Dan Stevens stopped in en route to his weekend gig @ The Big Kahuna Cafe where he has been playing at least an annual gig there and numerous other venues in Maine for years now ( He used to live here in Maine, but Sailing, his love for the ocean, got him down to Connecticut where he currently is based out of). So not only a acoustic blues artist / singer songwriter but a sailor. Dans latest is a live recording of a great show near his home base It's called Road to Memphis .Lots of great blues tunes some his own and many classics, he studied with Dave Van Ronk in the Village and was most profoundly influenced by Rev Gary Davis who he was able to witness playing and has the same style of Gibson Guitar (J200) which there is a pic or two herein this set.
This is Dan's second appearance on the show
Singer, songwriter, fellow scouser, actor and friend. Here, caught candidly during break between takes while filming in Southport for musical movie "Perfectly Frank".
something's got me (re)started. again...
this afternoon, i took a couple of hours off work and went to Iguana Studios in Brixton, South London, with a demo-copy of my album in my bag, to sit down and talk plans through with the owner and main producer at the studios.
it wasn't at this table. but i love this shot. the space, the freedom, the lighting, the pregnancy, the possibilities it holds... it looks like a stage set, to me.
instead, we went and settled into the back room of this complex, just the two of us in a cramped little office, a demo-version of my album playing on one of the pcs, as we discussed ideas track by track...
i really hadn't expected us to listen to the whole thing (and felt kind of bad, *making* someone go through all that?!), but he seemed to like it, so we did. i've recorded there before, and he seemed to like my new direction. he was honest and frank about what he thought worked and which tracks he felt didn't quite sit right with the rest of the album. he also said some totally crazy things, i mean such outlandish stuff, i blushed and moved the conversation right along....hmm... much like this...
there's something about working with a warm, friendly italian guy who has built his own studio. he is brutally honest about the 'industry'. nothing he said surprised or disheartened me, but instead reinforced my personal reasons for doing all this. he's a talented guitarist, who decided to build his studios within the shell of an abandoned WW2 bullet factory in South London. boxes and boxes of copies of his own album piled up and lined the walls around us, his beautiful acoustic guitar - handmade by a friend - lay on the sofa behind us...
it has to be here.
anyway, before i knew it, 2hrs had passed and we'd laid some rough plans to record the album... most likely we'll do it in 3 chunks, seeing as i haven't won the lottery (yet) and so, have to budget for all this... but like i told him, my main, central reason for doing this is my own sanity. this dog will not leave me alone, won't cease barking, yapping & snapping. but he did manage to talk me down from 12-tracks to 10, and suggested we record an e.p. first, and see how i feel after that...
i am well aware that i need a realistic, calm partner in almost everything i do, and feel very lucky to have found such a great, honest producer.
i reckon it'll take a year. but with Andrea on my side, i know it'll be a fun, if emotionally & financially draining ride!
wish me luck!

Complete Timi Yuro biography: www.flickr.com/people/timiyuro/
Timi Yuro was an Italian-American gal who could belt out a ballad with such power she could peel paint. She had an undeniable soulful quality but also a keen sense of jazz phrasing . . . as well as pulling r'n'b and country music into the mix. Her first big hit was Hurt in 1961 and she followed it with the equally good What's a Matter Baby (Is It Hurting You?) the following year. Timi Yuro a lady who possessed a tremendous and unique voice. She made some great records.
This website is dedicated to Timi Yuro and set up by Catvas2, I’m not a member of a Timi Yuro group, and there is no cooperation with other Timi Yuro websites. These images-articles come from my collection. I thought others might appreciate these tidbits of forgotten history. More Timi Yuro information on my profile.

Dolly Parton at Newcastle Metro Arena.
I was reviewing the concert for Maverick Magazine and the Newcastle based Sunday Sun. Photography was only allowed from the mixing desk 2/3 the way back of the hall (which is enormous!). Not my best photos,. but all things considered, acceptable.

Yet another evening, yet another lovely experience with my hometown singer-songwriter Anna Nalick. Anna and I are enjoying a few minutes together pre-show, at Yoshi's Oakland.
This is her last scheduled show for 2015, and due to her laryngitis a month earlier, she had to cancel a number of shows, including a few in New England and one at home in Southern California. Good to catch up with her - and she said she's not 100% back, but she sounded awesome to me nevertheless.
With a number of hiccups in my personal life lately (including being a victim of a hit-and-run crash), I really appreciated the great music and thoughtful reflections from Anna. She is one of those special, rare musicians, along the lines of Tori Amos, who can serve as a therapist/shrink of sorts through their work.
Of course, I'm forever grateful to Anna for bringing me out of my shell over the years and giving me the courage to sing loud and proud. And for being a huge part of my travel memories. And for being one of my two bicoastal muses.
Speaking of travel and bicoastal muse, in 12 more days I would be in New York City to take in a Mariah Carey Christmas concert - yes, my other bicoastal muse. Anna wished me luck, advised me to practice singing every day, and also let me know that she had the honor of presenting an award to Mariah in person a while back. (Yes, my two bicoastal muses have met!) I am grateful for both of my bicoastal muses, and both of my hometowns.
