A focus of my last two weekend trips to the Speedway was "tying up some loose ends" of locations that I had neglected or just wasn't happy with previous efforts. One of which was the famous Switch Tender in downtown Jackson, which somehow I had zero shots of a KCS train at even for as many trips to the area that had been made over the last 5 years. That was likely due to being one of the few places that works for eastbounds in the afternoon, and my usual plans would involve following westbounds over towards Vicksburg and Louisiana after lunch.

Anyway, to rectify that with about a month to go before the official takeover M-SHNS rolls through town on the half-mile of trackage rights over CN's former IC mainline to New Orleans. Of course in the background to the right is the famous Art Deco Standard Life building, now being renovated into loft apartments.

ENGLISH

The Pisa Baptistery of St. John is a Roman Catholic ecclesiastical building in Pisa, Italy, it is the largest one in Italy. Construction started in 1152 to replace an older baptistery, and when it was completed in 1363, it became the second building, in chronological order, in the Piazza dei Miracoli, near the Duomo di Pisa and the cathedral's free-standing campanile, the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. The baptistery was designed by Diotisalvi, whose signature can be read on two pillars inside the building, with the date 1153.

Constructed on the same unstable sand as the tower and cathedral, the Baptistery leans 0.6 degrees toward the cathedral. Originally the shape of the Baptistery, according to the project by Diotisalvi, was different. It was perhaps similar to the church of Holy Sepulchre in Pisa, with its pyramidal roof. After the death of the architect, Nicola Pisano continued the work, changing the style to the more modern Gothic one. Also an external roof was added giving the shape of a cupola. As a side effect of the two roofs, the pyramidal inner one and the domed external one, the interior is acoustically perfect, making of that space a resonating chamber.

The exterior of the dome is clad with lead sheets on its east side (facing the cathedral) and red tiles on its west side (facing the sea), giving a half grey and half red appearance from the south

El Baptisterio de Pisa, dedicado a San Juan el Bautista, está frente a la catedral en el extremo occidental de la Piazza dei Miracoli. Es el mayor de Italia y el baptisterio independiente más reconocido del mundo.

El redondo edificio románico comenzó a construirse en 1152, en sustitución de un antiguo baptisterio más pequeño que estaba situado donde se ubica el camposanto, y se concluyó en 1363. Se inauguró en el mes de agosto según lo que reza la inscripción: MCLIII Mense August fundata fuit haec («En el mes de agosto de 1153 fue aquí fundada...»

Fue el segundo edificio de la plaza en erigirse después de la catedral y antes de la torre. Se construyó en estilo románico por un arquitecto conocido como Deustesalvet («Diostesalve»), quien trabajó también en la iglesia del Santo Sepulcro en la ciudad. Su nombre está mencionado en un pilar interior, como Diotosalvi magister. La construcción, sin embargo, no terminó hasta el siglo XIV, cuando la loggia, la planta superior y la cúpula fueron añadidos en estilo gótico por Nicola y Giovanni Pisano y Cellino di Nese.

I sat in my car and looked at the little gift shop. This was the first time in all the years that I have been coming here, that I have seen it open. Of course, I usually stop here in the middle of the night, so it's no wonder. I thought, I really don't need to buy anything, and I almost pulled out of the lot... and then that old familiar tug at my heart saying, "go in... there might be something wonderful in there!" So, I listened to my heart. When I walked through the door, directly in front of me, one of the first thing I noticed, was photographs, beautiful matted photographs. They reeled me in because I always need to see what other people see... do they see things the way that I do.... what do they see that I am missing? The beautiful photos seemed familiar to me... like I had seen them before. I looked at the signature. I knew that name! I smiled. This person that I "knew" from my Flickr pages, had her photos for sale, in my favorite place! How fabulous! When I left the little gift shop... I pulled out my phone and left a quick comment on her Flickr page. To my surprise, I quickly had a response to my comment telling me that she lived right around the corner and asking how could she get in touch with me? Being technologically challenged, I couldn't figure out a way to Flickr mail her my phone number, so I just threw it out there on her page and within minutes we were in contact and a few minutes later we had plans! Dinner and a night sky shoot... in my very favorite place! What could possibly be better?!!

For my birthday weekend... I followed my heart to a place that I love, to do what I love to do. And there... the Universe gave me a wonderful birthday gift... a new friend, with whom I spent a perfect evening.... eating pizza, shooting the sunset, talking about things we love, shooting the night sky and making new plans. And I know we will do it again!! Thank you, Universe!! Thank you Joan for a really fun night! ♥

Oh....and one last fun thought.... remember synchronicities?... those fun little unexplainable coincidences? Earlier this day I walked along the edge of a beach, not the water edge, but near wooded edge... and I happened to notice a little path through the woods... I wondered where it led. Later, I found that.... it leads to Joan's house! We are all connected in ways... sometimes by words on a Flickr page.... sometimes by paths in places you've never been. How cool is that....? : )

Another 12+ hour trip is in the books. With no time left to work. a yard crew is on the way to relieve us. It appears that they are in no rush, as it has been a 30 minute delay already.

While waiting, I stand on the front platform of my locomotive and reflect on this beautiful view in front of me. It is by no means a perfect shot; no tripod and soft focus. But this skyline has always inspired me.

Take tonight for example. It has been a long day and I am tired. A nice warm shower and a bed sound so appealing. But as I take in this awesome sight, I feel rejuvenated. This skyline has brought me back so many times.

Railroading can be a tough life. No matter how hard you try, no matter how much you plan, working 12 hours over night is difficult.

Ask any fellow rail rider, the tale is the same. Been up all day. Have errands to run, appointments to keep, grass to cut.

Just when nap time approaches in the late afternoon, something else pops up. Volleyball game for daughter, basketball practice for the son, dinner with the neighbors.

Marking off isn't an option. Bills never stop coming in. Costs keep going up. Missing a round-trip isn't financially feasible tonight. Can't do it.

So with no chance for rest earlier in the day, you slide into the sheets hoping to get a few hours. Before you know it, the phone rings. Not for the hotshot intermodal train you had hoped for either, but a dog. The train no one wants.

After working hundreds of these all-nighters, good train or bad, every trip to Chicago has eventually ended at this signature skyline. I have witnessed it draped in fog, silhouetted by storm clouds, against sunrises and sunsets, you name it.

Nothing, and I emphasize nothing, is more dramatic than this cityscape at night under clear skies. Building lights twinkle, antennas glow and flash. And from this distance, it is so eerily quiet. The view is mesmerizing.

In 22 months, I will have 30 years behind the throttle. That magic number, 360 months. It allows membership into the elite fraternity of the coveted RRB.

From there, I have a few years to hang around until I reach age 60. At that day in 2026, I will pass my seniority on to the next junior engineer.

Embrace a new chapter in my life I will. As for the skyline, I will miss it immensely! It has never gotten old.

This is my first attempt with infrared and sea. It gives an effect similar to the 10 stops ND, plus some nice tonal shifts if you include greens, such as I did in this one.

- Added a slight vignette

- Sharpening (Smart Sharpen + more accurate)

- Framing and signature.
