s training, too! First it’s a potty seat with a built-in sensor that knows when to reward success with fun train sounds and music. Then, when your child’s ready to transition to the toilet, the potty ring removes for use on most toilet seats. Built-in potty ring handles on a seat that’s just their size help toddlers feel secure on a big toilet, making the transition easier for everyone. And the base converts to a sturdy step stool that helps children climb aboard the toilet, and reach the sink to wash hands!

I cut this heavy plastic film to fit. It's notched to make room for the zipties that hold the basket down. Only that front part is kind of flapping loose. Will it rattle in the wind? Will it whistle? Or sing? We'll see
The Blue Whale is a marine mammal belonging to the baleen whales, and and is the largest creature ever known to have lived on earth. They may attain a length of as much as 98 ft (30 m) and weigh as much as 380,000 lbs (172,365 kg)! Long and slender, the body of the Blue Whale can be various shades of bluish-grey dorsally and somewhat lighter underneath. There are at least three distinct subspecies, in several oceans:
- B. m. musculus of the North Atlantic and North Pacific,
- B. m. intermedia of the Southern Ocean and
- B. m. brevicauda (also known as the pygmy blue whale) found in the Indian Ocean and South Pacific Ocean.
The Blue Whale has a long tapering body that appears stretched in comparison with the stockier build of other whales. The head is flat, U-shaped and has a prominent ridge running from the blowhole to the top of the upper lip. The front part of their mouth is thick with baleen plates; around 300 plates hang from the upper jaw, running approximately 1.6 ft (0.5 m) back into the mouth.
Between 70 and 118 grooves (called ventral pleats) run along the throat parallel to the body length. When surfacing to breathe, the blue whale raises its shoulder and blowhole out of the water to a greater extent than other large whales, such as the fin or sei whales. The Blue Whale has a lung capacity of 1,320 gallons (5,000 liters). Some blue whales in the North Atlantic and North Pacific raise their tail fluke when diving.
Blue Whale Description and Behavior
When breathing, the whale emits copious quantities of water. Blue Whales have twin blowholes shielded by a large splashguard. The upper sides of their body is grey with a thin white border; the lower sides are white. The head and tail fluke are generally uniformly grey. The whale's upper parts, and sometimes the flippers, are usually mottled. The degree of mottling varies substantially from individual to individual. Some may have a uniform slate-grey color, but others demonstrate a considerable variation of dark blues, greys and blacks, all tightly mottled.
Blue whales can reach speeds of as much as 31 mph (50 kph) over short bursts, usually when interacting with other whales, but 12 mph (20 kph) is a more typical traveling speed. When feeding, they slow down to about 3 mph (5 kph). Blue whales most commonly live alone or with one other individual. It is not known how long traveling pairs stay together.
Blue Whale Feeding Habits
In locations where there is a high concentration of food, as many as 50 blue whales have been seen scattered over a small area. They do not form the large, close-knit groups seen in other baleen species. Blue whales feed almost exclusively on krill, though they also take small numbers of copepods. An adult blue whale can eat up to 40 million krill in a day! The whales always feed in the areas with the highest concentration of krill, sometimes eating up to 7,900 lbs (3,600 kg) of krill in a single day.
The whale feeds by lunging forward at groups of krill, taking the animals and a large quantity of water into its mouth. The water is then squeezed out through the baleen plates by pressure from the ventral pouch and tongue. Once the mouth is clear of water, the remaining krill, unable to pass through the plates, are swallowed. The blue whale also incidentally consumes small fish, crustaceans and squid caught up with krill. #ourbreathingplanet

Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus). Close up of blowhole / rostrum and chracteristic blow. Sea of Cortez, Baja California, Mexico. From one of my memorable trips onboard the 'Spirit of Adventure' with Mark Carwardine.
