The single lane highway that stretches from Melbourne to Canberra is a boring drive for some, but for me it was full of epic landscapes, with clouds lining themselves up as if they had been cut and pasted from The Simpsons.

The only direct route from Melbourne to Canberra is a single lane highway stretching through prairie land – something I imagine “middle America” must look like, although I’ve never been. My friend Malcolm, a Melbourne native, drove the whole way, complaining of the “boring scenery” as I gawked at this gorgeous drive. 4 hours of this view – if only Malcolm knew the 4 hour drive from Boston to New York City, maybe he’d think differently. Unable to stop as we were in a rush to get to a meat raffle (which I ended up winning – can you believe that? I can’t), I shot this through his windshield.

I took this from a spot in the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia overlooking the Schuylkill River. I was about 200' away I would guess with my lens out all the way to 250mm (375mm equivalent in 35mm format) and hand-held.

1883 - 1991
The main Hospital complex, which closed in 1991, is in a dilapidated state of repair and like many buildings of its age, asbestos is present. The buildings are derelict due to the asbestos, water penetration, vandalism and fire. The state of the buildings renders refurbishment largely impractical and demolition of the buildings started July 2008.

The Single Leaf Pinyon is the worlds only single needle pine tree. This tree is at UC Riverside's Botanical gardens.
Scientific name = Pinus Monophylla
Yields edible nuts and is native to California and Baja Mexico.
