Sir James Shand MBE (28 January 1908 – 23 December 2000) was a Scottish musician who played traditional Scottish dance music on the accordion. His signature tune was "The Bluebell Polka".
James Shand was born in East Wemyss in Fife, Scotland, son of a farm ploughman turned coal miner and one of nine children. The family soon moved to the burgh of Auchtermuchty. The town now boasts a larger than life-sized sculpture of Shand. His father was a skilled melodeon player. Jimmy started with the mouth organ and soon played the fiddle. At the age of 14 he had to leave school and go down the mines. He played at social events and competitions. His enthusiasm for motor-bikes turned into an advantage when he played for events all round Fife. In 1926, he did benefit gigs for striking miners and was consequently prevented from returning to colliery work. One day Shand and a friend were admiring the instruments in the window of a music shop in Dundee. His friend said: "It wouldn't cost you to try one," so Shand walked in and strapped on an accordion.[citation needed] The owner, Charles Forbes, heard Shand play and immediately offered him a job as travelling salesman and debt-collector. He soon acquired a van and drove all over the north of Scotland. He switched to the British chromatic button accordion, an instrument he stuck with for the rest of his life.
Being a keen motorcyclist, Shand was also an enthusiastic supporter and spectator at the annual Isle of Man TT races. He also sponsored a motorcycle road racer from Errol, Perthshire called Jack Gow, a multiple Scottish Motorcycle Racing champion and later a motorcycle dealer in Dundee. Jack Gow was the son of Andy Gow who drove the bus which transported the Shand tour. Shand's interest in motorcycles began when a boyfriend of his sister had problems with his bike, which had broken down. Shand repaired it and was allowed to use it.
He failed an audition for the BBC because he kept time with his foot. At a time when gramophones were very much luxury items he made two records for the Regal Zonophone label in 1933. His career took off when he switched to making 78s for the Beltona label (1935–1940).[1] Most of the Beltona recordings were solo, but he experimented with small bands. This boosted sales. He appeared in a promo film shown in cinemas. While the image showed his fingers moving in a blur, Shand was disappointed to hear the sound track playing a slow air. He was prevented from joining the RAF by a digestive disorder, and spent the war years in the Fire Service. On New Year's Day morning in 1945 he made his first broadcast with "Jimmy Shand and his Band". This was the first of many such BBC radio and television appearances.
Soon after the war he became a full-time musician, and adopted a punishing life-style later adopted by rock bands. He would play Inverness one night, London the next night and still drive the van back to bed in Dundee. He took his trademark bald head, Buddy Holly spectacles and full kilted regalia, Scottish reels, jigs and strathspeys to Australia, New Zealand and North America, including Carnegie Hall in New York. Now on the EMI/ Parlophone label, he released one single per month in the mid 1950s, including his only top 20 hit in the UK Singles Chart – "The Bluebell Polka" (1955). It was produced by George Martin. He was awarded an MBE in 1962. This period is remembered affectionately by Richard Thompson, who played Shand tunes on his Henry the Human Fly and Strict Tempo! albums. Thompson's Scottish father had been a keen Shand collector. In 1991, Thompson paid tribute to Shand with an original song, "Don't Sit on My Jimmy Shands", from his 1991 album Rumor and Sigh.
In 1972, Shand went into semi-retirement. From then he played only small venues in out-of-the-way places for a reduced fee. He was made a freeman of Auchtermuchty in 1974, North East Fife in 1980 and Fife in 1998. He became Sir Jimmy Shand in 1999. His portrait is in the Scottish National Gallery, close to Niel Gow. In 1983, he released a retrospective album with the cheeky title The First 50 Years. At the age of 88, he recorded an album and video with his son, Dancing with the Shands.
More than 330 compositions are credited to Jimmy Shand. He recorded more tracks than the Beatles and Elvis Presley combined. In 1985, British Rail named a locomotive Jimmy Shand. He was dissatisfied with the chromatic button-key accordions available on the market in the 1940s so he designed his own one. The Hohner company manufactured the "Shand Morino" until the 1970s. He is the only artist worldwide to have his name used by the Hohner company as a model name for a musical instrument. There is a biography The Jimmy Shand Story: The King of Scottish Dance Music by Ian Cameron (2001). A number of his older recordings have been re-released by Beltona Records.

I shot this this morning on the way to work, handheld, with my Casio P&S. I suppose this is about as close as I will get to a signature image for this last phase of my life in photography. Some of you might expect me to flood it though, heh.
It was chilly this morning. The sharp refraction of the surrounding grass is enhanced by frosted tips. The image you see in the dew drop is NOT a reflection. The light is passing through from behind. As my friend jacq is fond of saying, the dew drop is acting like a wide-angle lens.

