Each year since 1968 during a series of days close to the holidays, homemade candy canes are made at the Candy Palace. They are always high in demand with people lining up early to get one of the coveted 135 canes that would be made during the course of the day. I was lucky enough to get canes last year and decided not to try to get them again this year so that others could have the experience. But, it sure is fun to watch the process.
Since the euro was introduced, Europe has been selling its former coins by the pound.

Since most roads anywhere near the fest are closed off to cars, biking is always the quickest and easiest way to get down there. And they never have enough racks, even with probably 20+ rows set up.
This kind of shot is something I wish I had the DSLR for. DOF on the P&S is usually non-existent, which is hard for a DOF whore like me to handle.

Since 2008, when rapid increases in the prices for major grains helped to trigger outbreaks of civil unrest in more than 40 countries, scholars and policymakers have paid increased attention to the potential influence of global food prices on social and political instability. Compelling and provocative headlines have suggested that there is a direct relationship between food insecurity and conflict. However, we know from a conflict perspective that the story is always more complicated than those claims often imply. How does conflict affect food insecurity? How does food insecurity contribute to conflict? And how can development organizations effectively address both? Harvesting Peace: Food Security, Conflict, and Cooperation – the latest edition of ECSP Report – explores these complex linkages, drawing insights from scholarly work to help inform more effective programming for practitioners. Report author Emmy Simmons presents with commentary by Susan Bradley, Henk-Jan Brinkman, and Edward Carr.

Since we are short on power, I pulled out some items for halloween and took some pictures of the Wicked witch from the Wizard of Oz series, with a Bespaq table I aged up with spiderwebs, etc. I used candlelight for the neat shadows and lighting, which fits this doll.

First established in 1828, the gardens have been enjoyed as a public park by the people of Belfast since 1895. There is an extensive rose garden and long herbaceous borders and the tree enthusiast can seek out the rare oaks planted in the 1880s, including the hornbeam-leafed oak. Situated near Queens University Belfast, the Botanic Gardens is an important part of Belfast’s Victorian heritage and a popular meeting place for residents, students and tourists.
Charles McKimm came to the Royal Botanic Gardens in 1874, and was eventually appointed as Head Gardener. His enthusiasm caused many improvements to be made and the gardens were transformed. Belfast Corporation purchased the Gardens and renamed it as the Belfast Botanical Gardens Park. In 1903 McKimm was appointed to a newly created post of General Superintendent of Parks for Belfast.
Palm House history
Designed by Charles Lanyon, the Palm House is one of the earliest examples of a curvilinear cast iron glasshouse. Its construction was initiated by the Belfast Botanical and Horticultural Society in the 1830s. The two wings were completed in 1840, and were built by Richard Turner of Dublin, who later built the Great Palm House at Kew Gardens. The cool wing houses all year round displays of colour and scent using plants such as geranium, fuchsia, begonia and built displays. Construction of the Palm House began in 1839, and the Tropical Ravine, or Fernery, completed in 1889, is a fine example of horticultural Victoriana.
Tropical Ravine
The Tropical Ravine has had a £3.8m transformation and the listed building which dates back to 1887 has been restored with many of its original Victorian features reinstated and preserved. Split over two levels with an open reception area on the ground floor, the building has been modernised to make it more energy efficient with new triple-glazed windows installed to retain heat and create the right environment for the tropical plants it is home to. Visitors will now be able to learn about the conservation work and plant collection thanks to new interactive and digital exhibits. Accessibility has also been improved with the introduction of sensory facilities for sight and hearing-impaired visitors.

Since 1977 the mothers of the place of May have fought to find back their children taken away by the military dictatorship.
They gather every Thursday afternoon on the Plaza de Mayo in front of the presidential palace, and turn for half an hour around the pyramid of May, counterclockwise, to symbolically go back in time and to denounce the impunity of the militaries …
Today after more than 30 years fighting, the mothers are now grand mothers but are still gathering for the memory of their lost children and in the name of justice and human rights…
Fidela & Alberto have been kidnapped the 29 July 1976..(It's two days before I came to this world...)
If you like my work and wanna show it by inviting me to one of your groups, you are very welcome to do that, but please do not leave any graphic logos! I'll delete them.

Since I have no school today, I'm free to pick at the warts on my disfigured foot, which I think are burning off quite nicely!
Since this is a bucket list photo, it is the first picture I worked on when I got home. I had to clean up a lot of back splatter.

