One of my goals on this trip was a sunrise from Hopi Point. I got here early. I caught this moon set.

I took a little winter trip to the South Rim. Hardly any crowds at this time of year. Temperatures in the upper 20's during the day, mid teens at night with windchills into the single digits. I am well prepared for these temperatures and was comfortable most of the time. I stayed at the El Tovar Lodge.

This viewpoint offers panoramic and breathtaking views of the canyon along the scenic Hermit Road. An ideal location for sunrise or sunset, Hopi Point also offers five views of the Colorado River. Vault toilets available.

Stop number four along the west rim shuttlebus (the red route) is Hopi Point, the northernmost spot on this part of the south rim, and the first point where much more of the western Grand Canyon comes into full perspective - another 20 miles, since the Colorado begins a big bend northwards, allowing views all the way to Havasupai Point and the Great Scenic Divide. Hopi Point has a fenced viewing area next to the road, and a vista over the canyon centered on Dana Butte, a flat mesa 2,000 feet below the overlook. Salt Creek runs to one side, meeting the Colorado at a series of rapids, while Monument Creek is on the other side, joining the river at another set (Granite Rapids).

Opposite Hopi Point on the North Rim are a group of prominent mesas either side of Trinity Creek, named after figures from ancient Egypt - largest are Isis Temple, Horus Temple and Osiris Temple. Like many other Grand Canyon features their names were assigned by writer and geologist Clarence Dutton in the 1880s.

Because of the wide-ranging, unobstructed views, Hopi is the most popular place on the west rim for watching the sun set.

Zion National Park is located in southwestern Utah near the town of Springdale. A prominent feature of the 229-square-mile (590 km2) park is Zion Canyon, which is 15 miles (24 km) long and up to 2,640 ft (800 m) deep. The canyon walls are reddish and tan-colored Navajo Sandstone eroded by the North Fork of the Virgin River. The lowest point in the park is 3,666 ft (1,117 m) at Coalpits Wash and the highest peak is 8,726 ft (2,660 m) at Horse Ranch Mountain. Located at the junction of the Colorado Plateau, Great Basin, and Mojave Desert regions, the park has a unique geography and a variety of life zones that allow for unusual plant and animal diversity. Numerous plant species as well as 289 species of birds, 75 mammals (including 19 species of bats), and 32 reptiles inhabit the park's four life zones: desert, riparian, woodland, and coniferous forest. Zion National Park includes mountains, canyons, buttes, mesas, monoliths, rivers, slot canyons, and natural arches.

Union Station is Denver's historic train station at 17th and Wynkoop in the LoDo district. The station first opened in 1881. After the original structure was destroyed by fire in 1894 it was rebuilt in Beaux-Arts style. During its heyday, it was served by 80 daily trains operated by six different railroads. Today it still serves passenger traffic, including:

* Amtrak's California Zephyr

* C Line and E Line light rail routes.

It used to serve Winter Park during ski season and was a great way to beat the traffic and the elements to get up to the slopes.

They shut it down because of serious challenges including, escalating costs - particularly liability coverage; operational conflicts with freight train traffic, substantial uncertainties posed by redevelopment of Denver's Union Station; as well as long-term impacts resulting from this nation's economic crisis.

Another part of my past -- gone.

It's still a very cool bulding at night. And Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies, is just a few blocks north.

On this particular night, you could hear the cheers from the stadium as the Rockies pounded the Angels.

Buses will leave from opposite Newcastle Central Station (Bewick Street stop), St Andrew’s Church on Newgate Street (for Monument Metro Station and Eldon Square Bus Station) and Barras Bridge (for Haymarket Metro & Bus Station) and then run non-stop via the A69 to Close House. The first bus on each day will be at 6.30am and there will be regular departures until 11am, with buses returning from Close House from 2pm until 6.30pm on each day. Happy Hump Day!

TGI Wednesday ... that's for sure. :-)

In Denali NP, one of our favorite things to photograph in the fall is the bull moose. This is the time that they begin to congregate in groups and the males begin to lose their velvet in preparation of the rut season. Usually the fall colors begin to be in full bloom and in years past, it seemed that you almost needed sunglasses, as the colors were so vivid and bright. This year however, possibly due to the odd weather patterns that beset Alaska last winter, caused the colors to be not as bright. Though for someone coming from south Florida, where we don't get color changes, it was still beautiful.

For some reason as well, though the bull and cow moose were present in numbers, there didn't seem to be as many. Not really sure why.

This particular bull moose made itself known to us and seemed ready to go ... following the females, velvet shed, and at times hanging with the other bulls. We wished that we could actually witness the action of the rut, but of course, that wouldn't be for another several weeks to a month. Still it's quite a thrill to see these big guys in person and imagine what it would be like when the real action begins. :-)

Thanks for stopping by to view and for sharing your thoughts and comments.
