Since hippos can’t reach every corner of their massive body, many parasites and ticks cause health problems. The birds you see sitting on the hippos are plucking parasites, ticks, ear wax and dead skin off their back. These little birds known as oxpeckers are doing the hippopotamuses a massive favour. These birds feed on the parasite, ticks off the hippos back, and sound an alarm if they notice any threat. [credit Animal Ways]

Finally back! This is a very picturesque spot along the coast of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. I was able to get this shot just before the downpour.
This beautiful Neotropical hummingbird has been reclassified since I saw it nectaring at a feeder in Panama. The Blue-chested Hummingbird (Polyerata amabilis) was formerly placed in the genus Amazilia. It is also found in Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Nicaragua, but its numbers are sadly decreasing. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest and heavily degraded former forest.
Males – like this one – form leks to try to gain the attention of females during the breeding season.
It's been such a long time since we've had a genuine pea soup fog around here and on Sunday we were blanketed all day. I was finally persuaded to get my camera out of the bag after almost a year and it was the thick fog that did it.
I know many people like cemeteries for different reasons. I like them because they demonstrate an important and inevitable aspect of the life cycle. It's also because reading the inscriptions makes me wonder about what made up the life of the one who has shuffled off this mortal coil.
Graveyards are generally peaceful places and deliberately designed to be so. The fog seemed to emphasize that peace as well as a kind of timelessness, so there, in the quiet, I couldn't help but think while the people buried there may have finished with this life they are certainly busy in their next one--another part of the cycle.
Thus, the great hope: life goes on.

Been awhile since I've seen the Bobcats, but finally saw one yesterday and took several shots of him. I spent a bit of time one on one then left for an hour and returned. He was still in the general area looking for prey. I had other obligations and had to leave. He tried a few times to grab prey but was unsuccessful. Next time! Click for large view.
Since 2 years now I moved away from Adobe Ransonware, I am wondering if I should go back. Sometime I feel On1 is not rendering image like LR/PS was doing. For now I save 16$ a month for 2 years. May be I should do a trial an see where LR/PS are now, I still can use ON1 as a addon.
Not sure if LR has now the luminosity mask like ON1.
Since so many recognized my referenc eto the Band a flock of Seagulls on a recent shot thought I would use this shot to refer to one of there well known songs, This Gulls seems to have ran fron the flock

for Sliders Sunday & 100x walks #86
Another one taken in York a couple of weeks ago, this time at the end of a foraging walk for brunch which was eaten in Rowntree Park on what turned out to be a ridiculously mild day. Oh, how the weather has changed since then! HSS!
Since I am travelling I cannot respond to comments, sorry.
It simply takes too long with weak internet
If you decide to travel along this highway into the bowels of the Universe, carry enough fuel to cover the billions of light years ahead of you. You won't find a place to refuel. When you have travelled this distance without finding anything, not even a little bit of intelligent life and you reach the far reaches of the Universe... don't be scared... there's nothing there, either. Only the "nothing". Or since everything is cyclical, perhaps you have returned to the place where you started, full of wisdom from your long trip. It's probably better to look for intelligent life on Earth, but it's also very likely that you'll have a hard time finding it. Don't worry about not understanding the Universe or the reason for its existence... you're not Einstein, but one day you'll understand that... The Universe is wounded, but it still has infinity ahead of it. It still has you and me. Merry Christmas to all and to the infinite Universe that is within you.
Gregory Alan Isakov - The Universe

Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Parts VI–IX
"Shine On You Crazy Diamond", was written as a tribute to Syd Barrett, one of the founders of Pink Floyd. He was also known as "The Crazy Diamond Syd". Barrett was a very creative musician and is considered one of the rock icons, with a strong influence on many artists, very especially to David Bowie. Syd Barrett is a key piece to understand the evolution of rock in the 70s.. Excessive drug use, especially LSD, caused him serious mental health problems. Syd Barrett died in 2006 at the age of 60. Always shine diamond.
The Universal is a science fiction song written as a tribute to two films by film director Stanley Kubrick. In the video, the Blur members wear outfits similar to Alex and his gang of thugs, the protagonists of the movie "A Clockwork Orange." The image used for the cover of the single alluded to what is possibly Kubrick's best film: "2001: To Space Odyssey."
We haven't changed that much in 300,000 years of evolution.

