Old Spiny is telling the kids a scary (true!) story about David Grundman the cactus killer--Spiny never gets tired of telling that one.
(The link is to an article at www.snopes.com.)
The Austin Lounge Lizards have a song called Saguaro (youtu.be/9_9LDLur5P4) that commemorates the greatest man-vs-cactus match ever. (The old link to the song that I had here went bad - sorry about that - but the youTube link ought to be good.)
although the humble banana was, quite literally, odin's first solid food his interest in the fruit has waxed and mostly waned over the months as he seemed interested in eating only protein, blueberries and cheerios ( pretty much in that order of preference ).
but now monkeys are cool and he knows monkeys eat bananas and so thanks to the powers of toddler logic, bananas are back on the menu.
it's amazing to think that by the time odin reaches adulthood some believe that bananas as we know them will no longer exist ( obviously, some disagree ).
well at least there's a bit more time for us to relax on a saturday afternoon and ponder the economics of peeling bananas. i'm a peel-from-the-stem kind of guy, but given his interest in all things simian we should probably teach him how to properly peel a banana just like monkeys ( and many other cultures ) do it.
I began Day 4 of SXSW 2014 with another 9:30am SXSW Interactive session -- If Content Is King, Who Is Sheriff? -- at the Austin Convention Center. The panel was hosted by Gail Marie of McKinney; Kristina Eastham of Digitaria Interactive; Mike Schmidt of National Geographic; and Robert Hernandez of USC Annenberg. I snapped a few shots of some of the slides that intrigued me; this one featured some useful resources like Tweet2Cite, Storyful, and the ever-useful urban-legend-busting site Snopes. (You can view more of the slides -- although not the complete presentation -- at SlideShare.)

When you follow this link you need to go mid page to see an ABC new video of this occasion (cut and paste this address if it does not show as a live link. rawstory.com/news/2007/Obama_doesnt_put_hand_over_heart_1...
I also checked with the hoax busters and urban legends sites and they verified this to be true. www.snopes.com/politics/obama/anthem.asp
There are people who believe the photo was tampered with; however live video from ABC News makes it clear that was not the case. Networks are extremely careful about what they air about any candidate for any office ever since Dan Rather was fired over the story he did on George W Bush, .
Weeks after coming under fire for his refusal to wear an American flag pin, Democratic presidential contender Sen. Barack Obama is again facing questions about his patriotism from some conservative blogs -- this time for apparently failing to put his hand over his heart during a rendition of the national anthem at an Iowa campaign event.
A video of the event in question, obtained by ABC News, shows Obama with his hands firmly clasped in front of him during the song. Meanwhile, rival Democratic candidates Gov. Bill Richardson (D-AZ) and Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) strike a traditional anthem pose beside him, holding their right hands over their hearts.
I am sure Senator Obama is a good man but as a Veteran and a 100% service disabled Veteran at that I have a hard time supporting a candidate that refuses to wear an American Flag lapel pin and worse yet not have an immediate sense of pride to place his hand over his heart when the Pledge of Allegianc is played.
Hillary has always been there for Veterans and that is why I am working to help her win the White House.

Kita hates routine! He prefers to find water than drink from a bowl. He likes new places for his food dish. Here he came in through the kitchen window just as I was giving Taj her food down by the fridge!
And - now that you can browse all the stuff in my tiny kitchen - here is something else to consider about stuff and cooking. CELL PHHONES CAN COOK POPCORN. Really. So what do they do to people's brains? Here's evidence. It's really making me think.

Does anyone know anything about this frog?

Compliment the people you love and care about. We often tend to forget the importance of showing our affections and love and to forget that life will end one day. Sometimes the smallest of things could mean the most to another.

This is the “TEAR DROP” made and installed by the Russians to honor those who died in 9 11 and a statement against terrorism. It is very impressive. The tear drop is lined up with the Statue of Liberty.
www.snopes.com/fact-check/tear-drop-monument/
It is shocking that this "Tear Drop" 9/11 memorial exists right across from NYC and yet we do not hear about it. This is a 100-foot tall monument given to the U.S. back in 2006 by the Russian people in memory of all those that lost their lives on 9/11. The breaking in the cracked facade forms the shape of the two towers. The giant suspended tear drop symbolizes all the tears the world had shed in response to this terrifying day. Absolutely beautiful. It is located in Bayonne, New Jersey, which is just on the other side of the water near the Statue of Liberty. It is a shame that such a beautiful memorial is given barely any attention and I think it should be shown every year around this time. Feel free to share this post to your walls!

of course, we couldn't stand it for more than a few minutes and eventually relented and released him from his jail.
sigh. we tried to convince him that it's not like we were sentencing him to a prolonged stint in a skinner box or that he should be thankful that we're not subjecting him to the accordion style baby traps like we had when we grew up ( how did we ever survive anyways ), but i guess we might have to wait a few months for his higher reasoning faculties to develop.

