Snow and ice hold on to the black shield of the warning light at Townline Road in North Lake as MPRSS blows the whistle to anounce its presents.
You don't see signals such as this one any more! In fact I don't even know where there is a working one anywhere now.
Note the old time crossbuck to the right. Those can still be seen occasionally but usually in rural settings.
What I'd like to see again is what was known as the "wig wag" signal!
Signal at Buckfastleigh station on the South Devon Railway. We didn't take the train to Totnes this time but we will be going back at some point. You can just make out one of my favourite classes in the background, a 37.

Terracotta Warriors and Horses -
After just one photograph, I walked away and this dingy fly taught me a lesson when I reached home. I should have taken a second shot and not dismissed him lightly, drab looking flies have the potential to become interesting subjects too. The fly appeared so quaint and ancient in the picture, he emanates a brooding mood from within. To me, this is about an ex-warrior from the Terracotta Army; spending his twilight years in the region of the forest where the sun would not shine.

Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex
Fort Irwin, California
Goldstone is one of three complexes around the world known as the Deep Space Network (DSN) established to provide the ability to communicate with spacecraft; not only in orbit around the earth, but also in the farther reaches of our solar system. The Deep Space Network complexes, placed 120° apart, provide constant communication with spacecraft as the Earth rotates. In determining the exact position for the site in California, a remote location, free from radio signal interference, was needed. The remote location of the Mojave Desert in California, near the old mining town of Goldstone, was determined to be an optimal location and in 1958 the first antenna was built. Facilities near Madrid, Spain and Canberra, Australia complete the Deep Space Network providing 360 degree coverage for spacecraft tracking.

Brutalist signal box at New Street Station, Birmingham; Bicknell and Hamilton.
Taken with Panasonic 20mm f1.7 lens on Panasonic G1.
The signal is set at stop – and has been for some years now, since the tracks were lifted on the old March to Spalding railway. The signal post and two crossing-keepers cottage remain though, and the track bed has been made into a pedestrian and cycle path.
Behind the signal was the level crossing over the Twenty Foot Road, and river, before the line entered the north end of the once vast Whitemoor marshalling yard, where freight trains were made up and queued to be sent to wherever they were going. Countless thousnads of tons of coal came through here in the lifetime of the Whitemoor Yard.
