As we drove home from the Canadian Rockies this summer, I looked up and saw fascinating color in the sky. At first it was faint, then increased in strength, then gradually faded away. I got maybe 50 shots of it (LOL) through the front windshield. This is my favorite of them.

Later a friend sent me a photo and identified it as a Fire Rainbow, a term which I'd never heard before. Unfortunately, shooting through the windshield degraded the capture of the fine colors I saw. The photo she sent me was much more dramatic. To see others and learn more see: www.snopes.com/photos/natural/firerainbow.asp and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circumhorizontal_arc

The Bombardier 415 (formerly Canadair CL-415) is a Canadian amphibious aircraft purpose-built as a water bomber. It is the only aircraft designed and built specifically for aerial firefighting and is based on the company's CL-215.

This aircraft (278) is one of nine 415's operated by Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources. The 415 can scoop up to 6,140 litres (1350 Imperial gal or 1,620 US gal) of water from a nearby water source, mix it with a chemical foam if desired, and drop it on a fire without having to return to base to refill its tanks.

Because water loads are scooped through two probes that measure only 4 x 6 inches, it cannot, as often rumoured, scoop up an unsuspecting swimmer or scuba diver and dump it on a fire.

The uptight 1950s and 1960s were decades of social and cultural changes in the United States, especially in the areas of sexuality and gender roles. However, these changes were often met with resistance and conservatism, especially in the advertising industry, which was dominated by white, male executives. Therefore, many advertisers used subtle or not-so-subtle ways to disguise sexual content in their ads. For example, the use of double entendres or innuendos that implied sexual meanings or activities, but could also be interpreted as innocent or humorous. The most glaring example of this is a 7-Up ad from September 1963 featuring a woman bending over to pick up a bottle of 7-Up, with the caption “It’s amazing what you can do with just two fingers and a thumb!” That ad recently went viral.

UPDATE: Just checked with Snopes.com, and they claim that the 7-Up ad I mention above is FAKE. The graphic portion of the ad is REAL but the caption is NOT. The original caption read "Need alley-oop? It's yours with this quick, fresh lift!"

In any case, the "Pick a Pair" Budweiser ad comes from my copy of "The Saturday Evening Post," so I know it isn't a fake.

Bolus & Snopes Civic nicknamed "Tokyo Joe"

"Worlds Fastest Civic" in 1976 @ Talladega Motor speedway 146.698 Mph

Details on this quote from Snopes:

The quote is accurate as reported and reads in full:

"Unless we do something about this, my children are going to grow up in a jungle, the jungle being a racial jungle with tensions having built so high that it is going to explode at some point. We have got to make some move on this."

Joe Biden made the remark in 1977 during a hearing about busing school children in order to desegregate public schools. As The New York Times reported in a detailed delineation of Biden’s history with busing, Biden at the time had emerged as the Democratic party’s crusader against busing, taking the same side as segregationists.

As I've written about before, I don't believe people (comedians, politicians, celebrities, etc.) should be held accountable for things they've said in decades prior. My views and morals have changed significantly since I became a Christian only five years ago. Politicians certainly have the ability to change. Plus, they're heavily influenced by money, advisors, and activists. To be clear, I have no opinion on Joe Biden; I just want my viewers to be aware of how it's possible to change and how many people have a bias.

Seen at the Black Lives Matter protest at Payrow Plaza in Bethlehem, PA, on June 4th, 2020. (facebook.com/LVStandsUp/photos/a.131399981664923/17623686...)

It was the first organised protest I had been to and it was a much bigger crowd than I was expecting. There wa very little protection from the sun and it was 30.5ºC (87ºF).

I was standing at the back of the crowd so I had the ability to move around with all my camera gear. Hence, it was difficult to hear what each speaker was saying because there were only some small speakers setup at the front of the speaking platform. This is something future protests should be mindful of; if you have a message to share, make sure it can be heard (through the A/V system). From what I could hear, the messages were similar to what has been expressed on social media. Something I had not heard said prior to this protest was: If you have privilege, use it. I think many of us do have privileges and I will do my best to use mine to lift those in oppression. Photography and video are one way I know how to do that.

