Designing bicycles can be a passion being a stickler for details and precision engineering.
In this sense, Velogical´s customer Sven Knoblich from Kassel in northern Hessen/Germany may be regarded as a kind of jewellery designer for bicycle enthusiasts. Integrating our Velogical rim-dynamo, the Sport model, into his latest randonneur bicycle project, he didn´t hesitate to make a manufactory interface with the potential to be copied by other fine art frame builders or OEMs. We are pround to present his making-of photo series and we invite you to have a look at his artwork as a painter for bicycle frames (nickname "Knobi" at forum rennrad-news):

Nov 13, 2019 -- Historic abandoned U.S. Army buildings near the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Plum Island Animal Disease Center where African Swine fever research is conducted by lead scientist Dr. Manuel Borca, and Senior Scientist Dr. Douglas Gladue, who are patent holders of four promising platforms for live-attenuated African swine fever vaccines. They are working hard to find solutions to contain ASF and prevent its spread if it ever came to the USA, including understanding disease transmission, determinants of virulence and preventive vaccines. The scientists along with their research leader Dr. Luis Rodriguez, work at the Plum Island animal disease center, near Orient Point, NY, a high-security laboratory located off the coast of Long Island in NY operated by the Department of Homeland Security where high-consequence pathogens, not present in the US are studied. Dr. Borca and Dr. Gladue have studied the ASF virus and discovered several viral genes that are necessary for the virus to cause disease. Using advanced genetic engineering to remove these genes from the virus they have created viruses that when inoculated in animals do not cause disease but instead induce protection. Four of these viruses are excellent vaccine candidates that protect 100% of vaccinated animals with a single vaccine shot. Three of these vaccine candidates have been licensed from ARS to vaccine manufacturers for further development, and a fourth platform is currently undergoing licensing. The hope is that at least one of the vaccine candidates will be fully developed and ready to be used as part of a strategy to prevent and controls this devastating disease.
African swine fever virus (ASFV) is a devastating and deadly animal disease that is currently decimating the world’s population of pigs and threatening food security for billions of people worldwide. As its name indicates African swine fever originated in Africa but has affected other regions of the world over the years, including the Iberic peninsula and several countries in the Caribbean, where after decades of work and millions of animals destroyed, the disease was eradicated. Now the disease has escaped Africa again starting in 2007 with an outbreak in the Republic of Georgia that extended to the Caucasus region, parts of Europe, Russia and more recently to China and several countries in South East Asia. There is no vaccine available for ASF and disease outbreaks are currently controlled by on-farm biosecurity measures, animal quarantine, and slaughter.
The USDA Plum Island Animal Disease Center, work to protect against foreign agricultural diseases that could impact the nation's farm economy and export markets... and your food supply. In Addition to ASFV, Plum Island studies foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) and Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV). Plum Island is located off the northeastern tip of New York's Long Island. USDA activities at Plum Island are carried out by scientists and veterinarians with the department's Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). We're equally proud of our safety record. Not once in our nearly 50 years of operation has an animal pathogen escaped from the island. In 2003 the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) joined us on the island, taking responsibility for the safety and security of the facility. Staff commute to work on one of two contract ferries from NY and CT.

He tells me his name is John. I ask him why the paper bag, and he replies that it is his solution to having an ongoing bad hair day. He tells me he wishes his looked as good as mine. I'm not so sure he wasn't just stringing me along, but hey, everyone's got a story. He's got a good gig going on a TSO night. I sat and listened to him play for an hour or so ... he was pretty damn good ... way better than the dude down at the other corner who couldn't sing or play his way out of a wet or dry paper bag (and had CDs for sale). It was amazing to watch the reactions of passersby. Of course there were those who pretended they didn't see him, those who gawked, those who laughed and thought it was hilarious, those who gawked and reacted like he was some kind of a freak, and those who threw him change while others tossed bills into his guitar case. It got me to thinking we are all pretty much one step away from freakdom. There were moments, I wanted to cry out: "Take a picture, it lasts longer". For some I didn't need to as they stopped and took his picture with their 35 mms, point & shoots, iphones, phones or blackberries. Of course it reminded me as well of the study that was done in the New York subway, when Joshua Bell played there and people ignored him and his music ... had they paused long enough to take notice they wouldhave been delighted by his free subway concert (some of them had shelled out $120+ to see him play in a traditional venue). Anyway, all the power to "John" ... a very creative approach to making some fast cash whether he was having a bad hair day or not ... and to many of those who were so amused and thought him a freak, well let's just say a paper bag over many of their faces would have been more ascetically pleasing to look at.

