Another opportunity to make cuts?

An earthship is a home that is composed of natural and recycled materials. They are off the grid, utilize solar power, are built somewhat into the ground to help regulate temperature, collect water from rain, and are pretty much self sustaining constructions. This particular earthship also had a greenhouse inside that housed plantlife, turtles, birds, and fish. There were chickens in the backyard, too. It also had 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a waterfall, fireplace, and full kitchen. .There is a collection of these earthships out in that region North-West of Taos, New Mexico. As far as I could see in every direction was desert and mountains (Sangre de Cristo). The community is called the Greater World Earthship Community.

What a wonderful gift from Tesla – the chance to drive the same car that I have had since August, but now with an entirely new motor, inverter and gear box. They just upgraded me to Powertrain 1.5 and firmware 3.1.12

It’s much smoother and has the rail gun torque that I had read so much about. Also, the battery coolant pump now shuts down when parked (an irksome precaution in early models that is no longer needed).

The interesting back story is that a major redesign of the whole drivetrain was enabled by a breakthrough in the semiconductor industry – a new IGBT (power transistor) that just started shipping. Advances in the smallest of components unlocked a design cascade to remove the need for shifting altogether (no transmission) while also improving efficiency (longer range, higher performance, 30% more torque, 14,000 RPM redline).

The Tesla blog has the full story and gearbox photos from the CTO, J.B. Straubel.

The plaque below the tree read:

This 25-foot, stainless steel, solar-powered Wi-Fi CommuniTree represents what is possible when someone has the courage to develop a bold vision and the community works together to bring that vision to life. The concept of this structure was the winning idea from the University of Evansville's first Changemaker Challenge in 2016, which invited young people to share their ideas to make the world a better place. Hannah Jaramillo, along with teammates Cody Smith and Austin Fonseca, were part of the Castle High School team that won the 2016 competition, awarding each of them a full tuition, four-year scholarship to the University of Evansville. With Vectren's financing, Hannah then led a diverse and creative team to make it a reality. It is our hope that this CommuniTree will inspire generations of other changemakers to leave their own legacies.

A sneak peak of my Tesla on the manufacturing line in the U.K. Peeling back the covers, it looks like the doors still need some carbon fiber. =)

SolarCity is connecting the plug to the solar panels today... so the driving will be free.

A short uphill walk near the shelter leads to this view of the surrounding landscape.

The stickers arrived. Woot! Commute lanes are now open, and I pollute less than a motorcycle. No tailpipe, and 100% solar.

I was worried that they might have restricted the commute lane program in California, but that’s just for hybrids.

Our Daily Challenge 24-29 June : Energy Efficient

Although only about half of them work on an one day!

Twilight on the first Monday holiday of 2012; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

It had only been two weeks since New Year's Day, but who am I to argue about a three day weekend?

First time to shoot the Santa Monica pier and ferris wheel since they sold the old one on eBay and installed this solar powered beauty -- and that's been, I don't know, going on three, four years? Who can keep track?

Wow, time flies.

All the elements were there for a dazzling sunset; it just never happened. Fortunately, there was still plenty of color though after the sun went down. Worth getting your feet wet.

It's in my wife's planter on our balcony. It has an LED light in it which is solar powered. At night it comes on and changes colours.

Solar Sailor

Solar Sailor: solar-powered boats

Solar Sailor's unique "Hybrid Power System" (HPS) for marine applications is a world first with patents in USA, Australia, NZ and Turkey and pending in 22 other countries including China, Japan and Europe.

The system uses energy from renewable sources such as the sun and wind and combines these with stored energy from batteries and fossil fuel. The system is controlled by a computer to provide ships with power that is operationally efficient, quiet, and environmentally friendly.

The Solar Sailor technology is now being adapted for a variety of marine applications such as eco-tourism, tourism, urban transport, leisure and cargo ships.

The Solar Sailor technology has been proven in a commercial tourist vessel with operation of the 100-passenger Sydney Solar Sailor since June 2000 by Captain Cook Cruises on Sydney Harbour.

The Solar Sailor Hybrid Power System is superior to conventional marine power in terms of lower operating costs (fuel savings and maintenance); zero water pollution; significant reductions in air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions; and greater passenger comfort through reduced noise, vibration and noxious odour emissions.

The Hybrid Power System is so efficient because:

•Incorporates free solar and wind power abundant on the water.

