What does one do while stuck at home due to heavy snow? Hmm. Well, feed the birds obviously, and then spend almost an entire day photographing and filming them. I get so caught up in watching their interactions and behaviours, from the robin bobbing its tail and calling loudly before chasing off competition, to the shy blink-and-you'll-miss-them visits of the Blue tits and chaffinches. Here, a male chaffinch tucks in to some peanuts.

An adult male Hairy Woodpecker snacks at our feeder. The hairy woodpecker was described and illustrated with a hand-colored plate by the English naturalist Mark Catesby in his The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands which was published between 1729 and 1732. hese birds forage on trees, often turning over bark or excavating to uncover insects. They mainly eat insects, but also fruits, berries and nuts, as well as sometimes tree sap. Springfield, Va. 14 February 2021
