This was a smaller swell, though I liked the symmetry and well defined smaller sprays as it hit the pier.

A moth-like Small Skipper (Thymelicus sylvestris) feeding on Lavender. Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire, UK. There's a chance that this is an Essex Skipper - but I'm not sure. If anyone has any better idea, please let me know!

Pieris rapae, the small white, is a small- to medium-sized butterfly species of the whites-and-yellows family Pieridae.

There were more Small Tortoiseshell butterflies than any other sort at Newby Hall this week - more than I've seen all summer.

A glimpse of a corner in Bois D Arc, Missouri. Please don’t give it your best high school French pronunciation, either! Here in the Ozarks, we call it “Bo Dark”..... Several years ago, there used to be some cool old gas pumps; you can see the base of one, if you look closely. You might see a few ghosts, too, so maybe a closer look is not advised....

It seemed at first like they were dead, lying on their back and not moving. But with a nudge, they suddenly come to life, start moving their legs and even defiantly raise up their minuscule claws, ready to meet any challenger!

When they are fully grown, it takes two hands to carry them.

The New Mexican Whiptail Lizard like other whiptail lizards are all females who reproduce by parthenogenesis. Its eggs require no fertilization, and its offspring are exact and complete genetic duplicates of the mother. Since there is no genetic variation except that which occurs through mutation, the New Mexico Whiptail cannot evolve as other species do.

We have many of these that live in our yard enjoying whatever whiptail lizards enjoy doing. Another creature that likes to catch flies. This one is about to lay eggs and her babies will add to our whiptail population.
