Blencathra panorama.
Blencathra, as viewed from the road between Troutbeck and Wallthwaite.
The alternative name is 'Saddleback'. The Saddle is the depression between the mountain sumit and the top of Foule Crag, to the right.
Gategill Fell, Halls Fell, Doddick Fell and Scales Fell illuminated beautifully. The forshortened profile of Sharp Edge is seen to advantage here, with the slopes of Atkinson Pike in shadow.
The Coledale group of fells are seen in sillhouette here.
Sharp Edge - Blencathra.
The view looking towards Foule Crag, Blencathra, across the rocky arete of Sharp Edge.
An exhilerating rocky ridge. Straightforward in dry conditions, completely different in the wet!.
I've already posted a version of this image to Flickr.
I've re-scanned this image, 8 passes at 3600dpi.. Very satisfied with the end result. The scan has brought out the details in the rock beautifully.
If you view this image 'original' size, you will find eleven climbers on the ridge and on Foule Crag.
The original image was taken on a fellwalk in September 1996. The camera used was a Ricoh KR10-M SLR, using Fujichrome 200ASA slide film. Scanned using a Plustek 7400 slide scanner and post processed using Adobe Photoshop.
The Devil's Golf Course is a large salt pan in Death Valley National Park, with a rough surface formed of large salt crystals. It was named after a line in a 1934 National Park Service guide book to Death Valley, which stated that "only the devil could play golf" on its surface.
Sharp Edge - Blencathra.
The view from the outlet of Scales Tarn, the impressive serrated outline of Sharp Edge is viewed.
On closer inspection, five climbers can be seen traversing the ridge.
The photograph was taken during a fellwalk in the Summer of 1996, using a Ricoh KR10-M SLR, using Fuji 200ASA print film, post processed using Adobe Photoshop.

See rest in set.. Great day out on Blencathra in snow and hard ice on top!!
Sharp Edge - Blencathra.
A view looking from Foule Crag across 'The Bad Step', the 'Gendarme' and the arete of Sharp Edge, two climbers are to be seen enjoying the traverse of the ridge.
Certainly shorter than Crib Goch, the ridge is no less exposed. A fine route in good weather, in wet or icy conditions, this route is certaily far more demanding that it is given credit for. When wet, the rock is particularly slippery.
The original image was taken on a Ricoh KR-10M SLR using Fuji 'Fujichrome' 200 ASA colour slide film. Scanned using a Plustek 7400 slide scanner, 16x scans at 3600dpi and post processed using Adobe Photoshop. Although scanning the image 16 times may seem somewhat labourious (it took 30 minutes to complete), the final image, I feel, is worth it. The depth, detail and clarity really do justice to the original slide.
Somewhere soon after this, my desire to take photographs was overwhelmed by concern for my safety. I was amply rewarded in my concern by finding that I was still alive, drawing breath and free of pain or injury as I finally surmounted Foule Crag.
The Keswick Mountain Rescue Team maintain some interesting notes as regards Sharp Edge.

The view up to the start of Sharp Edge, a grade 1 scramble in the Lake District. It's a route that should only be attempted if you have a good head for heights.
Sharp Edge Panorama - Blencathra.
From the top of Doddick Fell, the impressive outline of Foule Crag and the profile of Sharp Edge.
Sharp Edge is the closest the Lake District has to the Crib Goch ridge in Snowdonia, though shorter in length.
Viewed 'Original Size', three climbers can be see traversing the 'Bad Step'.
Scales Tarn is the body of water seen here.
This feature is an excellent example of a Glacial Cirque.
Statue of the Vizier Nakhti, from Asyut, Dynasty XII.
Wooden statue of the Vizier, Nakhti, from Asyut, (Tomb 7) during the reign of Senwosret I.
Stylistically this standing figure of the vizier Nakhti with its highly elongated proportions, is typical of the period. He wears a calf-length kilt rendered in smooth planes meeting at sharpedges. The body and head are only flatly and sparingly modelled. A particular gesture distinguishes this figure from many other similar statues; Nakhti places his right hand in a fold of his kilt.
Painted Acacia wood with inlaid eyes.

