This one is probably my favourite, because of the iconic red Hong Kong taxi going past. Growing up, they were diesel powered cars, but because of pollution issues in the former British colony, all cabs in Hong Kong now are LPG - they're silent now.
It was a 2 lane road going right to left, and this taxi was in the near lane, and was going to make a turn at the light, so it was slowing down.
Behind it, the bus was past the light and continuing full speed, and the stuttering effect with the light trail is the 10 fps refresh rate of the orange display board showing which route the bus runs.

Elvis on Des Voeux Road Central as 7 ton buses pass on either side, with the long exposure creating the electric blasts of light.
The only drawback? 7 tons either side on a long exposure means it's impossible to get the microphone ultra pin-sharp, but the over-all effect of motion against a steady subject draws the eye in.
Gotta figure out a way to stabilize this better so I can get the Shure logo super sharp next time!

Carl Loewe: „Jan Hus“, Oratorium, 1841
Collage: Stella-Fee Basrawi, Maximilian König, Lisa Krull, Anne Schreiber

Here's Elvis sitting on an internally lit traffic bollard on Des Voeux Road Central in Hong Kong. When the 50mm Summilux-M is wide open & bokeh balls are perfect circles, it's hard to make out the background. So I stopped down a little, hence the polygonal edges to the bokeh of lights.
It's not obvious what this is, but if you live in Hong Kong, you'd know it's an iconic street tram approaching on the left (see the tracks embedded into the road surface?) The big white ball of light is the headlamp.
I would have loved to have a longer exposure to get light trails but buses and trams are so heavy that they'd shake the road and I'd lose the pin-sharp focus. FYI, I had a small LED light shining on the front of the mic to help pop, and in Lightroom, I dialed down the vibrancy & saturation for a more life-like look.
Standing in the courtyard of the beautiful Thian Hock Keng Temple in Singapore's Chinatown, you can see the intricate tiling on the floor that identifies the different areas around the altars and the prayer hall. Even in the middle of a busy weekday afternoon, devotees can find solace here.
It is the oldest Hokkien temple in the country, and the main temple, where this image was shot, is dedicated to the Taoist goddess of the sea and protector of all seamen, Mazu, significant for Singapore's origins as a port with many traders using the island as a gateway to other points in South Asia. It was gazetted by the Singapore government as a national monument in July 1973.
It was an overcast mid-afternoon Friday with light rain falling when this shot was taken, but the wide-open courtyards allowed plenty of light on to the tiled flooring. The microphone was gently placed on the wooden threshold at the front entrance of the temple, with the camera about 30cm off the ground and level with the top of the microphone.

There's a lot of collages online based around Hong Kong's iconic MTR subway names on the station walls. The best are on tiled walls, tiny square tiles that are a mainstay in bathrooms and kitchens in the city. It's mainly seen at stations from the original lines when it opened in the 80s; newer lines silkscreen the name on bland metal wall covers.
I was in Hong Kong for 2 days and planned to get dramatic outdoor shots with Elvis, shots that still eluded me after so many trips. Shots like sunrise from the Peak, which means leaving the hotel at 5:30am...
The weather didn't co-operate. I landed in heavy smog / haze, and the sun never shone through once. Plan B was this: rain or shine, the subway runs so I spent a few hours criss-crossing Hong Kong, and getting some help in Photoshop to generate this lovely collage.
It was sorching hot on Pandawa Beach, an incredible stretch of sand that is only now starting to draw a crowd. The beach has a noticeable gradient, so I had to get down on the sand to shoot as the microphone, which was a few feet away and lower down. This angle framed the background nicely. It was incredibly bright, so I stopped the lens right the way down. A few minutes later, I shot just the ocean flic.kr/p/txy3Hk
The layers of color from the blue sky to the azure water, from the foamy surf to the crystalline sand... it's just amazing to be on the beach and having the composition and colors work so easily for me.
I've put a subtle watermark to deter cheeky monkeys from misappropriating this image, but unlike before, I'll never let this be anything other than "All Rights Reserved", and if you really, really like this image and would like to use it without the watermark, drop me a line and we'll figure out something fair and reasonable.

