As the spring equinox approaches a solar eclipse crosses the UK co-coinciding with a super-moon darkening the landscape at Stonehenge Wiltshire March 20th 2015. Shot taken 0940
BBC TV film crews are let in early (far right) English heritage make the public wait until after the peak of the eclipse for paid access in favour of uninterrupted maximum visual media publicity. They kindly let you buy refreshments from their canteen first though yet with dozens of staff there cannot open an hour earlier than normal at the start of the eclipse. Another PR own goal and missed opportunity for their "management" of the worlds most famous monument ? The new visitors centre is well worth a visit and staff are friendly. "Were already doing something tomorrow for the equinox " I was politely told. They were true their word and blocked access to their car park and the bi- way for those wishing to see the spring equinox forcing the public to walk a mile and a half at least. Perhaps they will get their act together for the Aug 12th 2026 eclipse and do something special, rather than discouraging paying and non paying visitors (providing that is long enough notice). The good news is that the land rovers will be back from the repair shop soon so you will not have to travel to the stones on the airport runway style buses any more.

The side of one of the buildings at work is covered in solar panels. They gleam in the sun, albeit infrequently, in Scotland.
Edgar Evins State Park
Tennessee
My younger son, 18 year-old Paul, told me early in the year that he wanted to take a road trip to see the eclipse. I was so excited, mostly because he (and his older brother) swore off road trips with Mom years ago. We asked a few family members to join us and on Saturday morning we left coastal Alabama for Nebraska. Well, the weather forecast didn't look good for Nebraska, so we decided to "wing it." After traveling through Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois and Kentucky, we arrived at Tennessee's Edgar Evins State Park on Monday morning. I couldn't have imaged a better place to spend the day waiting for the eclipse - this park and the reservoir are so beautiful. The 2.5 minutes of totality were magical! It was one of the best days ever.
This is a merger of the "Edge of the Sun" photo that I posted earlier today and a photo I took of a real solar eclipse 2014-11-14. Coincidentally a lot of the off-edge prominences line up with the light flooding through valleys of the Moon.
Neat effect.
A solar eclipse electrified all of North America on the afternoon of April 8, 2024, especially for those living under the path of totality. On Manitoulin Island, Ontario, we didn't get a full eclipse but my telescope caught some terrific images.
Close up to the tactile indicators on the ground at the Festival Plaza, with the Solar Mallee Trees in the background.
SOLAR MALLEE TREES
The Solar Mallee Trees on the Adelaide Festival Centre Plaza harness solar energy via a canopy of laminated oval solar cell panels. Each "tree" can produce 864 kW hours but only uses 125kW hours of energy each year, saving around 2 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions - equivalent to the benefit of 6 real trees per year.

I was unprepared and in truth, had no idea how to capture the 91% solar eclipse this morning so messed up my attempts. I was happier with this candid of the strange crescent shaped shadows on the shed wall. Meantime my daughter snapped the eclipse pic below with her trusty point and shoot.

Just happened to notice that the sun was at the right angle to capture it shining through this old street lantern. Taken in aperture priority mode, the resulting fast shutter speed makes it look like it was taken at dusk when it was actually broad daylight.
Solar Eclipse Sequence as seen from Dunnottar Castle, lots of cloud cover but managed this between them, the solar film purchase was worth it after all!

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured this view of a powerful M3.6 Class solar flare on Feb. 24, 2011 during a 90-minute sun storm. NASA scientists called the display a "monster prominence" that kicked up a huge plasma wave.
