We should have all been packing for a return trip this week, but alas Lockdown 3 has put paid to that!

How come sequels are never as good as the original?

So, like everyone else I’m still archive dipping and struggling with what to post next… I’ve plenty of images to go at but the enthusiasm to see a good one is eluding me. Luckily Skye is providing me with my go to folder during this lockdown dip of motivation… hope you like it!

My simple pleasure is to seek out and find new coffee shops, to see who it is and what it is about. Each has its twist and the pleasure is the drink of course but also to find those key elements that make this a unique place.

captured in the warm alleys of palma de mallorca, this photograph presents a moment of reflection and solitude. the subject, seated against a textured wall, is engrossed in her own world, enjoying a simple meal. the warm tones emphasize the summer heat, while her expression suggests a calm escape from the bustling surroundings. her tattoos and unique style add a layer of personal narrative to the image, contrasting with the historical charm of the old town's narrow streets.

Monday morning I went out into the garden where the wild rose bushes are blooming - both white and red. I couldn't photograph them there, as it was raining and blowing a gale. So I brought a few indoors to shoot. They are so delicate that the petals start to wilt almost as soon as they've been cut ... so I worked quickly with a few white ones. The scent of wild roses is so lovely - something I miss with commercially grown ones!

HTT!! ;o)

Shooting our own 'home grown' flowers is one of my Simple Pleasures and a way to record the pleasures of summer.

and Textural Tuesday

I'm collecting an album of Simple Pleasures to celebrate the ordinary things that I take for granted - and might overlook and not think to photograph.

I thought of Cezanne when I started looking closely at pears. They are such beautiful shapes - and a seasonal fruit that I've had growing in my garden most of my life.

One of my Simple Pleasures is old books. I love the kind with hand-cut pages, or gold edges, and leather-bound and illustration plates - sheer heaven!

I'm having to post and run today - I'll hope to catch up this evening. We have strong gales as well as driving rain here, which means power cuts are quite likely. Not enough maintenance has been done by the privatised electricity companies - cutting back the trees close to the overhead lines. Fingers crossed here!

So, I had to abandon my "journal" image today because the conditions were close to perfect for creating and playing with frozen bubbles. I say close to perfect because we had a very slight breeze that kept blowing away the bubbles. I could only handle the cold for about 25 minutes at which point my fingers were too numb to continue.

Breaking in the new neighbors who moved in before the holidays, they were outside while I was bundled up, blowing bubbles and running around trying to catch them before they popped. They will get used to seeing me run frantically up and down the street, camera in hand trying to catch the right light.

It's Friday! Hope your day is full of fun opportunities to play a bit, like the simple pleasure of blowing bubbles.

Caught in the morning sunshine. As kids an orange was a special treat in the Xmas stocking! Now it is hard to recall how special the taste of a fresh orange was. These small oranges with their leaves still on made me appreciate them again ;o)

A Simple Pleasure I enjoy. Throwing things together and seeing what I can create!

It's rather new for me - I've very little space to spread 'stuff' about - most of it is in cupboards, boxes or on shelves. So unusual combinations don't just happen. I've started taking a few unlikely bits and seeing what happens when I put them together.

Lots of failures - of course! But sometimes things do work! Here I had a few blue agapanthus flowers, and I dug out some blue ribbon and added a couple of crystal spheres. I had to shoot quickly, as the sun can start a fire when it burns through a crystal (I know! I've done it!!). I was after textures and things blue ;o)

Most of my reading these days is done on my iPad using the Kindle app. But my birthday brought me a new 'real book'. I didn't realise how big and heavy it was - but it is proving to be a real delight! It is 'Pilgrimage' by Annie Leibovitz. What caught my imagination was that this was a photographer NOT on assignment, but shooting simply for her own pleasure, shooting what she felt moved to shoot. And even better, in 2010 she set out with just a small 'point and shoot' camera as her kit. I wanted to know more!

So the photo here includes the small point-and shoot Canon Ixus 100, which was my pocket camera at that time too. I don't know if it was the one Annie used - but I it was the closest I could get to her choice.

As the 'pilgrimage' developed and began to shape up as a potential book, she did begin to use more professional kit, and also enlisted an assistant - a little disappointing from my point of view. But it is fascinating to follow her journeys and thoughts along the way. I am still enjoying it - and keep dipping into the actual photographs. A simple pleasure to relish on a cold winter night ;o)

I don't know who this boy is and I usually don't photograph kids but this seemed innocent enough. The young lad was out with his grandfather and judging by the tag sticking out, must have gone shopping together for a new hat and feed corn. His mother or grandmother would have removed the tag right away.

The Canada Geese are wild and on a refueling stop as they were migrating south. They didn't seem to mind being so close to the boy at all. Free food seems to transcend most barriers. My goal here was to catch the corn the boy was throwing in mid flight and if you look closely, you can see it.

