Remember when this building used to say WGAY? That was always good for a snicker, but interestingly those call letters are now used by an Internet station that actually IS gay-themed.

The acorn was constructed in 1842. Or something. I dunno, for some reason I became obsessed with this park and wrote most of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acorn_Park . Um. Yeah.

I've known Jon since I was a junior in high school. I had just torn my hamstring during a rehearsal of the "gym scene" in West Side Story. The Jets had carried me off the stage after the disastrous dance with Riff and laid me down on a stack of choral risers in the wings.
I was laying there in the dark, staring at the ceiling as tears rolled down my cheeks, when I heard a voice. "What's up, Briar Rose?" it asked. Apparently, I had an eerie resemblance to a dead princess waiting to be kissed. Sticking with the Disney theme, I answered in kind, "Not much, Quasimodo." Jon is not a hunchback, nor is he French, but he did have the whole lurking-in-the-dark-on-the-fly thing going for him and there blossomed a beautiful friendship.
Since then I have given up my stage for my love of photoj and Jon has become the performer. Every so often our paths cross. I've had the opportunity to shoot both his album covers and then this weekend, my employer gave me an assignment to shoot our local boy at the 2nd Annual Silver Spring Blues Festival.

I usually try to stay away from this shot. Every event at Silver Plaza has this exact set-up. But Jon being a solo performer with an interesting look, I went for it, capturing the banner in the background and allowing a lot of space at the top of the frame because it was clean and the color of the canopy tied in to the shoot.
From the Vintage Ephemera archives comes this image of my mother and her mother, Marvel Jones, at Silver Springs. As a kid I was fascinated with my grandmother's attic in Michigan, (growing up in a suburban Florida ranch house, basements and attics were exotic to me.) I remember climbing up the narrow steps of the attic was like entering a time machine, as it was full of fascinating items from the past. Full of vintage ephemera. Today I sit in an attic in Florida, surrounded by stuff from Marvel's Michigan house and I wonder what she was thinking as she contemplated the underwater view at Silver Springs.
