Orvieto Cathedral houses the San Brizio Chapel (more correctly the Capella della Madonna di San Brizio) - famous for the fresco cycle by Luca Signorelli (painted 1499 - 1503) depicting visions of paradise, hell and the end of the world. When you walk into the great space, remember that many of the people going there in the 1500s would have believed that the end of the world and the day of judgement were due at any moment. Talk about a fear driven religion - or was it just that Signorelli liked painting naked male bodies?

The Medieval Duomo of Orvieto is among the most impressive examples of medieval architecture in Italy. Construction began in 1290 and took almost four centuries to complete. The cathedral's façade is embellished with mosaics that sparkle in the sunlight. The Gothic style interior holds frescoes by Fra Angelico and Signorelli and beautiful wooden choir stalls.

Fra Angelico started the decoration of the vault in 1447, painting only two sections. Perugino was asked to resume the work in 1489, but he never began. After being abandoned for almost 50 years the decoration of the rest of the vault was awarded to Signorelli on 5 April 1499. He added scenes with the Choir of the Apostles, of the Doctors, of the Martyrs, Virgins and Patriarchs.

looking down at a corner of the terrace. from the balcony. at the arch of jasmine you enter under from the street. not one of three french doors. and note the mature hedge between you and the nice neighbor next door. imagine bringing the terracotta look here into the floors of the rooms just inside. and imagine having all three sets of doors thrown open to the lake view and serving wine on the terrace to your friends during twilight before wandering up to town for dinner and a show at the Teatro Signorelli. you'll be home, walking, before most people get to their car. not nice to lord it over the rest of us. tempting, tempting.

Decoration of this chapel was begun by Fra Angelico in 1447, but the main panels were painted by Luca Signorelli between 1499 and 1504.
