The last leaves of autumn were falling Friday from these beautiful flowering-pear trees on the plaza that surrounds the Energy Solutions Arena (home of the Utah Jazz basketball team) in Salt Lake City, Utah USA. Although the back lighting made the building darker, it makes the translucent, yellow-orange of leaves stand out against the dark blue glass. I loved the symmetry of the steps and the trees in this wide angle shot.
Now this I can understand! Seems there's not a day goes by that I wouldn't like to just cover my head and ignore something that happens during the day. I honestly think the world would be better off if for just one week the only news that was shared was GOOD NEWS! We put far too much emphasis on the BAD and that only glorifies what's wrong with the world. It's that minute of fame that some people want that hurts so many.

Florida Everglades.... This area has been scoured clean of invasive plants so native ones can take root. Solution holes are formed as the limestone erodes or dissolves. The combination of rainfall and decaying vegetation often creates a weak acid which can dissolve the limestone.

Transporting "environmentally hazardous liquids"
One of four photos of this truck, originally owned by Gunnar Lund Olieservice (photo here flic.kr/p/23TXJ1t). That company was aquired by Ekokem (formerly known as Kommunekemi) in 2013, which caused a slight change in the truck's livery to reflect the changes (photo here flic.kr/p/22wDMV6 )
The Ekokem name was retired in 2017 and the company is now known as Fortum Waste Solutions.

In 2019, ownership of the truck changed once again, as it was sold to Holst Kloakservice, DK-8660 Skanderborg (image here flic.kr/p/2rtYbBg ), where it remained until finally retired in 2022. Through all the years, it kept the same original license plates, and the actual livery also didn't change, except for the company markings.

Retirement age for trucks: many used trucks are offered for sale on international markets. If sold to a foreign buyer, this will not be listed in the danish motor registry, so a "retired" truck may or may not have been exported. In other words, the "retirement age" only shows the age, at which the truck stopped running on danish license plates.

These days, NS doesn't run any regular road trains in/out of Des Moines, but they DO run two different switch jobs across the city's southeast side, with at least one of them operating every day of the week. On July 7th, a number of factors combined to allow me to photograph "Job 1" for the first time, although I've been through the city countless times.
Here, a classic, ex-SOU high-hood EMD GP38-2 had just finished up at DAR PRO Solutions, and was heading over to Ash Grove Cement near 21st and Maury. Over the past decade plus, so many of these high-hoods that defined NS in their early years have been retired or rebuilt, that it's an absolute treat to catch one working in any situation, let alone one like this where it's solo.

Naturalis - Biodiversity Research Center Leiden NL
The former Naturalis complex, which opened in 1998, was designed by Fons Verheijen. The 2019 finished extension and renovation was designed by Neutelings Riedijk Architects in collaboration with fashion designer Iris van Herpen brings science and public together in new spatial ensemble.
Naturalis is the national research institute for biodiversity dating from 1820 which was founded by King Willem I in Leiden, The Netherlands. The institute with a long and rich history experienced an exponential growth in the last decade which led to an urgent necessity to renovate. The number of visitors increased rapidly to 400.000 per year. The new future proof Naturalis brings the growing collection of 42 million objects together (top five in the world). Its new state of the art facilities accommodate more than two hundred researchers whose studies are at the center of attention, contributing solutions to global issues including climate change, the decline of biodiversity on earth, food supply, and water quality. The Naturalis facilities and the collection enable to contribute solutions at the highest level. At the same time the new museum offers the chance to show the public the wealth and beauty of nature.
The institute’s new design forms a sustainable ensemble of existing buildings and new-build, with each activity housed in a specific form. The central atrium connects the various parts of the institute: the existing offices and depots with the newly built museum and laboratories. The design of the atrium consists of a three-dimensional concrete structure in the form of interlocking molecules as a lace of ovals, triangles, and hexagons. The filtered light that enters through the circular windows as a ‘glass crown’ where scientists, staff, students and families meet, reinforcing the monumentality of the space. Public functions such as the restaurant, the shop and the exhibition hall can be found on the ground floor where passers-by can catch sight of the examinations of the last whales washed ashore. The main staircase leading up to exhibitions resembles a mountain path, becoming narrower at the top with enough space to welcome Trix, the sixty-six million years old T-Rex which has been given pride of place in the Dino Era gallery.
The exterior of exhibition halls with stone blocks in horizontal layers mimics a geological structure. Its travertine variety of stone used has developed natural crystals over the span of eons, creating a beautiful sparkle. The layers of stones are interrupted by friezes of white, concrete elements designed by a famous Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen. Invited by Neutelings Riedijk Architects, she designed a total of 263 panels, inspired by the natural shapes of the collection which seem to be smooth as silk, thanks to a special technique developed for Naturalis. Inside the museum, Dutch designer Tord Boontje, known for his lighting, furniture, and fabrics with exquisite floral and animal motifs, shows almost 100 striking and colorful wall panels. They are visual stories that blend photography and drawing to reveal the wonders of the natural world. The project covers a total of around 38,000 m2 of which 18,000 m2 of renovation and 20,000 m2 of new construction.
