Market Town : Simon : Living with Epilepsy : Plans & sufferance

"I can't remember anything when the fit comes on. I can only remember a little about the afterwards. Like, if I get damaged and have a headache they are what tell me I've had a seizure."

When we began this project we had talked about what we should do should the event of a seizure ever take place whilst shooting. Together we concluded that to make a story about life, living and dealing with epilepsy we would not be reflecting the truth were it not to encompass seizures and the reality of their effects upon Simon.

However, due to his new medication dosage and the past weeks being seizure free neither of us expected one to take place so suddenly, so dramatically on this day of shooting. The above two frames are just a split second apart. Simon was upon the treadmill and just beginning his 15 minute walk. The time it took for the shutter to raise and fall he was down and down hard. Within the blink of an eye Simon was taken from enjoying his walk, enjoying the activity, enjoying his day. There were no signs nor signal of any impending seizure nor initially any sign of injury.

There are numerous types of epileptic seizure. Simon most commonly suffers from a Generalised seizure, in Simon's case specifically Atonic seizures. (Also known as drop attacks or akinetic seizures.)

Generalised seizures involve epileptic activity in both hemispheres (halves) of the brain. During an Atonic seizure your body usually falls forward and the dangers of banging your head on furniture or other hard objects are greatly heightened as a result.

A movie theatre in a small town in southeastern Saskatchewan. Alas, i can't remember which town it was that I took this.

just one afternoon in summer days.

Compared with historic times, there is less traffic on the River Thames nowadays. Tourist boats are the most common vessels to be encountered, and several times each day, tugs ply back and forth with a string of barges carrying containerised garbage. This small craft provided a contrast as it headed upstream. I wonder what purpose it was fulfilling?

IORY's route from Toledo to Cincinnati cuts through quite a few of these.

All the cars, except one, are built using part no. 2441, so they all hit the retaining stops built into the ramps.

Using Gimp and a map of the world I created this globe. I used paths to create the continents, the latitudinal and longitudinal lines. Scroll down for animated version.

My first one for this year, basking at the edge of one of the local meadows this afternoon. Although butterflies have been popping up rapidly this month I wasn't sure when I was going to get my first one of these for the year, so this was a nice surprise, plus not a species I see as much as a lot of the others that are out there at the moment.

Since I haven't cropped any of my past 5 shots (and all were taken at the same focal length), you can really see how small this guy is, compared with the other insects. ISO 320 f/22 1/125sec

As we pack for our next trip, our camp cookware became an issue. Dating back from Cub Scout days, it was large and aluminum. Even when clean, rubbing your finger on it you would get a black oxide smudge. I didn't mind so much, but Jamie objected and suggested a new solution.

We settled on the GSI Pinnacle Dualist system. It included 2 insulated mugs with lids, 2 bowls, 2 telescoping foons and a hard-anodized 1.8L pot with strainer lid. The carry sack doubles as a wash basin.

The adverts stated that you could fit a backpacking stove and fuel inside the same kit. I was very dubious, but sure enough you can! We bought the Snow Peak Giga Power Stove with Piezo (self-starting). It sits on top of the fuel canister. This stove was so popular, that they were sold out and we got the one on display. They couldn't find the box with the hard case, but no worries: the GSI kit came with a soft carry pouch made just for this stove. All of it fits in the Dualist system.

Of course, the proof is in the pudding. Would this tiny stove really heat up enough water for two cups of water? In short, hell yes! It boiled two large coffee cups of water in 7 minutes. You can see in the photo that it is hot enough to make the nickel-plated stove stand glow red. And that was at maybe 1/8 of the valve open? WOW!

So, it was a bit spendy, especially since we already had stuff. However, this small kit replaces a huge aluminum set and a Coleman camp stove, in a package just a bit bigger than the propane fuel bottle for the camp stove. We got quality stuff that takes 1/10 the space and 1/50 the weight, and I am confident it will last for years.
