The People's History Museum, Manchester, Greater Manchester, UK
The People's History Museum charts the experiences, achievements, and struggles of the ordinary folk of Manchester and the surrounding area. See the development of political movements arising from the Roundheads and Cavaliers of the 17th century Civil War.
Read about the violent suppression of a workers' demonstration in 1819 when on the orders of William Hulton, chief Magistrate, the cavalry, with drawn sabres, killed 15 people and injured a further 700 at the present site of the Free Trade Hall in the city centre: the Peterloo Massacre. This horrific incident led to Acts of Parliament banning demonstrations and the formation of the Manchester Guardian newspaper, today called The Guardian.
See the birth of the trades unions from earlier guilds and secret societies. Votes for women, the rise of the Labour party, and the corruption and lies of the Tories and Whigs are all displayed here.
The 1960s Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, is here caricatured for the TV programme, Spitting Image. These almost life size puppets were operated by clever men and women to a soundtrack provided by comic mime artists.
Wilson's 1963 speech to the Labour Party Conference showed him as quick witted and pragmatic. Speaking of the increase in technology and the use of computers in manufacture and commerce, he said,
"The Britain that is going to be forged in the white heat of this revolution will be no place for restrictive practices or for outdated methods on either side of industry."
This was a far cry from the traditional Socialist stance, and his forward and innovative thinking gained him many followers and not a few enemies from within his own party.

Spitting Image was a British satirical puppet show which ran on the ITV television network from 1984 to 1996. It was produced by Spitting Image Productions for Central Television. The series was nominated for 10 BAFTA Awards, winning one for editing in 1989.
The series featured puppet caricatures of numerous celebrities who were famous during the 1980s and 1990s. The humour was usually strong and bitingly sharp. British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, then American president Ronald Reagan, and the British Royal Family were the most prominent targets, although hundreds of other celebrities were targeted in an equally disrespectful manner.
Certain countries have been inspired to have similar satirical puppet shows, based on "Spitting Image".