Most people were wearing masks due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In general, that makes me frustrated because I don't recognise anybody and not seeing someone's mouth (or someone seeing mine) inhibits the emotion they're expressing. I can be smiling ear-to-ear with sunglasses on and the person I'm looking at has a seemingly stern and dismissive appearance on their face. I can't wait for the masks to be done with.

I received this story from Barbaroo in Colorado. Barbaroo graduated with me in 1944 from Corpus Christi High School and we still exchange an Email from time to time. Is THAT a miracle or what?

So much magic has been in my life lately, I just had to share this story. For additiona photographs of Faith, I'll post the link to Snopes:

www.snopes.com/photos/animals/faithdog.asp

This dog was born on Christmas Eve in the year 2002. He was born with 3 legs - 2 healthy hind legs and 1 abnormal front leg which needed to be amputated. He of course could not walk when he was born. Even his mother did not want him.

His first owner also did not think that he could survive. Therefore, he

was thinking of 'putting him to sleep'. By this time, his present owner, Jude Stringfellow, met him and wanted to

take care of him.

She was determined to teach and train this dog to walk by himself.

Therefore she named him 'Faith'.

In the beginning, she put Faith on a surfing board to let him feel the

movements.

Later she used peanut butter on a spoon as a lure and reward for him to

stand up and jump around.

Even the other dog at home also helped to encourage him to walk.

Amazingly, only after 6 months, like a miracle, Faith learned to balance

on his 2 hind legs and jumped to move forward.

After further training in the snow, he now can walk like a human being.

Faith loves to walk around now. No matter where he goes, he just attracts

all the people around him.

He is now becoming famous on the international scene. He has appeared on

various newspapers and TV shows.

There is even one book entitled 'With a little faith' being published

about him. He was even considered to appear in one of Harry Potter

movies.

His present owner Jude Stringfellow has given up her teaching post and

plans to take him around the world to preach that even without a perfect

body, one can have a perfect soul'.

In life there are always undesirable things. Perhaps one will feel better

if one changes the point of view from another direction.

I hope this message will bring fresh new ways of thinking to everyone and

that everyone can appreciate and be thankful for each beautiful day that

follows.

Franz is my cousin, the youngest child of my mother's oldest brother Neil (who passed away a couple of years ago). Neil was a very handsome, charismatic, and talented man with substance abuse problems and severe mental illness. He was in San Francisco during the Summer of Love and I think Franz was the progeny of those heady days --

www.flickr.com/photos/mississippi_snopes/527154974/

Neil drifted back to the French Quarter, where I remember visiting Neil with my parents in maybe 1969-1970 in a commune in an abandoned building with pirated electricity and a jukebox heavy on Jimi Hendrix.

Mama and Daddy took Franz into their home during my freshman year in college (after a court ruled that Neil no longer had the mental capacity to look after six year old Franz, who was running loose in the French Quarter). Franz had a loving home in a small Mississippi town, graduated from high school, and headed off to junior college -- where he met and married Kerri, with whom he had a son Michael.

One early morning in 1991 (I think) Franz was headed to his job as an assistant manager at a Sunflower grocery store when he ran a red light on his motorcycle. His helmet wasn't much help when he went flying 60 feet and landed on his head.

Kerri was amazingly devoted during Franz's crisis period, even taking him home to live with her and their son Michael. But the degree of brain damage was just too great -- Franz hasn't spoken a word since the accident and it's not at all clear that he recognizes any of us.

But Mama's and Daddy's visits to the nursing homes where he's resided for two decades now are clearly a total delight for Franz. Here, he's dipping into the cheese puffs that Mama bought him at Fred's Dollar Store.

I hope I'm capable of showing the undying love that Mama and Daddy have shown Franz during his endless years of extreme need. And I hope that that hope will never be put to the test.

