Being of Russian background myself, I love the Russian traditional painting style called 'Khokhloma'.The folk art on this spindle was inspired by Khokhloma. This remarkable Russian decorative craft dates back to the 17th century and gets its name from the Volga trade settlement village of Khokhloma.
Khokhloma is an original Russian folk art, a unique expression of national culture, and this contributes to its growing popularity. Khokhloma gets its bright, happy character from a distinctive matching of scarlet, black and gold.
I painted this spindle using top quality acrylic paints over a maple base that was beautifully handcrafted by Joshua Lynch of TexasJeans. This spindle has been tested and balanced for the best spinning performance. I have coated it with several coats of gloss varnish for that extra shine and durability.

Spindle spinning project: the singles were wound off onto a skein and dip dyed in indigo. THe dye didn't penetrate into the skein fully where the singles kinked up, so the distribution is kind of random. It's coming out really nice. The singles and the plying are being done on my Cascade St. Helens spindle.
A friend of mine inherited it from her grandmother. As you can see, the shaft is not straight, though she says it spins true. The bottom of the shaft still has bark on it, though it has been considerably polished by use.
This sculpture is scheduled to be removed before the end of the summer, so they can have another Walgreens. When we start removing sculptures like this one, beautiful and unique just to give way to big corporations increase their wealth, that's when we should reevaluate our values.
An almost 2 decade old piece of art trashed!
These are the five spindles I created based on photos provided by users in the Spindlers group on Ravelry.
The clients have lived in their property for a few years with their cats Gilbert and George. Well travelled and culturally diverse, they love the feel of the Majorelle and Frida Kahlo gardens. A keen home brewer, the clients wish to have the opportunity to craft beers in the garden, as well as having space to grow vegetables and enjoy the sunshine.
The theme of the design is based on the distinctive garden of Frida Kahlo, with a strong colour palette of cobalt blue and zingy yellow. A series of rendered raised beds are positioned throughout the garden, increasing in height towards the rear of the space. A flush level planting bed towards the front of the garden accommodates a red painted timber screen with apertures to house blue glass bottles, terracotta pots and other found objects. A similar screen fills the bed opposite. This screen forms a backdrop for a series of terracotta pots filled with specimen plants. The paving will be a terracotta coloured sandstone laid in stretcher pattern. The paving doglegs slightly through the space at which point the beds begin to raise in 20cm increments, creating two enclosed areas. The area to the left can be filled with stunning pots and specimen planting, while the right hand side accommodates a deep armchair constructed from untreated reclaimed railway sleepers. Each raised bed will have plinths built into some corners to display terracotta pots.
The final third of the garden is a seating area. Raised beds cuff the edge of the space which is demarcated with a red timber archway repeated in the style of the screens near the house. A railway sleeper bench on legs offers not only a dining experience but also a day bed area for lounging. The back wall will be raised in height and painted a deep cobalt blue and have a salvaged door attached to it painted in a distressed green reminiscent of the doors in Frida Kahlo’s garden space.
The micro brewery will be housed in a bespoke workstation storage unit installed down the side return. This unit will have enough space to house all the brewing equipment, including a small fridge. Bi-fold doors will fold firmly back against the side, with a tool shed included at the end, which will be accessed by a separate door on the side. Once the doors are folded back a table on castors and sink on castors can be pulled out to create a bar! A neon bar sign attached to the house wall will add a playful element to this area.

This is Oliver the cat modeling an artistic neck and tip that a customer asked for.
You can see that the neck is tiered and there are pyrographed (burned) lines in the neck and on the tip.
The spindle is made of Walnut, weighs about 1.2 ounces, and is 11 1/2 inches long.

Here's my latest spindle. The woods are bloodwood (I think), wenge, and zebra wood. The spin is soft--not terribly long or fast, but very pleasant and quite well balanced. Notches are built in.

this was featured briefly at the beginning of wayne's world as they were driving through "aurora." but it's actually located in a parking lot in berwyn, and i remembered seeing it many times as a kid. i wanted to go by there on our last trip to illinois, but my grandpa said he didn't think it was there anymore. however, based on other flickr users' photos, it appears that it is indeed still standing. i hope it's there the next time i make it up to illinois. it has since been demolished.
