Skater portrait

V předvečer konání Speed festivalu se 22. září 2023 v českolipském depu pořádalo noční fotografování. Počasí nepřálo, vytrvalé mrholení chvilkama přecházelo v déšť. To ovšem nevadilo houfu fotografů, pro které zapózovaly stroje - Sergej T 679.1168, Štokr 556.0506, Pětikolák 524.1110 a Šlechtičny 475.179, 475.196.

For who, they would ask themselves, would be fools enough to dare the South China Sea in such a boat; to dare the South China Sea in the season of the winds?

(From: Yondering, by Louis L’Amour, 1980).

On a moonlit night, somewhere in the South China Sea, on green phosphorescent sea, over disturbed kraken of the deep, the speed boat churns the waves, traveling at prodigious velocity. We follow it for a while, like a flock of seagulls, then gently lower ourselves onto the deck, the salty breeze in our hair and the spray on our skins. Half-hidden in the shadows, we take a secret peek through the salt-encrusted windows. As our eyes adjust, we see a dimly lit cabin with a sole red light. Then we spot the crew, sitting silently on hard seats wearing life jackets.

Grim faces. Grim, tense faces. The situation must be extremely serious. Jack with his elephant rifle. Orinoco Suzy with the blow pipe. The Giancella sisters with their machetes and knitting needles. 20 grips, 5 art directors, 2 script writers, a dozen makeup artists, 1 celebrity photographer and certified madman. One-eyed Captain Sanchez at the wheel, bottle in hand, swearing in Cantonese.

Then, like on command, all eyes turn towards us. We have been spotted!

We disperse into the night, in panic. Man, these are scary dudes!

--

Will we find the Lady in Red? Will she be rescued? Or is it too late? The tension mounts. All eyes turn towards the scriptwriters.

Been planning to do this one for many months, could never build up the gumption to do it.

More work than my usual shot.

Tried making black PlayDoh using white and some old inkjet ink, ended up more gray.

A few weeks ago I picked up a great assortment of PlayDoh, many colors including black. So I molded and cut and pasted the thing up last week.

Got the courage to shoot it tonight. And mind you, the flash has been misbehaving.

But it got the shot, my solution for the classic Rubics Cube.

My camera for the stereo shot arrived Wednesday. A used G6. I messed around with it and got a nice shot of a Christmas bulb filled with jello. Focusing is a pain, but at first blush, the depth of field is greater than my D90.

The G6 was 135$ shipped, so a cheap camera will do a good job with this type of photo. It's all in the flash, folks.

I am extremely proud and excited to present my latest model for you guys today. I'm just so happy with how the 246 GT turned out! It's shorter in overall height than a minifig, but still seats a driver.

One of my personal favorite details about the original car is the "wraparound" rear windscreen, which curves seamlessly into the C pillars, which I did my best to emulate on this model. I also had a last minute idea on how to suggest the yellow Dino logo on the wheels by using these old yellow wheel holders + the Cars wheel hubs that have a hole straight through the center! A yellow bar gives a similar effect to the steering wheel.

Hope y'all enjoy! This one will probably make its way over to my Rebrickable shortly. I haven't been updating RB as much since my techniques have gotten pretty wacky and I feel less confident in suggesting people emulate them, but this is actually a really stable and playable model.
