Logan's PJs and his favorite towel

Russ Miles and David Dawson came to Skills Matter and gave a one day workshop on how to inject simplicity in software. Working in teams, delegates created their code to navigate a real world AR drone (without crashing it!), learning how to break down a problem and tradeoff for the right values in Architecture, Design and Code. How to create the right number of tests to build the right level of confidence and how to enable Real Application Agility through Simplicity.

You can see the SkillsCasts (film, code, slides) of the day at: skillsmatter.com/event-details/home/russ-miles-practical-...

The first lesson in the Simplicity Photography Class is to position an object in front of a light source and photograph it from three different angles.

This was a difficult experiment for me to execute since the kiddos kept coming over and knocking the house off the stool or playing with it. Notice Elias and Noah in the background on angles 1 and 2.

Here the light is directly falling on the front of the barn.

Simplicity

This was my verst photo of Simplicity. I really like all of the empty wall in the background, making it easy to tell what the subject of the photo is. To create contrast in this image, I used the basics panel to turn the whites and the blacks up, then brought out the lost detail using highlights and shadows. The mood I was trying to create was loneliness. I wanted to make my subject look sad and lonely, and also bored, because all he has to do was mess around with this tennis ball.

My newest simplicity bag in this lovely fabric by Anna Maria Horner. This print and colorway reminds me of henna tattoos. The striped fabric is a reproduction civil war print.

My favorite tunic pattern strikes again! White cotton with silver snowflakes pattern.

Assignment: PCA116 - Simplicity

One aspect of composition that is tough to pay attention to is "simplicity". How do you tell a story, or single out a subject and remove all the clutter that might distract a viewer?

A photographer said at a talk I went to that you should be able to say a simple, single phrase about any photograph you take. As soon as you have to use more than one phrase to describe an image, you already have too much clutter.

Several techniques for simplifying an image are to make a tighter crop, isolate the subject better (with light or depth of field) or to pay attention to the background when you take the shot.

The assignment for this week is to shoot an image that can be summarized in a single phrase. To increase the interest, I'd like you to leave off the title and have the people critiquing your image come up with suggetions when they look at it at the end of the week.

WIT

Because I am so drawn the flowers, I chose this Chinese Anemone bud from a trip to Longwood Gardens. The bushes of flowers were quite full of flower blooms with buds mixed in each cluster of flowers. It took a while before I found one isolated enough from all the rest to get this shot. The flowers were located in a mix of sunny and dappled light so I looked for one that would not have a dark/light contrast. The leaf was intentionally left as part of the bud.

This shows simplicity because the background is blurred so that the viewer's eye is drawn to the flowers in the middle and left of the picture.