•No gearboxes

•No auxillary generators

•Always generator at optimum revs/efficiency

Since its launch, the Sydney Solar Sailor and the Solar Sailor® concept have received a number of industry awards for design, environmental attributes and technology. These include:

•2001 Australian Design Award of the Year – Engineering

•2000 International Cargo Handling Co-ordination Association (ICHCA) Awards – Outstanding Proven Initiative in Cargo Handling

•2000 Boating industry Association of Australia (BIA) Marine Awards – Best New Product

•1999 Far Eastern Economic Review/Du Pont Asian Innovation Award – Gold Medal

•1997 Advanced Technology Boat Race Canberra Australia – Major Prize

The Solar Sailor technology has been developed with assistance and support from the Australian Greenhouse Office, a department of the Australian Federal Government; the Australian Technology Showcase, an initiative of the New South Wales State Government; BP Solar; Panasonic Australia; University of Technology Sydney (UTS); CI Technologies Pty Ltd, (Citect); and Elgas.

Nearly 1 acre enormous park like installation by by Karen Cusolito

I got a peek under the PEM module at something normally hidden from view – the custom Tesla motor in my Tesla Motors car. It's also the generator - while braking, it recharges the batteries.

3-phase, 4-pole electric motor

Max net power: 185kW (this will go up when I get motor 2.0)

No shifting required.

Ample daylight on the shortest day of the year provided Vitamin D for those who braved the cold, myself included.

A recently acquired new watch which I treat myself too, managed to get it at nearly half price .

It must be a man thing because I have about five others to chose from..

One of the coolest, weirdest, and futuristic looking camera I've ever seen.

It's a very rare Canon solar powered 35mm film camera from the 90's. This one is brand new.

Based on the very successful Canon Sure Shot M, it shares the same specs: 32mm f/3.5, 3-point intelligent autofocus, auto-exposure with shutter speeds ranging from 2s-1/250s, electronic self timer, multiple flash modes, red-eye reduction, suppressed and slow-synch, autoloading, DX decoding, advancing, and rewinding of film.

See pictures taken with this camera

The energy it tanks is sourced from photovoltaic panels in our small town (Wil St. Gallen in Switzerland). So the electromobile is really a solarmobile, and thus a solar taxi. (Taken February 2018)The town of Wil SG is an energy city (a sustainability labels in Switzerland, Energiestadt, if you can read German, their website is easy to find).

Taken outside Vauxhall station. Solar powered, it has a cool board with figures showing how many tonnes of CO2 it has saved and how much electricity it has generated, since it opened :)

otter-kitty pose Sebastian

You can't tell in the picture, but this rescued kitty is missing a toe.

It had to be removed after being rocked on when he was a tiny kitten at his foster family's house.

When he picked his owner he was just a little ball of fluff with a bandaged foot.

He's still pitifully cute!

Noticed this watch via a forum and liked the watch. Also the concept behind the watch is nice; consciously designed, ethically produced, no battery and powered by light.

They make the watch from recycled material. It doesn't say much about the movement,...

For me just a nice watch with 10atm, which is just a nice grab & go watch. Currently have it on a Barton strap as the original straps,..... just aren't that great.

The camera dates from the late 1970s. Have never seen one in real life. A great idea from a very good "second-tier" builder of cameras. Even with innovations and solid, workman-like construction, Ricoh back in the day just couldn't seem to "outshine" its competitors. Too bad, this looks like a very fine way to reduce the use of all those millions of batteries we used to use just to take photos.

Citizen Nighthawk on a Maratac NATO strap. I love this watch more than I can say, quartz movement or no!

It has a inner rotating E6B slide rule bezel that allows you to calculate all sorts of things on the fly, like fuel consumption, mileage, etc, however I usually end up using it to calculate the tip. It's also solar powered, so in theory it should be a very long time before the battery needs to be replaced. The lume on it also makes it easy to read in low-light conditions and it stays fairly bright for hours on end.

a clock face is the part of an analog clock (or watch) that displays time through the use of a flat dial with reference marks, and a revolving pointer turning around the sun in the solar system and a vertical shaft at the center, called a gnomon, indicating the local time. This clock does not have gears and is completely solar powered. It utilizes gravitational, centrifugal/centripetal forces and angular momentum for its operation. Gnomon is an island...time is money...I have plenty of time...How come I am not rich?