DIY Chisels & Home made sharpening stones, Medium & fine grits mounted on 40x25 cm spanish tiles, Gives my woodworking chisels a very sharp cutting edge!
Blocks of sharp-edged broken rock line the bed of the river Jökulsá á Fjöllum near Detifoss Falls.
If you understand shadows
You will appreciate its silence
Its floating softness
Its fleeting forms
That tells a richer story
Than sharp edges
If you appreciates shadows
You will wait with patience
For it to reveal
The nature of its dances
That takes you dancing along
Through their illumination

Foule Crag & Scales Tarn from the outlet of Scales Tarn.
A five image panorama of the impressive crags of Foule Crag.
The serrated outline of Sharp Edge is to the right, the path from Blencathra sumit is just seen to the left here.
The panorama really does not illustrate the scale of the impressive rock surroundings here. However, I cannot think of a better place to enjoy a well earned lunch break!.
A very short downclimb into an exposed notch contsitutes the 'Bad Step' on Sharp Edge. There have been quite a few accidents here, as illustrated on the Keswick Mountain Rescue Team website, with people slipping from the 'Bad Step' down what they describe as 'Usual Gully'. The rock around here is highly polished and I could imagine it gets very slippery in the wet.
Sharp Edge in all it's glory, cold but in sunshine and for the most part dry. We hit the snow/ice line three quarters way up and trod/climbed more carefully..
It is a bit dangerous up there - www.keswickmrt.org.uk/rescues/sharp_edge.htm

08-03-10 Who schedules lectures for 9am on Monday morning? Huh? Seriously! Like anyone is going to learn something at that time. Pfft. Anyway on the way back from said lecture I was struck by the blue of the sky this morning. It was bright sunny and clear and COLD! I decided I would like to try and capture today's blue so I planned a "looking up at a bit of a building shot" as I quite like them. The thing was what building? I wandered back from uni through the Sheffield Winter Gardens and into the Peace Garden and there I noticed the Novatel, well the back end of it to be precise I noticed how its geometric shape was echoed in the new St Paul's development and I thought I might have my shot. I fired off a few frames and wandered home. The shots were ok but the buildings were a bit underexposed so I was in need of Photomatix! So this is a HDR, a single shot HDR which is a technique I have used quite often in the 365. Once I was happy with the tone mapping I reimported it into lightroom and boosted the blue saturation slightly to really make the sky stand out.

Images viewed: Check out the links in the main body of text for some great shots of Sheffield centre.
Other Inspiration: Whilst compiling this post I realised that I am lucky to live in such a picturesque city. Many people who have not been to Sheffield (including me earlier on in life) assume that as a former industrial town it must be a very grim place. Its not! Its really really nice.

A tantalising glimpse from outside the Sportsman's Inn (midway between Penrith and Keswick), which we were visiting for a family meal – this is as close as I got to the fells and the first lying snow of the year. Maybe next time....
The 845 m northern summit of Blencathra is just about concealed by cloud, but the dramatic Sharp Edge final ascent is visible beside Foule Crag. To the left, a hole in the cloud reveals the cliff below Hallsfell Top, Blencathra's 868m southern summit.
Below that is the flat north-eastern side of Scales Fell. Almost out of the cloud on the right of the image is Bannerdale Crags, reaching 683 m behind Souther Fell, itself a respectable 522 m asl.

Sharp Edge and Foule Crag - Blencathra.
Sharp Edge seen beautifully lit in this view looking towards Foule Crag.
Initially, the ridge looks deserted. View this image 'Large', ten climbers can be made out picking their way along the ridge, and scrambling up Foule Crag..
The rock chimney that aids upward progress on Foule Crag is well seen here. I seem to remember, the footholds and handholds in the chimney were pretty well worn and slick...
The ridge is an excellent scramble in good weather, a completely different proposition in bad weather.
The original image was taken on a Ricoh KR-10M SLR, using Fujichrome 200 ASA slide film.
The slide was given 4 scans at 7200dpi, and post processed using Adobe Photoshop.