It's been a while since I posted a lighthouse photo, and I do have a few more that I feel are worth sharing. This is the Cape Neddick Light, also known as Nubble Light or just the Nubble. Built in 1879, it is located on Nubble island which is just 90 meters off Cape Neddick Point, in Southern Maine. The lighthouse is only 12 meters high but because it sits on top of a steep rocky island, the light is actually 27 meters above sea level. The Nubble is a famous American icon and as such, a picture of it among with pictures from other prominent man made structures (like the Taj Mahal and the Great Wall of China) was carried by the Voyager Spacecraft, should it fall into the hands of intelligent extraterrestrials. Only the lighthouse keeper has access to the island and as you can imagine the small park at the tip of the cape right across from the lighthouse is almost always crowded with people enjoying the view of this beautiful structure and the rugged shoreline.

Castello dei Parmensi since the twelfth century, first passed to the Da Correggio family, the Terzi family and from 1458 to the Sanseverino family, until 1612, when the Farnese family had Countess Barbara beheaded and this passed to the Duchy.
Transformed by the Sanseverinos from Rocca Quadrilatera into a residence, in 600 'it was transformed and enlarged by Ranuccio II Farnese and finally Duke Francesco Farnese had the façade redesigned with the use of 4 corner towers between 1697 and 1707. Bourbon promoted the internal renovation and the Ducal Chapel dedicated to St. Liborius.
After the unification of Italy, the state dispersed the collections and magnificent furnishings that were destined for Savoy residences or museums, including the Quirinale.
Today the main floor hosts temporary exhibitions.

Ever since Istanbul is Istanbul (song text: French/Turkish lyrics)
Lying down on a rock in the middle of Kanlica,
I make my tears swim towards Hisar,
There’s nothing left to do, she wanted to go and went away
Though I understand, it pains me deeply, as it ended so one-sidedly.
I now need the lodos (southwest winds), a paddle, a boat
A few bottles of red wine in the hidden stash, both the earth and sky are red
I curse at whatever came and passed, if it’s vulgar so be it
The morning star, left from the evening, falls on me.
Oh, ever since Istanbul is Istanbul,
It’s never witnessed such grief
I’m dying from your love
There’s no trace of pride left in me.
Ever since Istanbul is Istanbul,
It’s never witnessed such grief
I’m dying from your love
There’s no trace of pride left in me.
What a pity, how man is defeated by himself,
No cure for betrayal has been found, the heart is an immense black void
Nothing can be done, that’s just how the heart is, it only loved
I’m about to know a new skin, a new excitement.
I now need the lodos (south west winds) , a paddle, a boat
A few bottles of red wine in the hidden stash, both the earth and sky are red
I curse at whatever came and passed, if it’s vulgar so be it
The morning star, left from the evening, falls on me.
Oh, ever since Istanbul is Istanbul,
It’s never witnessed such grief
I’m dying from your love
There’s no trace of pride left in me.
Ever since Istanbul is Istanbul,
It’s never witnessed such grief
I’m dying a wretched death from your love
There’s no trace of pride left in me.

T-Minus two hours. It's been months since I've been out nightscaping and I'm feeling like Rip VanWinkle, as I am throwing my gear in the car on my way to the Nightscape Photography Conference In Moab Utah.
So proud to announce that I have been invited to speak at the conference.......Wait, wait, hold-up. I'm not sure if I was "invited" It was more like I finagled my way into a spot on the staff, It's really a bizarre story too hard too believe, but to make a long story short, after talking to Royce Bair on the phone I managed to, via Royce's kindness land a spot in a side conference room.
That quickly changed to two presentations and two workshops. I have spent the last two years preparing a line of products that teaches the techniques I use in the field to navigate, plan alignments and predict the weather.
I think I found a niche.
The Smart App bootcamp sold-out in 5 Hrs. Whaaaat!
Wait, it gets better. Well maybe I will save that for my next post.
I should mention that Wayne Pinkston had a hand in my participation there, he has got to be the coolest "Night walker" on the face of the Earth.
Thanks Wayne and Thanks to Royce as well. You guys are two amazing people!!!
Wish me luck my friends!!!
Thanks as always, for taking the time to take a look at my photos, and reading my descriptions.
I am always grateful for your views, comments, faves, and support, they are truly appreciated!! Have a great day my friends!! :)