On July 22, 2025, Republicans on the Appropriations Committee of the House of Representatives passed an amendment that would rename Kennedy Center to First Lady Melania Trump Opera House. The amendment, introduced by Rep. Mike Simpson, a Republican from Idaho, passed as part of the 2026 Interior, Environment and Related Agencies Appropriations bill. The bill and amendment had yet to become law. Snopes. The quote is not attributed to her, but was written on a jacket she wore on a trip to visit children at a migrant center. "My daughter & I had just finished a salad at Neiman-Marcus Cafe in Dallas & decided to have a small dessert. Because our family are such cookie lovers, we decided to try the "Neiman-Marcus Cookie". It was so excellent that I asked if they would give me the recipe and they said with a small frown, "I'm afraid not." Well, I said, would you let me buy the recipe? With a cute smile, she said, "Yes." I asked how much, and she responded, "Two fifty." I said with approval, just add it to my tab.
Thirty days later, I received my VISA statement from Neiman-Marcus and it was $285.00. I looked again and I remembered I had only spent $9.95 for two salads and about $20.00 for a scarf. As I glanced at the bottom of the statement, it said, "Cookie Recipe - $250.00." Boy, was I upset!! I called Neiman's Accounting Dept. and told them the waitress said it was "two fifty," and I did not realize she meant $250.00 for a cookie recipe.
I just said, "Okay, you folks got my $250.00 and now I'm going to have $250.00 worth of fun." I told her that I was going to see to it that every cookie lover will have a $250.00 cookie recipe from Neiman-Marcus for nothing.
So, here it is, and please pass it to someone else or run a few copies....I paid for it; now you can have it for free. (Recipe may be halved):
2 cups butter
4 cups flour
2 tsp. soda
2 cups sugar
5 cups blended oatmeal**
24 oz. chocolate chips
2 cups brown sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 8 oz. Hershey Bar (grated)
4 eggs
2 tsp. baking powder
3 cups chopped nuts (your choice)
2 tsp. vanilla
Cream the butter and both sugars. Add eggs and vanilla; mix together with flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder, and soda. Add chocolate chips, Hershey Bar and nuts. Roll into balls and place two inches apart on a cookie sheet. Bake for 10 minutes at 375 degrees. Makes 112 cookies.
** measure oatmeal and blend in a blender to a fine powder."
*** This is one of my all time favorite Urban Legend emails! I've never even tried the cookie recipe, but what a great meme!***

Green Potatoes
I was starting to cut these up and cook them even though they had turned green. But as the water was heating, I looked up green potatoes. Snopes, Medline, and the New York Times all say green potatoes are poisonous. They have increased levels of solanine, a glycoalkaloid, which the potato develops to deter insects and other predators.
The potatoes had been near a kitchen window and were exposed to afternoon light. That apparently induced them to produce chlorophyll and turn green. The links say potatoes (Solanum tuberosum, part of the nightshade family) produce solanine along with the chlorophyll. Wikipedia says people who ingest solanine develop gastrointestinal and neurological disorders. “Symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, burning of the throat, cardiac dysrhythmia, nightmare, headache and dizziness. In more severe cases, hallucinations, loss of sensation, paralysis, fever, jaundice, dilated pupils, hypothermia and death have been reported.”
every so often we try and find something that odin enjoys more than his dessert staple of frozen blueberries and tonight the challenger was edy's toffee almond ice cream dibs. surely any sane toddler would enjoy ice cream bits covered with chocolate, toffee and almonds over boring ol' frozen fruit.
but not odin. to him, apparently, there is nothing quite as consistently yummy as your humble vaccinium corymbosum ( although some of his relatives might argue that vaccinium_angustifolium is The Bestest Blueberry ).
and yes, i knoooooow that the phrase is technically "just deserts" and actually references an obsolete meaning of the word 'desert', so go prove your etymological prowess elsewhere :-)