One thing that makes grocery shopping more palatable is the colourful array of flowers stocked by increasing numbers of stores. So most weekly shopping trips include long, lingering looks at the banks of flowers on offer. And once home, trying to find containers to hold all the delights that I have found irresistible! Some of the most successful solutions have been a little strange .... as here where a teapot has a second career! ;o)

We live in a valley (or 'howe' as it is called here) and the steep hillsides mean that most of the year we don't get the lovely late afternoon/evening slanting sunlight that can turn the world into a golden glow. So this shot was a special pleasure - I caught the light through the greenhouse windows as I returned home after shooting the post harvest hay-baling. When I saw the shot on the PC monitor I thought the light motes were insects, but I think maybe they are the little remnants left by the hay baler.

If you have never tried it - Japanese Sake (rice wine) is a wonderful accompaniment to a Japanese meal. It is a clear rice wine that is served warm in these tiny, delicate porcelain cups. It is decanted into the small bottle first, then warmed to room temperature. The tiny cups ensure that the sake does not cool down before you drink it. It can be quite deceptive, as warm alcohol goes to your head remarkably quickly!

I've had this small sake set since I was a student - signs of a mis-spent youth perhaps ;o)

October landscape

One of my Simple Pleasures

Living in the country it's a pleasure to watch the changing seasons. And I love the shoot the local landscape throughout the year. It's an ever-changing beauty - never quite the same formation of clouds, sun, and land - changing even from day to day. This was the view as the month of October started, looking towards the mountain of Bennachie, Aberdeenshire.

"Bennachie (Scottish Gaelic: Beinn na Cìche) is a range of hills in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

It has several tops, the highest of which, Oxen Craig, has a height of 528 m (1733 feet). Though not particularly high, compared to other peaks within Scotland, the mountain is very prominent, owing to its isolation and the relative flatness of the surrounding terrain, and dominates the skyline from several viewpoints."

A Simple Pleasure of mine. Slices of apple and pear, a dash of lemon juice and plenty of honey, eaten with a slice of wholemeal bread. A pleasure learned when young, as we grew fruit trees, and stored the fruit over winter too.

It used to be a favourite supper of mine (still is)

Every year, as the blackberries (which we called brambles) ripened, my family would go out into the countryside and pick the ripening berries. My mother would then bake the most delicious bramble and apple pies, that were our special treats. The poem by Seamus Heaney brought back the tastes and smells, and the scratches too that were all part of the fun!

"Blackberry-Picking"

Late August, given heavy rain and sun

For a full week, the blackberries would ripen.

At first, just one, a glossy purple clot

Among others, red, green, hard as a knot.

You ate that first one and its flesh was sweet

Like thickened wine: summer's blood was in it

Leaving stains upon the tongue and lust for

Picking. Then red ones inked up and that hunger

Sent us out with milk cans, pea tins, jam-pots

Where briars scratched and wet grass bleached our boots.

Round hayfields, cornfields and potato-drills

We trekked and picked until the cans were full

Until the tinkling bottom had been covered

With green ones, and on top big dark blobs burned

Like a plate of eyes. Our hands were peppered

With thorn pricks, our palms sticky as Bluebeard's......

This is one of the many new things we will be seeing around our new digs in New York.

Friendlier squirrels, a Great Lake, a beautiful beach and Todd's wonderful family would all be a block or two away.

And the title of this photo? It's all part of the Golden Rule and just plain ol' good advice. As a wise man once said...

Happiness is the simple pleasures and not that complicated after all

Walking beside the sea is one of my Simple Pleasures and a wonderful way to relax, unwind, and let the cares of the day drift away. The sounds of the waves, the call of the seagulls, and if I am lucky, the sun shining on the wet sand, and on me too ;o)

Winter is mainly an indoor time for me, and get a little stir-crazy! I miss the sunshine, the open skies, colours and life outdoors. So this winter I've been shooting what's around me - making a record of the small things that brighten the day and bring me pleasure - the things I'd probably overlook in the hurry to get on with the day!.

I thought about the shots I was collecting, unsure how to use them. Then the Christmas and New Year floods across the UK made me aware of all the people who have suddenly lost these small pleasures - and so much more. Maybe it's not so daft to praise them ....

Somehow we seem to have lost those winter nights with a log fire, a reading lamp and the cosy quiet of an evening with a good book!

And I miss that. It was one of my Simple Pleasures

The TV and the smartphone dominate now, and even in rural Scotland an open fire can be frowned on at times.

A Simple Pleasure of mine. A good fountain pen, and a notebook.

I used to collect quotes and sayings - bits of philosophy - and illustrations too. This notebook is full of Zen and Taoist sayings. ah! the sublime simple pleasure of freshly cleaned, warm white flanel sheets. it trumps that first handful of hot popcorn, downing a cold brew on a hot summer day, and finishing a book. but in my opinion its slotted behind that first cup of coffee in the morning, a deep playful kiss, and the end of business on friday.

have a great weekend my friends. i hope you all enjoy a few simple pleasures - and take lots of dirty pictures. cheers
