I apologize for not participating in the Re-Inspired Thursday's group yesterday. I ended up having a rather chaotic morning. Thanks for your understanding.

Los Angeles has given me some actual weather to work with lately, and I am grateful. First rain, now wind. I love this winter and wish it would go on like this for a long time.

During my son's baseball practice yesterday, I had an impromptu photo session with some of his teammates siblings in the full sun, just behind the ball field. As a natural light shooter, full sun is not typically in my comfort zone, but was fun to be spontaneous and to make the most with the outfits the kids were wearing and the possibilities and limits of the location.

Here's some old and new things I want to say for selfish marketing purposes:

1. *UPDATE* I have another new notebook on sale now: Click here to see! This one is a large grid notebook with two images taken from the National Gallery of Art. 3 notebooks in total and more designs to come!

2. Subscribe to my Mailing List if you would like to get updates about random stuff.

3. If you've been a fan of my nonsensical view of the world and want to support me but tight on money, if you could leave a testimonial on my website that would help me so much. With enough eye witness reports, it just might give enough evidence for the State to finally put me in the psychiatric ward.

Leave a Testimonial

4. I'm also selling fridge magnets of ANY image from my flickr or instagram accounts. Just copy and paste the URL link of the photo you want magnetized at the checkout. If you want a random image, just type 'random'

First 3 people get 15% off. Discount Code: fridge15

Click link to order: fridgeopen.gumroad.com/l/fridgemagnet

5. Join my Flickr group and add any of your photos to Muggle Mingle

6. Build your first website using Smugmug.com and save 20% on your first year by clicking here

We went out this weekend to explore. After it stopped raining, my daughter took off her rain slicker and began running from puddle to puddle, screaming "One, Two, Three - GO!" and giggling.

Some days are just kind of special and I get inspired.

I had JUST finished another portrait when my middle son burst into my office, saying I needed to go to the door. I was annoyed. I did not want to go to the door. I knew someone was going to try to sell me something. I wanted to keep working. I tried to get him to go to my husband, but instead, a few minutes later, he came back to me. He insisted I meet with the woman at the door and I relented.

When I got there, I had already firmly turned my face into the "I'm not interested" mask. It's always a struggle for me though -- I once had a job where I sold door to door so I know it's brutal. I try not to be a jerk. She began her sales pitch and I just looked at her. She has this GREAT look! No makeup, no fancy wardrobe, just this glowing beauty. Then, as you already know if you know me in real life, I radically changed the subject on her. I basically interrupted her and said, "What is the price of the thing you want to sell me? How about we trade? I'll buy it if you sit for 10 minutes and let me take some portraits of you". She agreed. I now have a 14 month supply of a concentrated cleaner.

I still had my area next to my window set up from my last shoot (and if we're being honest, it will still be there until January) and I shot about 20 images of her. I mean some weird lady asks you to sit in her house and take pics... yet she was so comfortable and fantastic with direction. A natural.

We're now FB friends and so I wanted to edit at least one for her, I'll work on another one or two when I can over the next few weeks. She is interested in writing and modeling and hopefully we can work together again soon.

Wall Holm Island and the Steamer - Ullswater, Lake District, Cumbria

This is another shot of Wall Holm Island from the other weekend. As I was stood there having been snapping away, ready to pack up, I could hear the sound of the famous steamer in the background and decided to wait for it to come in to shot. I decided not to use a fast shutter speed in order to maintain some motion with the Steamer.

CC Welcome and please feel free to share if you like.

As always, all my images are available to purchase through my website so why not pop along there and take a look.

I was invited recently to go backpacking in the North Cascades to a somewhat remote area that I had never visited before. It was an almost 5 hour drive from Seattle and it was supposed to be a short, although steep hike up to this lake.

I had a small suspicion that this wasn’t gonna be an easy hike, but after paying close attention to the elevation per mile, I knew this was gonna be a little beyond my comfort zone and most definitely beyond my current fitness level, particularly because I had to carry added weight for camera gear, camping gear, food, water, etc.

According to my book “Day Hiking North Cascades”, this is a 3.3 mile, almost 3,000 feet elevation gain. However, according to my gps, it was 4.4 miles instead. Right from the trailhead the climbing starts in earnest. A little before the half way point, you reach an abandoned mine shaft. At this point I was huffing and puffing and at times it felt my heart and lungs were gonna explode right out of my chest. After all, it had been nothing but uphill in a pretty steep ascent.

But after this point, the trail became narrower and even steeper!

More huffing and puffing. More F this, F that. Take 50 steps and rest for a few seconds. Rinse and repeat ad nauseum until eventually the valley below became visible and an incredible sight to behold that’s for sure. At this point the trail leveled off, although still climbing. Then another steep ascent of about 150 ft. More F this, F that. More huffing and puffing! But I knew I was getting closer because I could feel and smell the humidity from the lake and I could hear the lake runoff on a nearby creek.

I crossed the creek and I could almost feel it. “I am almost there!” I was thinking. And then, bam!!! A really steep ascent on a scree that I remembered from the description on my book. 200ft. elevation gain. Even though I was feeling pretty exhausted, I figured that I had been walking uphill for almost three hours. So, what’s another 200ft. elevation and a 1/4 mile, right?

Once I reached the top, then was a final 250ft. descent into the lake basin and the incredible reward of the sight in front of me: The amazing 8000 feet Isabella Ridge and a deep blue alpine lake.

As for the shot itself: this is a perspective blend of three shots stitched vertically to accommodate the field of view. Even with a 14mm lens, I couldn’t fit everything.

This rather tumbledown construction is what meet the guest who wants to travel the short distance from Huk to Oslo by boat.

About:

In the summertime, Huk is a very busy place. In the wintertime the place is still an attractive place for a nice walk, but you can forget the boat to Oslo.

Dyna Fyr is located in the middle of the Oslo Fjord. It is barely visible in the distant background :) It used to be a lighthouse leading ships into Oslo. Now Dyna Fyr is a small and very nice restaurant.