Shure 55SH Elvis 1994 Reissue; This is the first picture of Elvis that I was genuinely happy with, the bokeh behind from my ProTools rig and using off-shoe lighting.
This was also the last picture I ever shot with a DSLR. Why?
Photography can be a money pit, and even though I would later go lens-crazy with m4/3, I finally settled down with an RX1 and a Leica T with a 50mm Summilux-M permanently attached.
I had a whirlwind visit to Hong Kong, with less than 48 hours on the ground.
Figuring out an interesting series of images with Elvis was going to be tough.
I've always loved light trails, but the last time I did it, from the middle of the road with traffic passing either side, shook things so much that my long exposure shots had too much blur on the microphone, which was actually shaking from the passing traffic!

It's the most photographed waterfront in the world, surpassing even NYC: it's breathtaking yet so simple - a small stretch of the north of Hong Kong Island where the financial district is made up for crazy impressive skyscrapers, with the now dominant IFC 2 reaching far higher than everything else.
I came here at 11pm, on a bit of a whim, as I'd missed the sunset, but the buildings don't light up so early, so it's a happy compromise. You can see boats passing on this 30s exposure creating delightful light streaks. It's the first time I've used the RX1 at ISO 50, which really adds nicely to the IQ.
I forgot to bring an LED light to illuminate the microphone, but thankfully there was a HUGE backlit billboard which provided more than enough light. This is what I grew up seeing everyday, but coming back for a short visit, it's still so special.
This is the Singapore Merlion. It's a fictional creation from the Singapore Tourism Board, part merman, part lion, a blend of the origins of its name from the Malay word "Singapura" (Lion City) and the fortunes built through its port trading activities. So... lion.. port... oceans... fish... mermaid... merman... Boom! Merlion!
It's the must-see for all visitors to Singapore, but from what I've heard, Japanese tourists seeing it for the first time are a little taken aback by it's size. Specifically, it's lack of size. It's slightly over 8m, so when you're from the land where local legend Godzilla is as big as a skyscraper, the Merlion can be a bit of a letdown.
Don't worry: on Sentosa Island, connected to the main island by a bridge, you'll find a much, much larger Merlion. This one is 37m tall, you can walk up the internal stairs to the head and look out the Mouth Viewing Deck, and at night, it has lasers shooting out of its eyes. Yeah, you read that right - frickin' lasers, people!
Here, Elvis has been mounted on a GorillaPod that has been wrapped on to the guard rail around a pedestrian island in the middle of Nathan Road, Hong Kong, with the RX1 on its own stand on the rail, but that was just hand-stabilized.
The Hong Kong Government has cracked down on oversized neon signs that hang over any street from a building - a potential hazard if they fall, because these are big-ass signs. The signs been a staple of Nathan Road since before I can remember (youtube old Hong Kong videos and you'll see 'em everywhere), but slowly all of them have to come down.
I loved the way the streets used to look with clusters of lights, and by March 2013, it was difficult to find a background with enough lights to make things interesting for this shot. This junction is where the Jordan MTR is based, and a few blocks from the Temple Street night market, with the Yue Hwa Emporium (yep, that's the actual name) to the left of Elvis..
Everyone has a different journey to photography, and mine is rather practical: professionally, I handle a lot of voice over work and when I put up my website www.voiceovers.asia covering Asian language voice over talents I work with, I opted for a home page image featuring my Shure SH55 - for sheer rock ’n’ roll street cred, nothing comes close.
On the site image, I add text - location & tag line “Asia. Hear. Here.” I’ve carried this microphone to a load of Asian countries, shot nice pictures, uploaded full size to flickr and set as creative commons - no derivative, no commercial, etc.… which was stupid. A good microphone shot with no watermark gets used without credit waaay more than it should...
I like sharing my images, so everything is “All Rights Reserved” and I’ve added a subtle watermark. While it can easily be removed, from my experience, photo stealers are a lazy lot, so I’ll get screenshot evidence with the watermark there and follow up with an invoice for usage. Finally, I might actually make a few bucks out of this photography racket…
Des Voeux Road Central in Hong Kong passes through the heart of the SAR's financial system, and even on a Saturday night, there's still lots of traffic to be seen as late as 10pm
"Never stop learning" is good life advice, and after shooting a nice image of my Elvis mic (Shure 55SH) with the Singapore CBD Skyline as a backdrop today, I remembered how unhappy I was with the same thing I did from The Peak in Hong Kong.
The skyline is the most photographed in the world, but golden hour is hit or miss. You need a bunch of things to happen in the afternoon (heavy rain to clear the smog for a few hours, for example) and the clouds need to be the right density to make for a colorful dusk.
When I went up to the Peak in October 2014, the sky was bland, and even though I told a load of shots, none were stand-out. This one was the closest, and so I tried again to post-process the image to improve it. I think it looks better this time around, but I'm still eager to get up to the Peak when I'm in Hong Kong and get a gorgeous sky at sunset.

