The solar eclipse from my little corner of the world, Clarkston, Wa. The beginning of the eclipse about 9:29 a.m. Three tiny sunspots are just visible. This image was taken using a pair of binoculars to project the eclipse on a card which I then photographed.

The story goes that Bertrand Piccard, the son of Jacque Piccard, was the first person to pilot a balloon around the world without stopping. During this journey, he wondered if he could do the same thing without using any propane.
Solar planes have been made before by NASA (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helios_Prototype), but none of those prototype planes were capable of nonstop flight. NASA's solar planes were actually one of the first customer's of my company, SunPower.
Betrand approached many aerospace companies about building him a solar plane, but was told that they were not possible. He then went to the Swiss equivalent of MIT and commissioned a "feasability study", in which Bertrand met Andre Borshburg, the second founder of Solar Impulse. This plane, HB-SIA, is a test platform to prepare for their next plane, HB-SIB, which will fly around the world.
They have successfully flown 26 hours (starting with a discharged battery), proving that they could fly continuously. Their second plane, already under construction, will have a partial autopilot, larger solar array, and larger cabin. The pilot will take short 20 minute naps and allow the autopilot to control the plane for short periods.

My setup for imaging the sun. A 90mm ETX scope with Thousand Oaks glass filter (well worn)! Camera attached to the back port using various extension rings, and good steady camera tripod for steady images except when there's gales, and press release cable to od away with shutter shake.
This system comprises of 8 x 200W (TSM200-DC01A) monocrystalline panels powering a 1.6kW Samil Power inverter which generates approximately 2,450kWh each year.
