Am 7. September 2014 war der ATB mit seinen historischen Bussen als Verstärkerbussen auf den Omnibuslinien „M45“ (zum „Tag der offenen Tür“ der Polizeidirektion 2) und „134“ (zum Flugplatzfest des Militärhistorischen Museums der Bundeswehr) als Autobuslinien „54 E“ bzw. „34 E“ geschildert unterwegs und hatte zusätzlich den Shuttleverkehr vom DTMB zur Depothalle des DTMB zu erbringen. Auf der letzten Linie war diesmal „Hugo“ des DVN im Einsatz.
Nadat de trein eenmaal een verwachtte aankomsttijd had heb ik nog wel wat geslapen, maar het was zeker geen complete nacht. Na een douche en wat inpakken loop in voor ontbijt naar de 'Country Waffles'. Ontbijt is oké, maar niet echt bijzonder. Via de supermarkt om etensvoorraad voor het komende stuk lopen compleet te maken; dat had ik in Bend willen doen, maar ik heb nu tijd en in Bend mogelijk niet..
Om half elf ben ik op het station, vijf voor elf vertrekt de trein. Ruime zitplaatsen, helaas geen WiFi maar wel oplaadpunten. Muziekje luisteren, wat lezen, omgeving bekijken, fototjes voorbereiden; ik vermaak me wel.
Het is een mooie treinroute, bekend als de 'Coastal Starlight Train', de complete route loopt van Los Angeles naar Seattle. Zeker het eerste stuk vanaf Redding veel rook, waardoor er weinig van de uitzichten overblijft; alles is ook wat oranje getint, al zal dat ook deels door de wat vergeelde ramen van de trein komen, niet het nieuwste materieel. Al vrij snel na Redding gaat de route langs het 'Shasta Lake', om daarna lang de 'Sacramento river' te volgen die steeds smaller wordt naarmate de trein noordelijker komt.
Het is wat voor drie uur als de trein California verlaat en de grens met Oregon passeert. De omgeving is inmiddels wel duidelijk anders; vlakker (maar nog wel met voldoende bergen op de achtergrond), veel grasland met her en der loofbomen.
Kort daarna gaat de route langs het 'Upper Klamath Lake', om daarna op een afstand (uit het zicht) het 'Crater Lake' te passeren; daar komt de PCT langs en het staat bekend als één van de hoogtepunten van Oregon, jammer dat ik het mis.. Troost is wel dat er door de rook op het moment niet al te veel van te zien is..
Om kwart voor vijf komt de trein aan in Chemult, het eindpunt van mijn treinrit. Vanaf hier ga ik met een aansluitende shuttlebus naar Bend; tegen vijf uur zijn we onderweg, rond half zeven aankomst in Bend, dan nog ongeveer een halve mile lopen tot het 'Bunk&Brew' hostel. Bij check-in hoort een rondleiding door het huis en een 'check-in beer', die bewaar ik even voor het avondeten, een calzone van de pizzeria om de hoek.
Met wat andere gasten (waarvan één PCT-loper) zit ik nog even buiten, dan toch wel optijd naar bed; was een vermoeiende reis.

On each of the shuttlebus to the bars/baths/shenanigans-locations, they had super-sweet hosts explaining the joys of San Francisco...or just being too cute to believe...I don't know which since I wasn't really doing anything other than watching him smile... ;o)
May 15, 2019 - "The project, known as Taliesin—Welsh for “shining brow”—consisted of a house with a living room, kitchen, three bedrooms, two bathrooms, sitting room, and garden; studio with a workroom and small apartment; and service wing with stalls for horses, a garage, space designated for carriages and cows, and a milk room. It was located close to other projects Wright designed for members of his family, including the Romeo and Juliet tower (1897); Hillside Home School (1902); and Tan-y-deri (1907), the house Wright built for his sister, Jane Porter.
Like the suburban Prairie-style residences of his early career, Taliesin featured hipped roofs, overhanging eaves, broad chimneys, an open floor plan, and bands of casement windows. The rolling topography of Southern Wisconsin allowed Wright to expand upon his earlier experiments linking site and structure. Here Wright responded to the natural landscape by building Taliesin around a hill top. The architect wrote, “I knew well that no house should ever be on a hill or on anything. It should be of the hill. Belonging to it. Hill and home should live together each the happier for the other.” Indeed, Taliesin was situated to create picturesque views of distant hills and valleys, as well as nearby landscaped gardens. The multiple facets of its hipped roofs appear to follow the contours of the landscape, and Wright chose to build with limestone and other materials native to the area.
Taliesin’s living quarters were tragically destroyed when a disgruntled employee set fire to the property and killed Mamah Borthwick, her two children, and four others on August 15, 1914. Wright subsequently rebuilt the structure, and it was incorporated into a larger estate that is now open to the public." TTC 8321, a 2011 Orion VII NG, is seen waiting for passengers on the route 501 Queen replacement shuttle bus at the intersection of Queen St. E. and Yonge St. in downtown Toronto.
So that's our shuttle bus from our hotel in St. John's to Bay Bulls from where we took O'Briens Whale & Boat tours for our whale watching. After two trips in Canada, I was getting used to seeing buses built on truck chassis now. Very professional guides, O'Briens was a delight. Here is our bus by the harbour front at Bay Bulls. Pleasant place but for an oil installation coming up in the lovely bay. (Bay Bulls near St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, June 2015)