Since the bushfires started, I am seeing new birds in my yard. Birds are smart, they know where free food can be had, even if it's not what they would normally eat. Among them are Lorikeets and honey eaters. They can get a drink in my yard and will take whatever I put out for them. Fresh fruit will be added to the menu.
I fear many brds will die of starvation in the weeks ahead, all the flowering trees and so many insects will have perished, and there will be nothing for the birds to eat.
since I can only use one arm I cannot take any photos for the coming weeks. Therefore just photos from the vaults.
This one is taken on an early morning on our way to Kinderdijk
Ever since i got word of this run i imagined one shot of this train, and it definitely did not fail. The sun and timing couldn't have been more perfect.

Brighton Methodist Church
Built in 1881 by Norwegian immigrants, Brighton Methodist Church, the small country chapel shown here, cost $1,800 to build - a fortune at the time.
Rural churches were an important social part of family life in the 1880s. On Sunday, the family would dress in their Sunday best clothes for the church service and social gathering that followed the services.
This was often viewed as an opportunity to escape the hard work and isolation of farm life.
As soon as a settlement was established, the local families would join together to build a church for their community.
Many of the churches had strong ethnic and cultural ties to the specific nationality of the settlement. It was not uncommon to hear a sermon in German, Norwegian, or Swedish instead of English.
After the church closed in 1984, it was donated to Farmamerica by the congregation.

Rhinoceros: since 1973 the population has recovered well and increased to 544 animals around the turn of the century. To ensure the survival of the endangered species in case of epidemics animals are translocated annually from Chitwan to the Bardia National Park and the Sukla Phanta Wildlife Reserve since 1986. However, the population has repeatedly been jeopardized by poaching: in 2002 alone, poachers killed 37 individuals in order to saw off and sell their valuable horns.[6] Chitwan has the largest population of Indian rhinoceros in Nepal, estimated at 605 individuals out of 645 in total in the country.
Since taking the challenge of learning a bit about high key for macro Mondays I think it will be a good idea to learn more about low key as well. I believe this image qualifies as a low key shot. However, it does not count as learning about low key, it was an accident :) The flower was highlighted by the sun and there were deep shadows all around it.
I'm not really sure what I would use low key images for on a regular basis but the high key images will be handy when I have something to sell.
Regardless, I never want to stop learning, even if it is just for the sake of learning.
Have a wonderful day and happy snapping.
Since I have no new small birds to post, here is a close Bald Eagle fly by from a session on December 03.
Stathcona County, Alberta.
Known as "the horseshoe shop" in Antrim, it was originally built as a blacksmith’s in 1887.
Since then it has sold a variety of wares, including "fancy goods" (whatever they are), wallpaper and paint. It looks vacant now.

That if I can't be close to you
I'll settle for the ghost of you
I miss you more than life.

Your memory is ecstasy
I miss you more than life

Since I didn't have any success photographing birds today I thought I'd spend some time going through images of this past spring. I'll take the next few days to post a bunch of warblers, and other birds! Here is one shot of a perched Tree Sparrow with fog in the background that was actively being burned away by the sun!

Since we summited Mt Tammany after sunset last time, we tried again a week later and arrived 30 minutes before sunset. This time the sun was mostly covered by low clouds yet managed to peak out for a minute or less from time to time. I wasn't brave enough to go all the way out to the edge which offered a better POV and would include the Delaware River - the down-sloping boulders looked way too slippery for my comfort level.
Image was taken 10 minutes after sunset. If you zoom in you shall see a twister-like cloud formation (1/3 from the left side). That's an artificial cloud induced by some industries; there were 3 of them on the horizon (only 1 was included in this shot).
Happy Monday!
