NGC 4618 was discovered on 9 April 1787 by the German-British astronomer, Wilhelm Herschel, who also discovered Uranus in 1781. Only a year before discovering NGC 4618, Herschel theorised that the “foggy” objects astronomers were seeing in the night sky were likely to be large star clusters located much further away then the individual stars he could easily discern.

Since Herschel proposed his theory, astronomers have come to understand that what he was seeing was a galaxy. NGC 4618, classified as a barred spiral galaxy, has the special distinction amongst other spiral galaxies of only having one arm rotating around the centre of the galaxy.

Located about 21 million light-years from our galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici, NGC 4618 has a diameter of about one third that of the Milky Way. Together with its neighbour, NGC 4625, it forms an interacting galaxy pair, which means that the two galaxies are close enough to influence each other gravitationally. These interactions may result in the two (or more) galaxies merging together to form a new formation, such as a ring galaxy.

CN 2099 and 2562 lead a rerouted Q19991-29 down the ramp from 16th Street Tower, about to duck under 18th St and negotiate 21st St Crossing. Due to total replacement of the interlocking at Homewood, for several days all traffic normally routed via the former EJ&E to the south end of Markham Yard via Matteson could only access the north end, resulting in reroutes through the city. Northbound traffic used the ex-IC Chicago and Freeport Subdivisions to Munger to access the "J", and southbounds used the Waukesha Sub to the IHB connection at B-12, then the Eldson Sub from Blue Island to the Markham connection at Harvey. Due to clearance issues on the IC route through Chicago, intermodal traffic is not normally routed this way, thus, the rerouted trains could not operate with doublestacked containers, as is the norm on their regular route.

Enjoy a sunny Sunday, my friends!

A flash of inspiration this morning and this shot was born.

放晴了,走了一趟台南,心情也隨之綻放了~

I meant to have a short trip, a couple of hours, and it turned out to be a fruitful day... Happy Sunday evening, my friends!

Her twin main engines are noisily running and both propellers can be seen, spinning rapidly under the water. The reason the ship is not going anywhere is because both propellers are of the variable pitch type and the pitch setting is on zero.

"Singled up" means the mooring lines have all been let go and recovered on board the ship except for two lines for'ard, and two lines aft.

The aft lines can be seen in this image, one stern line and one spring line'

On the quayside, with his back towards the camera, un amarrador (a mooring man) awaits the order to 'Let Go', or in nautical parlance 'Leggo!

On the stern of the ship, un marinero (a seaman) awaits the same command to release the mooring lines.

Happy Friday and Weekend to all :)

It is very unusual to have single deck buses on a double deck rail service. Due to a few late problems, two single deck buses were drafted in to cover. This shouldn't normally happen but this is better than having no bus! Willesden Junction DE1616 was used in the morning.