Since my wife had to work, I decided to take a walk at Luther Britt Park and I snapped some pictures.
“Since load is unbearable,
I can’t handle it on my head,
I may be extremely tired,
But ‘Monalisa’s smile’ should be,
There only for you, My baby.
Every mother is a woman who works Hard who tires a lot not only physically but also mentally. But when she looks upon her baby’s face!
She forgets about every pain.
She is just ‘THE MONALISA’ of the baby!
Since countdown for Mothers day has already begun (9th May), Sending mothers day gifts could be a sweet reminder of the love and concern you still hold for your mother.
Since I knew I was going to be taking pictures of Soviet things like this MiG-21, I took along my Soviet lens, the tiny no-frills-at-all KMZ Industar 50-2 f/3.5 "Russian Pancake". The effective focal length of 75mm is not convenient for this sort of thing - I had to "zoom with my feet" as far back as possible and wait for gaps in the crowd. Considering the lens isn't multicoated (or any-coated?), there's less flare than I expected, what with that one light pointing directly at me.
Since the water is expected to rise well above the 37 feet we expected we had to hitch a ride to move more things to higher ground.
Since I couldn't play and operate the camera at the same time I used a previously recorded selection.
J. Hudson & Co. ACME Specialist Whistles (since 1870). Birmingham, England, UK.
The original British Admirality Botswain’s Call, Pipe, or Whistle.
Handmade and hand tuned for ease of use. A naval link since 1870. Still made in the original UK workshops and used by Her Most Anglican and British Majesty’s Royal Navy since 1868. Used by navies throughout the world.
“There can be only one!”
The boatswain’s pipe is the “modern day” descendant of the flutes used by the Ancient Greeks and Romans to convey orders to the oarsmen and galley slaves. The first use of the whistle in the English Navy was durin crusades of the 13th Century.
It was during the 17th Century that it took on its current recognizable shape and became known as the “Call” or “Pipe”. Its symbolic importance was further emphasized when the Lord High Admiral of the Fleet wore a gold “Pipe”, called the “Whistle of Honor”, as a badge of rank. The standard officers’ call being made from silver.
The “Call” or “Pipe” is named after the boatswain. He was the officer who, being in charge of the rigging, issued more orders than the other officers. Frequently, the human voice was not sufficient to carry orders to men climbing the rigging, especially in storm conditions. The High pitch of the Boatswain’s “Call” could be relied upon to be heard above even the worst howling gales.
The ship’s crew were trained to respond instinctively to the commands of the “Call”. Instant reactions were essential in times of danger. The speed of the blowing indicated the speed with which the command was to be carried out.
The “Call” is the authentic British Admiralty Boatswain’s Pipe of the ACME (Wile E. Coyote / Road Runner) design. It has been manufactured continuously bh J. Hudson & Co. (Whistles) Limited since the 19th Century. Each part of the “Call” has a nautical name: Hole, Buoy, Keel, Gun, and Shackle.
There are three basic tones one of Her Majesty’s sailors make with a Boatswain’s Call: Plain, Warble, or Trill.
Traditionally, altering have called “Attention by Means” using his “Call”, before delivering a long order, the Boatswain officer would preface his “Long Pipe” with the words, “D’ye Hear There!”
It's been a while since in posted one of these. Been going through and cleaning up the camera roll and came across this old edit. #iphonecreation #theprocess

The Palace of Westminster, also known as the Houses of Parliament or Westminster Palace, is the meeting place of the two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom—the House of Lords and the House of Commons. It lies on the north bank of the River Thames in the heart of the London borough of the City of Westminster, close to the historic Westminster Abbey and the government buildings of Whitehall and Downing Street. The name may refer to either of two structures: the Old Palace, a medieval building complex most of which was destroyed in 1834, and its replacement New Palace that stands today; it has retained its original style and status as a royal residence for ceremonial purposes.
The first royal palace was built on the site in the eleventh century, and Westminster was the primary London residence of the Kings of England until a fire destroyed much of the complex in 1512. After that, it served as the home of Parliament, which had been meeting there since the thirteenth century, and the seat of the Royal Courts of Justice, based in and around Westminster Hall. In 1834, an even greater fire ravaged the heavily rebuilt Houses of Parliament, and the only structures of significance to survive were Westminster Hall, the Cloisters of St Stephen's, the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft and the Jewel Tower.

I've been taken by the evening, that much is obvious by now. Somewhere in my history is the realization that I love a world without shadows. Somewhere in the life of this tree is the moment she swallowed a stone, so I know that these roots can only reach so deep in the past. The death-date is 18-something, I can't make out the final digits. I'm squinting through the stress cracks, brushing back the lichen, looking for a detail from the time of dearly departed Sarah. She's been gone since the 10th of May.
Since I live alone, I tend to keep my fridge relatively empty. Larry's Market is just down the street, so I don't really need to have too many things in stock. Of course, if the apocalypse hits, I'm SOL.
Slight bit of vignetting and extra blueness courtesy of my Colorsplash flash and a blue gel.
