Sometimes we want soft photographs with gentle transitions. Today let's make images with sharp edges, clear contrasts, and perhaps a bit of a hard feeling

#tbt to exploring Blencathra with Matty aka mountain man and Rob for sunrise. Good to have Matty back on home soil, here's to another morning on the hills like this one!

ODC Our Daily Challenge: Sharp Edges

Just playing with basic forms and the distance between them.

Here you can see the finished tessellation "Roundabout", where I added the triangles.

Blencathra from Souther Fell.

It's mornings like this that make the 0230 alarm worth it. It was clear all the way but not long after setting up near the top of Sharp Edge, the low cloud started rolling in. Once the sun had risen the light and Scales Tarn would come and go, constantly changing the scene, just fantastic to watch, if a little cold!

Getting up so early also gave me the pleasure of having Blencathra all to myself, a bit like going on the rides at Alton Towers before the gates open!

This was taken from the top of Blencathra early May 2019. The sun rose and covered sharp edge in gorgeous pink light. Worth setting up camp the night before in a hail cloud, although I didn't know it at the time!

One of the Lake District's classic views! Before sunrise on Sharp Edge this morning, looking down to Scales Tarn and the misty Eden Valley in the distance. I don't usually like cloudless skies, but the atmosphere here was just perfect. Believe it or not, after 13 plus years of fell-walking and climbing every mountain more than once...this was actually my first ever ascent of this popular ridge. Wouldn't recommend this walk to vertigo-sufferers!

Many would argue that this is the English Lake District's most easily identifiable mountain.

Looking down to see the short but very narrow Sharp Edge ridge on Blencathra. Crossing the flat slab in the centre of the picture focuses the mind a bit, particularly when it is wet, windy or icy.

ODC -Sharp Edges

This is my little electric knife. It has extremely sharp edges and it cuts through things like butter.

Castlerigg perhaps the most atmospheric and dramatically sited of all British stone circles, with panoramic views and the mountains of Helvellyn and High Seat as a backdrop.

It is also among the earliest British circles, raised in about 3000 BC during the Neolithic period.

A stunning Christmas morning in the lakes offering fresh snow and crisp, winter sunshine. This is an image of Scales Tarn with Sharp Edge in the background. 5 verticals stitched together with a Heliopan Polarizer turning the tarn in to a deep, inky black. The idea is to make the whole place a little sinister.

The walk is a pleasant hour or so from the car, so perfect when lugging all that camera gear. You don't have to go up to the ridge, but worth it for the breath taking views. Crampons required at this time of year.

A wild thistle prepares its bloom beneath a crown of spines. Its defenses are sharp, but its geometry is elegant.

Fun fact: Thistles use their prickly armor not only to deter grazing animals but also to conserve moisture in dry conditions.

In the summer time when the weather is fine

You could stretch right up and touch the sky

Now when the weather is fine

You got women, you got women, on your mind

I´m going driving right now to see what I can find

Now if her daddy is rich take her out for a meal

But if her daddy is poor then do as you feel

Speeding down the lane even though the speed limit is twenty five

And when the sun goes down I´ll make it with my cutie pie -Shaggy-

Decided to head up Blencathra via Sharp Edge for a quiet Sunday camp. Not a soul in sight all night.

Yes, my photo has signature, watermark and registration stamp. I know, I have set intentionally.

This is part of a sculpture by Alexander Calder - Expo 67 entitled "Man" .

I isolated a very small portion of the sculpture, shot lying flat on my back and then I inverted the shot. The actual sculpture looks nothing like this photo, because of the angle and isolation from which I shot the photo from. It's actually a pretty big sculpture (estimating - possibly about 40-50 ft high and maybe 30-35 feet across).

Like I said, if you are familiar with this sculpture (and it is reasonably famous) you would almost Never guess it from this shot. Most photos of this giant sculpture looks almost nothing like this one - because it is such a weird perspective ... LOL !!! :-)

From the summit of Souther Fell. 522 Meters up with a hell of a long way to go - having said that, we de-toured a fair way off the beaten track to summit this fell which of course added a mile or two to the hike, and an extra hour or so, but well worth it. The view of 'saddleback' and 'sharp edge' is awesome, I think. This is my last 'Blencathra' shot. Tomorrow im back in the Lake District near Ambleside, hiking 'High Hartsop Dodd, Hartsop-above-How, Dove Crag, Little Hart Crag and Hart Crag.
