The driver climbs aboard British Railways BR Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 no 92220, simmering on the previously numbered Platform 15 at the back of York Station, before heading The White Rose through Huddersfield and over the Pennines en route to Manchester and onward to Shrewsbury.
This view, just like the rest of the station, has changed rather dramatically in the intervening years since this photo was taken.
The 9F was designed by Robert Riddles and was the last in a series of standardised locomotive classes designed for British Railways, hence the appropriate name of 'Evening Star'.
The absence of flanges on the middle set of driving wheels, as is visible in this photograph, now prevents the class appearing again at York Station at the head of any mainline tours.

'Black 5' no 45305 simmers away in Loughborough Central's platform 2 on the dining train. Ken has built a big back end in the firebox and that is slowly cooking through and providing steam for heating the coaches. We have both had our fish supper in the company of the guard. He's having a smoke and I'm preparing to drive to Leicester and back.

"Rekolok" Class 50-35 2-10-0 No.50 3648-8 in light steam on-shed at Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf, having worked a special charter to and from Freyburg during the previous day. There were no restrictions to the visiting public for access around this locomotive, despite it emitting steam and oil being present on the shed floor, a totally different attitude there in Germany, where common sense prevails and is respected! As well as a museum, Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf shed is very much a working environment and a refreshing experience in the 21st century.

Simmering is not the place in Vienna with the Habsburg history, the imperial buildings and the white Lippizaner horses. Simmering is an industry, working-class and railway district ! So on the left side of this view is the beginning of the tracks of Vienna Mainstation and on the right side of Vienna "Kledering" freight yard ...

Awaiting its next duty at Ropley yard on the Mid-Hants Railway is former Southern Railway U-Class 31806. Rebuilt to a 2-6-0 along with 19 sister locomotives, this loco began life as one of the unfortunate K Class 2-6-4Ts, a type that proved unstable at speed on the Southern’s principal lines.
