Some of the views, building and plants around Independence Mine and Gold Cord Lake Trail in Hatcher Pass, Sept. 7, 2014. At the Lynch Cabin, circa 1930, Roy Lynch used sod layers, stacked between layers of corrugated metal sheets for insulation, Roy Lynch and his family lived in the apartment house at the mine, but must have built this tin, log and sod cabin before moving into the new quarters below, since the apartment house wasn't constructed until 1937. There is a platform bed frame for hikers. The cabin was built with a double wall using corrugated metal and sandwiching layers of sod between the metal walls. The interior is wood plank. It seemed to have wind screens on the windows. An arctic ground squirrel at some point dug a tunnel into the sod wall. The construction of this cabin is sturdier than its Boomtown neighbors' homes, being metal with full log support beams. The ruins of Boomtown are almost all completely collapsed piles of milled wood.
