The 2008 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree came from Hamilton, New Jersey. The '08 Tree was donated by the Varanyak family. Tree Facts from the 2008 Tree Facts Postcard (photo by Bart Barlow): Norway Spruce. 72 feet tall, 40 feet wide. Approximately 82 years old. Weight- approximately 16,000 pounds. 30,000 LED lights. (This was the second year that LED bulbs were used on the Tree). A portion of the electrical energy used to light the Tree came from a new installation of photovoltaic panels installed in 2007 on the roof of 45 Rockefeller Plaza. The Tree was topped with a crystal star designed by Swarovski. The 550 pound star is 9 feet in diameter and 1.5 feet deep. It is decorated with 25,000 crystals, with one million facets. The Tree was lighted on December 3, 2008. The Tree's last day on Rockefeller Plaza was January 9, 2009.

It's quite the metaphor... it either goes nowhere, or it goes everywhere. It depends on how you look at it. In fact... that might be a metaphor for life. =)

Here's a solution to the roach problem -- solar-powered robotic roach killers. Actually, I'm not sure the solar-powered part shown on the toy above would work too well.
A better roach killing option would be an inductively powered killer that can charge up through walls and work in the dark. It probably won't be long before that kind of thing is a reality.
Recently, over 14,000 researchers signed an open letter asking world leaders to ban autonomous killing machines. They have nightmares of swarms of tiny cooperative quad-copters, armed with little 1-gram shaped charges... just big enough to blow off your head.
Thinking about robotics too much can make you paranoid. "Bunches of things cooperating with each other" is where robotic research is focused today ... and where it might get out of hand.

A Glastonbury church as seen from the bottom of the mighty Glastonbury Tor. This image seems very far removed from the summer festival atmosphere this sleepy rural town plays host to every year. Hard to imagine somewhere so serene playing host to 150,000 people and the worlds greatest music festival once a year.

This is a new trash container in front of the 7+Fig shopping center in downtown Los Angeles. It is fully enclosed and has a solar panel on its top. The enclosure is likely to prevent homeless people from digging through the trash.
I have no idea how to use the new camera, and started messing around with the settings. For some reason I thought this would add colour, but I really like how it is washed out.

Seems that the city replaced the rather simple garbage bins (that you could just throw things in as you walked by) with these Solar Powered Trash Compactors. They have a tray you have to open *very* wide (like a FedEx drop-off bin) to deposit anything. Rather inconvenient to use.

This has been our home since January. Except for some short breaks, we've been living out of this car, sleeping in the rooftop tent we constructed ourselves. We left Canada 8 months ago, and traveled south through the USA, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and now Costa Rica. It's an adventure of a lifetime, and I don't even know how to begin capturing it in words...
The RICOH XR-S was the world's first Solar Powered Battery SLR. It came out way back in 1981, about maybe less than a year after I was born. This was brought to me by a fellow teacher who is a collector of old gadgets. The tool box had a lot of Grad and circular filters plus an extra lens, I had a fun time shooting this camera and it's many old / classic accessories.
I used the EF 50mm 1.8 lens for all the shots including this one.