Medium: Black and white photographic print

Dimensions: 4.25 in x 3 in

Culture: American

Collection: Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes Trial Photographs - During 1925, Watson Davis (1896-1967), Science Service managing editor, took numerous photographs while covering the State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes trial as a reporter. In what was dubbed "The Trial of the Century," Scopes was tried and convicted for violating a state law prohibiting the teaching of the theory of evolution. William Jennings Bryan served on the prosecution team, and Clarence Darrow defended Scopes. Almost eighty years later, the nitrate negatives, including portraits of trial participants, and images from the trial itself and significant places in Dayton, were discovered in archival material donated to the Smithsonian by Science Service in 1971. Marcel C. LaFollette, an independent scholar, historian and Smithsonian volunteer uncovered these rare, previously unpublished photographs of the 1925 Tennessee vs. John Scopes "Monkey Trial" in the Smithsonian Institution Archives (SIA). In 2005, SIA restored fifty-two of the negatives with funds granted by the Smithsonian Women's Committee. Included here are thirty-nine of the images. All images belong to the Record Unit 7091: Science Service, Records, 1902-1965 collection of SIA. All photographs were taken by Watson Davis, Managing Editor of Science Service, while he was in Dayton, Tennessee, June 4-5, 1925, and July 10-22, 1925. LaFollette identified and dated each of these images, and has published a new book highlighting these and other images from the trial entitled, Reframing Scopes: Journalists, Scientists, and Lost Photographs from the Trial of the Century, University Press of Kansas, 2008.

On Saturday, May 5, Toni and I will have been married for 39 years. Unlike most current marriages, this was a date with real world changes. Things that mattered weren't the same, not just government paper work. A white dress, made by her mother .... a splurge on Holiday Inn fried oysters for the first married dinner ... and a double knot that takes more than 39 years to figure out and enjoy.

Thanks, Maedeans. Approaching 39 of these, I had no idea about what to do for an anniversary gift. This is big enough:

I expect that this will be our last anniversary that doesn't evoke simpering "oh isn't that so so cute" sentiments, to the outside world. To which I say MYOFB and just --

Here's a TNR semi-happy ending: We trapped Horace in May 2010 and had him fixed on an ASPCA mobile spay clinic truck. They called me while he was still under sedation to tell me a) they had accidentally given him an FIV test I had not requested, b) that he was FIV+, and c) did I want them to 'wake him up?'

Obviously I did have them wake him up. It's been almost 2 years and he's been doing fine ever since. Now that he's fixed, he is so gentle it's highly unlikely he will ever be in a situation to transfer the FIV. I am bothered that he still lives across the street, but every night he shepherds several cats across the street to our feeding station (you can see his protoge Maggie in the bg).

I can never get good photos of these guys and their crew (including Mongo, Vig, Snopes and Sark) cuz they ony come at night. I am increasingly concerned about the street-crossing they endure, and am trying to find a way to relocate them to the back yard. In any case, the FIV isn't slowing Horace down, he's doing great and I hope he stays with us a long time.

Ken Olsen (1926 - ), President, Digital Equipment, 1977

Ken Olsen was the co-founder and CEO of Digital (also known as Digital Equipment Corporation, or DEC), a company launched out of an old wool mill in Massachusetts in 1957, which at its peak the late 1980s was the number two computer company in the United States with sales revenues of $14 billion. Digital faltered in the 1990s, however; in 1992 Olsen was replaced as CEO, and in 1998 the company was sold to Compaq (which in turn was bought up by Hewlett-Packard in 2002). Part of the reason for Digital's downfall is often blamed on Olsen's failure to anticipate or understand the burgeoning personal computer market, a failure supposedly exemplified by his having disparaged the PC as something no individual needed to have in his home. (snopes.com)

Snopes has been doing very well with his assimilation, coming to the front of his cage to see the other cats and generally being pretty casual about things. BT Dubs, however, has been more withdrawn, rarely coming out of his shelter. These two were friends on the outside so I thought it might help them to have them shack up.

The cage is big enough for the two of them, esp considering they spend most of their time just lying around. Despite how it looks in the photo it seems to be working well, BT has been out and about more and they seem very at ease with each other. In fact, when I came to check on them last night they both got into the same shelter!

It's been a week since we started this experiment, so they need another week or so before I'd feel confident releasing them. So far it seems like it's going well so I'm optimistic they will stick around. And now that the other cage is open, I can try again for Mongo!