Some background:
The Fokker D.XXIII was designed as a twin-engined single-seat aircraft. To overcome the problems of asymmetric flight it had a tractor engine at the front and a pusher engine at the rear.
The D.XXIII was a cantilever monoplane with the twin tail units on booms. The pilot had an enclosed cockpit in between the tractor and pusher engines and it had a retractable tricycle landing gear.
The prototype first flew on 30 May 1939 powered by two Walter Sagitta I-SR air cooled vee piston engines. The trial flights identified problems with the cooling of the rear engine and general engine performance.
It was proposed to use Rolls-Royce or Daimler-Benz engines in the production aircraft, but tensions with Germany and Great Britain's own need for the Merlin engine eventually led to the Hispano Suiza 12Y engine.
While not as powerful as the British or German alternatives, the 640 kW (860 hp) of each engine instead of the Walter Sagittas' 400 kW (530 hp) meant a considerable improvement in performance, even though the engine compartments had to be modified considerably.
Concerns were also raised about the pilot clearing the rear propeller if he had to bail out and an ejector seat was studied. As a provisional solution, rails were put on both sides of the forward fuselage for the Fokker test pilot, Gerben Sonderman, to use to bail out in an emergency.
The aircraft was flown with Walter Sagitta I-SR 11 times for a total flight time of less than four hours, then the first machine with Hispano Suiza 12Y engines and a modified rear fuselage paneling was introduced, which cured the chronic rear engine cooling problems.
On the 11th flight in April, the undercarriage of the Walter Sagitta prototype was damaged beyond repair, and in May 1940 serial production of the Hispano Suiza powered Fokker D.XXIII-1 started - just when the German forces invaded the Netherlands.
At this time about twenty airframes were more or less complete, and instead of throwing these aircraft into the country's defence (maybe a dozen was airworthy, and maybe five or six armed) the machines were flown over the Channel into British exile.
There, with the help of other Dutch volunteers, RAF 320-322 (Dutch) Sqaudron were formed, among others with Fokker T.8 torpedo bombers and Avro Ansons from the Dutch Naval Service.
Eleven Fokker D.XXIII-1 became the core of RAF (Dutch) 322 Squadron - orginally a fighter unit, but it became soon clear that the Fokker was, despite its two engines, not a match for German fighters like the Bf 109E. Hence it was decided to relegate the Dutch machines to ground attack and night intruder missions, which were taken up from July 1940 on.
In the field all machines were also outfitted with British equipment, including 0.303 in (7.7 mm) Browning machine guns instead of the original two 7.9mm (0.31in) machine guns, and the pair of heavy 13.2mm (0.52in) machine-guns in the front of the tail booms were replaced by two 30mm Oerlikon cannons, left over from armament experiments with Hawker Hurricanes in 1939. Further modifications for the night intruder role included flame dampers and glare shields
In this guise the Fokkers flew night missions over France, with mild success. These attacks lasted until early 1941, when 322 Squadron was disbanded due to lack of operational aircraft: maintenance of the small D.XXIII fleet proved to be too costly, and lack of spares for the Hispano Suiza 12Y frequently grounded most of the Fokker fleet.
Anyway, on 12 June 1943, No. 322 squadron was re-instated again as a separate squadron within the Royal Air Force, formed with Dutch pilots already flying in the RAF but operating British aircraft like the Supermarine Spitfire. From then 322 Squadron also actively participated in the war and fought along the allied forces until the end of the war.

The kit and its assembly:
The exotic Fokker D.XXIII falls perfectly into the time frame for the late 2015 'Battle of Britain' Group Build at whatifmodelers - but building it OOB as a prototype in Dutch colors (even though this looks interesting) was just too easy. I wanted to spin the idea further, so I decided to implant a more powerful engine.
My choice fell on the Hispano Suiza 12Y, a very common engine at that time, and I found a good donation nose in a KP Avia B.35, because it carries a chin radiator. While the new part's height was fine the intersection to the frest of the Fokker fuselage needed some serious body work.
Since the same engine was to be housed in the rear, too, I lengthened the tail section by 3mm and added bumps for the larger cylinder banks, as well as additional carburtor intakes and flaps for the radiator exhausts. Flame dampers were scartched from IP profiles and sheet.
The propellers are also new and slightly bigger than the OOB parts - the front prop comes from a Matchbox Brester Buffalo, with a Ju 188 spinner, and the rear propeller comes from a Percival Provost.
The only other change is the armament. The Oerlikon cannons were made with hollow steel needles, plus flame dampers made from styrene tube.
Painting and markings:
This took some time to develop. Inspiration for this were Dutch Navy Fokker T.8 torpedo bombers which actually escaped the German invasion and arrived in Great Britain, forming 320 Squadron until the parts ran out. That could also have happened with Fokker D.XXIII fighters - and the rest was an analogue development. The Dutch aircraft in RAF service received quickly standard RAF colors and roundels, but many Dutch machines bore the orange triangle as a sign of their origin.
Night intruder missions were already undertaken in mid 1940, and the paint scheme in this case was inspired by an experimental scheme carried by at least one Douglas DB-7/Havoc Mk. I bomber: standard Dark Green/Dark Earth on the upper sides with Special Night (Black) undersides - but in this case any frontal surface like the leading edges or the aircraft's nose were painted black, too.
History was slightly twisted, though: 322 (Dutch) Squadron was only installed in 1943 as a fighter squadron with Dutch personell; the other Dutch squadrons, 320 and 321, existed earlier, but these were rather naval/reconnaissance units, not fighters, so I deemed a dedicated unit for the D.XXIIIs suitable.
Markings and codes were puzzled together from various sources - it was actually really tricky to find suitable places for the fuselage roundels and the codes! I eventually found very small roundels that more or less fit onto the thin tail booms, and the mid-sea grey code letters (from a PrintScale sheet) found a place on the fuselage. The orange triangles were cut from plain sheet, and 'AS468' actually belongs to one of the few Curtiss Clevelands (SBC) in RAF service.
