A new Shuttle Fleet scenario was released today on Orbithangar.com, simulating the use of the shuttles extended robotic arm to place an astronaut in position to repair the damaged tile on the shuttle's underside. The picture is a simulated solargraph showing the track of the sun over the course of a year. The darker portions represent periods of more clouds. Lower bands are the sun in winter, while higher ones are summer.
Traditionally, this type of image is created via a long multi-month exposure with a pinhole camera. Instead of waiting this long, this picture was created in software using solar radiation data from here, with help from this solar position code and processing. Both thickness and transparency of the lines are tied to this data.
The math seems mostly correct, since this looks very similar to real solargraphs from pinhole cameras, although there may be some issues with converting from the solar position in spherical coordinates to a 2D image. Using a cylindrical projection would probably achieve better results since this is what happens with the pinhole cameras built using tubes.
The data is for Austin, TX, although the code could be reused for anywhere in the world provided that solar radiation data exists of a sufficient time resolution.
