Hellebores are native to much of Europe, along the north coast of Turkey and into the Caucasus, with most found in the Balkans.
The "petals" are actually sepals - the centre is comprised of "nectaries" (petals that hold nectar). Gardeners note - they're a tasty snack to slugs and snails!
Blooming in winter and early spring, they're always a welcome sight in the garden, whatever the weather!
LEGENDS and HISTORY:
Helleborus niger is commonly called the Christmas rose, from a legend that it appeared in the snow from the tears of a young girl who had no gift to give the Christ child in Bethlehem.
During the Siege of Kirrha in 585 BC, Hellebore was reportedly used by the Greek warriors to poison the city's water supply. The defenders were subsequently so weakened that they were unable to defend the city from assault.
An overdose of medication containing Hellebore has been suggested as a cause of the death of Alexander the Great.

Simple pillowcase-style sundress. I shirred the top and used bias tape for the ties. I based the dress on this tutorial: fromanigloo.blogspot.com/2010/05/playful-days-double-laye..., except I did not make it double layered. (gets too hot for double layers in the summer)