The Hotel el Convento in Leon, Nicaragua has a little nook whose walls are covered with about 20 oil paintings of pop icons. This is the last of the photos I took of these catchy works. The others can be found at the following links:

Salamanca is a city in northwestern Spain, the capital of the Province of Salamanca in the community of Castile and León. Its Old City was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988

Built between 1513 and 1733, the Gothic cathedral underwent restoration work in 1992. It is a generally a tradition of cathedral builders and restorers to add details or new carvings to the facade as a sort of signature. In this case after conferring with the cathedral, quarry man Jeronimo Garcia was given the go-ahead to add some more modern images to the facade including an astronaut floating among some vines. Among the other recently added images are a dragon eating ice cream, a lynx, a bull, and a crayfish.

Despite there being clear documentation of the astronaut being a recent addition, the astronaut has already fueled ideas of ancient space travel, and alien interventions in easily influenced minds.

I went out this afternoon for a cuppa followed by this Pepsi Max before moving on to Swansea Winterland. I was sat here putting my camera settings right for long exposures once it got dark, when I had this idea of placing the camera on the table and just shooting. On reflection I think a wider aperture to give a shallow DoF would have been good but I was more intent on moving on after this.

Re the aspartame content in sugar free drinks: over the years I (and many others) have been subjected to scaremongering messages on a web discussion forum that aspartame is neuro-toxic causing brain damage but research shows that you'd have to drink 30 gallons of this a day before the body breaks it down to toxic levels of Methanol . A no brainer - pun fully intended ;-)

although the humble banana was, quite literally, odin's first solid food his interest in the fruit has waxed and mostly waned over the months as he seemed interested in eating only protein, blueberries and cheerios ( pretty much in that order of preference ).

but now monkeys are cool and he knows monkeys eat bananas and so thanks to the powers of toddler logic, bananas are back on the menu.

it's amazing to think that by the time odin reaches adulthood some believe that bananas as we know them will no longer exist ( obviously, some disagree ).

well at least there's a bit more time for us to relax on a saturday afternoon and ponder the economics of peeling bananas. i'm a peel-from-the-stem kind of guy, but given his interest in all things simian we should probably teach him how to properly peel a banana just like monkeys ( and many other cultures ) do it.

I began Day 4 of SXSW 2014 with another 9:30am SXSW Interactive session -- If Content Is King, Who Is Sheriff? -- at the Austin Convention Center. The panel was hosted by Gail Marie of McKinney; Kristina Eastham of Digitaria Interactive; Mike Schmidt of National Geographic; and Robert Hernandez of USC Annenberg. I snapped a few shots of some of the slides that intrigued me; this one featured some useful resources like Tweet2Cite, Storyful, and the ever-useful urban-legend-busting site Snopes. When you follow this link you need to go mid page to see an ABC new video of this occasion (cut and paste this address if it does not show as a live link. rawstory.com/news/2007/Obama_doesnt_put_hand_over_heart_1...

I also checked with the hoax busters and urban legends sites and they verified this to be true. www.snopes.com/politics/obama/anthem.asp

There are people who believe the photo was tampered with; however live video from ABC News makes it clear that was not the case. Networks are extremely careful about what they air about any candidate for any office ever since Dan Rather was fired over the story he did on George W Bush, .

Weeks after coming under fire for his refusal to wear an American flag pin, Democratic presidential contender Sen. Barack Obama is again facing questions about his patriotism from some conservative blogs -- this time for apparently failing to put his hand over his heart during a rendition of the national anthem at an Iowa campaign event.

A video of the event in question, obtained by ABC News, shows Obama with his hands firmly clasped in front of him during the song. Meanwhile, rival Democratic candidates Gov. Bill Richardson (D-AZ) and Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) strike a traditional anthem pose beside him, holding their right hands over their hearts.

I am sure Senator Obama is a good man but as a Veteran and a 100% service disabled Veteran at that I have a hard time supporting a candidate that refuses to wear an American Flag lapel pin and worse yet not have an immediate sense of pride to place his hand over his heart when the Pledge of Allegianc is played.

Hillary has always been there for Veterans and that is why I am working to help her win the White House.
