Considering our historic use of the desert for high-tech, top secret, military purposes, the seemingly unreal images had a rather disturbing appearance. (See adjacent photos)
The solar panel powered a flashing light that highlighted the sign at night. Some versions had a ring of xmas lights around the edge of the sign.
Is this a good thing? Sort of. It certainly increases traffic safety and doesn't add stress to a fragile electric grid. It also supports the idea of safety through increasing technology instead of common sense (slow down so you have enough time to see properly and stop). It doesn't reduce fossil fuel consumption but increases consumption in manufacture of many small units instead of building larger efficient units that might actually feed into the grid.
I guess what I'd like to see is a lowering of speed limits, traffic calming measures, and bigger solar panels that would actually feed into the grid providing distributed electricity generation.
I saw this solar powered sign near Shilin MRT Station. However, it seems to me a complete waste of money. The solar panel would be in the shade for at least half the day. It might seem like a nice green thing, but really it is not practical or economical.
Senator Coons toured the T.S. Smith & Sons, Delaware’s only solar-powered Century Farm and Sussex County's only commercial apple orchard. T.S. Smith & Sons is one of the largest solar-powered farms in Delmarva and the panels were manufactured in Newark at Motech.

Ishtiaque Navid, PhD student, working in the Molecular Bean Epitaxy Lab in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building on the North Campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor on Friday, October 14, 2022. Navid and Pan are members of Professor Zetian Mi’s research group. In the background is first year PhD student Yuyang Pan.
In the lab they are growing Gallium nitride (GaN) based nanostructures by molecular beam epitaxy.
