7th September: Slice!

First time I've got around to a shot of the obligatory fruit slice in fizzy pop. It's actually a slice of orange (but looks like lemon, ok, it looks like an orange, not sure what I was thinking). Image is cropped (didn't like seeing the entire center of the fruit, seemed to affect the composition. All sorts of processing in Photoshop (High pass filter, Noiseware filter, curves, levels, contrast). This was the last shot I took, as the batteries were failing in my Speedlight, just got away with it I think (also had some cheap spotlights each side of the glass).

This is definitely the prettiest time of year to play golf.

As always, your comments and faves are appreciated. Constructive criticism and suggestions are especially welcome as I believe they help to make me a better photographer. Thank you for taking the time to look at my photos.

This version of my week planner is designed for two family members (each member has its own row) - half of charm pack is needed to make it (for colorful parts) plus fabric for white sashing, fabrics for back and binding.

In version for four family members one charm pack is needed (for colorful parts) plus fabric for white sashing, fabrics for backing and binding.

It can be also used at the office.

Corners of each square are pockets to put there cards with plan for each day of the week or another information. These corners were made from 1/4 of charms and they are sewn between the rows.

Buckle is used to indicate day of the week. When the day changes, buckle is moved to another.

Depending on weight of the buckle (mine is quite heavy) buttons for secure the strip are needed.

Machine quilted (cotton batting was used) and machine bound.

For this photo, I really liked the simplicity in shapes of the avocado and its seed. I thought the combination of the seed in the foreground and rest of the avocado in the back was pleasing to the eyes as well. To take this photo, I set up two poster boards in front of a window near the front of my house. Then, I tilted the blinds of the window up a little ways to help bounce the light off the roof. In editing, I did not do much, only took some of the yellow out of the avocado and boosted the lights throughout the photo to make the avocado pop.

For this weeks question, I used the sun and blinds of a window to help light and create shadows for the photo. So, I decided to bounce the light of the roof to give it an overhead feel and achieve a small shadow and reflection of the avocado off the poster board. This gave the photo a simple shadow and a little more detail. Lastly, using only natural light made me move around my house to find the best lighting and create a little bit more of a challenge.

I finally ordered a few cutters from Ecrandal. I LOVE them! They have the greatest shapes available.

So this is my first time playing with my new pie cutter! I'm pretty happy with how they came out. The first pie is supposed to be apple...its a little harder to make apple than I thought! Then pumpkin, of course, and chocolate silk pie. :)

About CV3 Carbonaceous Chondrites:

This relatively rare METEORITE type is in my opinion one of the most interesting ones. They are almost not altered by heat nor pressure on their parent body (probably an asteroid), nor have they been exposed to water there. Consequently, among all the different types of meteorites, these provide the closest insights into the processes and conditions around the formation of our solar system. (approx. 4600 million years ago).

As per today we do not know certainly the complete story of their formation. Probably the different components we see here were formed freely floating in space and got assembled later to this rock. (Unlike igneous rocks formed on earth, where the different components usually crystalized from the same melt)

The round structures are chondrules, they give the name to the rock. We see different types of those. Probably chondrules were formed from melting of iron silicate dust by a sudden raise of temperature, followed by quick cooling. (Unknown events in the early solar system.)

Then we have some small white irregular refractory inclusions (also called CAIs for ‘Calcium Aluminium rich Inclusions’) that are even older. Because of their very high melting points probably they were not impacted by the chondrule melting events.

Finally, we have the fine-grained substance in between, the matrix. It contains different carbon compounds. According to certain theories the inorganic compounds that arrived to earth in these meteorites may have played a role in the emergence of life on our planet.

About the piece on this photo:

I acquired an unprocessed, 24gram piece. It was without any fusion crust and clearly eroded on the surface, as it has been exposed to weathering in the Sahara for many years. (For strict scientific analytical purposes such pieces are biased by possible earthly alterations. Fresh falls are preferred. )

I have sent the piece for slicing and polishing with my specific requirements for direction and thickness. The outcome was satisfactory: Visually the interior looks fresh, with many minute details. On top, the contrast of the dark matrix and the different colours of chondrites give it an esthetical look. (from a purely esthetical viewpoint the petrology of CV3 chondrites with lighter gray matrix as the famous Allende are less pleasant to look at.)

Japan, the Art of Sashimi, Tuna, Toro Sashimi.

In Japan, sashimi refers to the cutting of fish into slices as a culinary art.

It may look simple in appearance & often mistaken as simply slices of raw fish,…but from the choice of fish to the way of positioning the knife when slicing it, nothing is left to chance in the making of this typically Japanese delicacy. Sashimi is a true culinary art & part of Japan's gastronomic heritage, not only includes the cutting, but also the artistic aspect of the culinary composition of the fish.

The base ingredients of his sashimi are chosen with great care & should be exceptionally fresh. Sashimi can also be slices of crustaceans or shellfish, such as shrimp, scallop, lobster etc. However commonly used in sashimi are tuna, salmon, mackerel, sea bream & in the pacific area also pomfret, a perciform fish also known as butterfish, for sushi /sashimi the pomfret is called "monchong" or "kuro aji modoki".

Sashimi is usually served with grated cabbage, celery or white turnip, sometimes also with carrots or cucumber, sashimi can be eaten like with sushi with wasabi & soy sauce.

Tuna used for sashimi & sushi are usually one of two different species;

‘"Maguro", Bluefin Tuna is usually fairly lean,

"Ahi", Yellowfin Tuna is fattier, sometimes may also be labelled "Maguro" but normally, if you see maguro it will be bluefin tuna.

Further is Tuna for sushi/sashimi broken-up into subtypes, based on the fat content.

"Akami" is the leaner red meat from the sides of the fish for maguro. It has a sturdy aroma from the raw-freshness of the tuna meat. The top quality red meat maguro has extra mellow & elegant flavour, with a hint of sourness.

"Toro" is the term for the fatty part of the tuna, cut from the tuna belly loin.

Toro is further broken up into two distinct subtypes, it is more exclusive & expensive due to a limited percentage of the entire fish, the two types of "Toro" are;

"Chu-Toro", is the semi-fatty belly area of the tuna along the side of the fish between the akami & the o-toro. It is often preferred because it is fatty but not as fatty as o-toro.

This premium cut, highlighting the best qualities of the maguro, perfectly blends quality tuna fat for flavour, texture & the great fresh aroma of the red tuna meat.

"O-toro", is the fattiest portion of the tuna, found on the very underside of the tuna, the texture is densely marbled for a mouthful of creamy sweetness & a melt in the mouth texture.

Another picture from the "orange" project. I wanted to take a picture to look almost as if the orange had been sliced in multiple directions in mid-air. It took lots of skewers, cocktail sticks, stickiness and swearing to get it to stay put, and then a good hour in photoshop to clone out the sticks. Happy with the result though!