I'm really just putting this up to see what you think. I'm trying out a couple of new ways of doing signatures. The first style I've been an admirer of for quite a while and that is the farbspiel style, which is the one that is embedded into the lower front corner of the building. It is scaled and distorted to look as if it is actually part of the scene. This is my first attempt and it really suits architectural type shots which is maybe where I'll use it in future. It isn't so suitable for wide sweeping natural landscapes. So for those, which after all are my main stock in trade, I came across another style recently that I liked and that is the verdantvista style, which is very faint and with the characters spread out (I used it on my previous shot too). I was immediately taken with it when I first saw it a couple of weeks ago and I think I might move towards using this style. I think it is slightly less intrusive than what I was using and it also is more embedded into the centre of the shot and I think less easily cloned out. Although on this shot it could obviouisly be easily cloned out.
Thanks farbspiel for the tutorial.

PERSONAL FUN FACT written by my sister: Amazon deserves a Kudos for how hard they campaigned to sell me this doll. One of the advantages of having a smartphone is that one can check his or her emails during mundane activities, such as going to the bathroom or waiting for a school bus. I became aware of this phenomenon and, over the summer, learned to toggle easily between my personal and professional emails. I wouldn't say I receive much correspondence from friends in my personal email--I only really email two of my friends on a regular basis. But, I receive a LOT of correspondence from Amazon--for all intents and purposes, Amazon and I are internet friends. Anyway, shortly after we discovered the wonders of Cave Club, Amazon began soliciting me (which isn't what real "friends" are supposed to do) to buy more Cave Club. Shortly after this started (at the VERY beginning of 2021) , I noticed that the majority of Amazon's lovely emails were trying to sell me Bashley. "Why is Amazon trying so hard to sell me Bashley?" I would say to Shelly, upon opening yet another Amazon/Bashley email. "Why always Bashley?" Don't get me wrong--the minute we opened our first Fernessa and Slate dolls, I think we decided we "needed" EVERYTHING Cave Club. However, prior to all the solicitation, Bashley was not on my radar as much as some of the others. After a while, I started thinking about how cute her name is and how funny it is that she's sold with a little guitar. I fell for her little face--which Shelly rightly says is reminiscent of Rocker Barbie! That smile is so sweet and sincere. I grew to love her purple locks . I knew we'd wind up with Bashley eventually. Actually, I thought she was more widely distributed than she was at the time. She and the "Signature" Rockelle weren't at our Walmart when the other Cave Club "Signature" releases were, but we just assumed: 1) Our Walmart misses a lot of cool stuff 2) They came out later than the other characters, so they might hit shelves around here later.
At the beginning of April 2021, we became aware of several new Cave Club items that had hazy release dates and were hard to find pictures of. This reminded us both of when the Moxie Girlz line trickled to a halt--the latest dolls being sold only abroad and on select websites. This caused what started as cheerful Cave Club gluttony to become frenzied Cave Club panic buying. Shelly was majorly concerned about the Cavetastic Sleepover dolls and I was really worried about Ruly and Lumina. As she kept trying to find the unobtainable sleepover characters, I kept pushing the obtainable Amazon dolls. Shelly thought a couple weeks might not make a difference, I pestered her until we decided to buy Cavetastic Sleepover Emberly (the only Cavetastic doll who was easy to get), Lumina, Ruly, and the Dino Nursery Adventure Rockelle. Then, we both had the same thought, "Should we just buy Bashley too?" "Yeah...I mean, she never hit our Walmart, even when Rockelle did." "Yeah, and you can't buy her on their website either..." Amazon's campaign to sell us Bashley won out at last! We spent most of my April vacation fretting about whether or not our Cave Club friends would arrive safely. Even though Bashley seemed the least likely to somehow not arrive (as I said, "Why would they try so hard to sell me something that wasn't in stock?"), she was no less appreciated than her friends. She is ten times cuter in person than she is in stock photos--and that's saying something!
Our Bashley came in a cardboard box without cellophane and was also labeled as "Mattel Canada." So were all the other Cave Club people in the assortment--including Rockelle and Emberly, who were in otherwise normal boxes. It seems our neighbors to the north are either getting earlier access to Cave Club or BETTER access to Cave Club than we are. At time of writing, whether or not our little friends become more obtainable in the states remains to be seen. I'd like to note that, while we did a Cave Club panic buying binge, it made sense (to us) because the dolls are so affordable to begin with--Rockelle being the most "expensive" because she's just so deluxe--that it didn't make sense to see if they became more widely available later and risk going through what we did with Moxie Girls Knitting Fun. Even Bashley, who I wrote off as "easy to find" in the beginning, wasn't widely stocked when we cracked down and purchased her.
I'm really glad we bought her--that sweet face and purple tresses. You can't go wrong! I noticed that someone had a picture of her compared to Ghouls Rule Clawdeen and, I must say, the resemblance is uncanny. Bashley will be groovin' and jammin' here with her crew for years to come. She's a little darling who wormed her way into our hearts.

One of the reasons my son invited me to visit him in New York on that particular weekend was that there would be a special exhibit on the Protestant Reformation, at the Morgan Library and Museum, in Manhattan. He knew I'd be interested! It was a rare time that certain items would be displayed outside of Europe.
