Sustainable does not only mean supportive for the environment, sometimes it supports an entire population. It is the case of the Mirebalais Hospital in Haiti, a state of the art 320 bed teaching facility powered by solar panels. After the devastating earthquake of January 2010, this ecofriendly jewel has been redesigned and donated by Nicholas Clark Architects. The structure's energy supply will be supplemented by the solar panels on the roof, ensuring that the facility is never without power - especially during the frequent outages. Natural ventilation is used for the cooling as well as to prevent the trasmission of airborne diseases, like tuberculosis, and is encouraged through the design of the integrated garden and courtyards. Lighting will engage with the hot tropical sun, with natural daylighting used to spare energy for hospital equipment.
All of these features maximise the efficiency of the hospital, providing a fundamental service without digging into the area's energy supplies. What is even more amazing is that all of the funds for the hospital have come from direct donations from individuals and firms through Partners In Health.
Construction is expected to be complete in January 2012. Click here to read more.

Live After 5, Aug 15, 2008. Downtown Asheville and solar powered! Peggy Ratusz played yesterday, and she destroyed the place - as usual!
Oh, and their phone number is 828.645.2080. We're not affiliated with them, but we are going to be calling them for an estimate on solar for our house... also their site is www.sundancepower.com/
Inspired by the traditional all-night concerts along India’s Ganges River, Sun to Stars evokes the traditional durbar and bethak-style concerts where performers and audiences interact in an informal setting to create an intimate artistic experience. With a backdrop defined by both natural and urban elements, the performers present work that grapples with the environment, be it through mythological folktales or a particular raga connected to nature.
The Sun to Stars festival is solar-powered by the energy collected by the photovoltaic panels on the Solar 1 roof. The event also features a market place that includes regional South Asian cuisine from local chefs, Indian style seating with floor rugs and cushions, and information about important local South Asian and environmental nonprofit organizations.

LEadership and ADvocacy School for Cooperatives in Renewable Energy and
Transformative Economies or LEADS>CREATE. LEADS>CREATE is a program
designed for young cooperators to build their capacity, ensure that the cooperative
movement remains at the cutting edge of the movement for social development,
and to become champions of renewable energy (RE).
The training objectives for the pilot batch are to provide the participants with
sufficient knowledge, attitude and skills on renewable energy; and possible
strategies for adopting RE to address their cooperatives’ needs while promoting
the shift to low carbon development. At the end of the training, the cooperatives
must develop their business proposals on RE to be presented during the general
assembly of their respective cooperatives.
One part of the training is for the participants to visit and meet different RE developer and facilities that incorporate RE in their businesses.
Solar panels are directed at solar south in the northern hemisphere and solar north in the southern hemisphere (these are slightly different than magnetic compass north-south directions) at an angle dictated by the geographic location and latitude of where they are to be installed. Typically, the angle of the solar array is set within a range of between site-latitude-plus 15 degrees and site-latitude-minus 15 degrees, depending on whether a slight winter or summer bias is desirable in the system. Many solar arrays are placed at an angle equal to the site latitude with no bias for seasonal periods. Text Excerpted from:
I've noted just two of these solar-powered stop signs in my P.E.I. travels. Probably they're not unique to the island, but . . . has anyone out there seen one anywhere else?