Another image for my voiceovers website http:www.voiceovers.asia, from Singapore. This is from the boardwalk outside Esplanade looking onto Marina Bay with the Shure 55SH secured to a railing. I started taking long exposure shots from 6:30pm until 7:30pm.
The Sony DSC-RX1 was in aperture mode, f/22 and ISO 50, so the variable was the exposure. As dusk fell, the duration slowly crept up, from 1/40 at 6:30pm to 30s at 7:30pm.
I didn't have any ambient light to help illuminate Elvis (I normally have a Manfrotto LED light for this, but this shoot was last minute) so I use my smartphone LED light on the microphone while the shutter was open. This is easily one of my favorite Elvis + Asian Location shots and I'm really happy that it turned out so well for a hometown capture.

Elvis was never a beach boy, his style was pure rock and roll swagger in tight leather pants. Nothing really wrong with brightly colored floral shirts, but Ungasan is the southern tip of Bali Island, not Jupiter South Florida, and surf music is definitely not on the playlist.
The SH55 was perched on this rock and then I stepped back to figure out how to frame this up: having the rock formations in the background helps to establish depth in the shot, and I like that Elvis and the rock he's on are sharp, and everything else is blurred off as the eye looks further and further from the plane of focus.
I couldn't wait until sunset to shoot this as the golf buggy service back up to the resort stops at 6pm, so this was snapped too early: once back at the resort, I snapped some shots of the dusk sky and the purples and reds that streaked across the sky was amazing.
"Since the announcement of the new studio album A Productive Cough (available March 2 from Merge Records) and the release of narrative-scrambling singles “Number One (In New York)” and “Above The Bodega (Local Business),” even the most loyal fans of the noted rock act Titus Andronicus [hereafter +@] have been scratching their heads, wondering how such audacious choices could be so fearlessly made, year after year, why the most trusted name in “punk” would risk it all by performing such an abrupt about-face, and what further, yet-more-baffling surprises may await around the next corner.
Today, all these questions and more may be answered with the unveiling of A Productive Cough : The Documentary, a sixty-minute film from director Ray Concepcion, which offers the curious observer an unprecedentedly intimate look “behind the scenes” of +@’s new album. The viewer will become a proverbial “fly on the wall” as ever-undaunted singer-songwriter Patrick Stickles, veteran producer Kevin S. McMahon and a sprawling cast of the northeastern seaboard’s most elite musicians navigate the choppy waters of the modern recording process, valiantly laboring to execute +@’s most defiant and challenging vision to date.
Between the laughter and tears, eager listeners will also have their appetites aroused upon their first taste of newly minted +@ classics “Real Talk,” “Crass Tattoo,” “Home Alone,” and “Mass Transit Madness (Goin’ Loco’),” while even the least-interested bystander will be unable to help from gaping in wonder at the bucolic splendor of New York’s Hudson Valley, captured in all of its majesty by Concepcion’s loving lens."

It's been described many times as the most photographed skyline in the world - Hong Kong island can be photographed easily from various vantage points in Tsim Sha Tsui. With the sun setting and rising perpendicularly to the skyline, dawn and dusk are beautiful times to capture the towering glass and steel skyscrapers from across the Victoria Harbor.
I use these images for my company website that handles voice over work (www.voiceovers.asia), which specializes in Asian languages; so the images are this microphone, aka Elvis, in Asian settings.
The previous images had the microphone occupying as much as 40% of the image, but now with the advice of my girlfriend Elena (who is a broadcast designer) I now place the microphone in the shot but more as part of the composition, instead of crowding out everything else. I rotate the images frequently, but I have a feeling I am going to favor this one quite a bit!
It really was a nice and successful spectacle, they are going to repeat it this year/next winter - I had to tune down the colors a bit however, as the candy-color style lighting was a bit too much for my tastes.

Großes weihnachtliches 3D-Lichtspektakel in Hirschhorn
Hirschhorn.
