Mau, a male great white shark and regular visitor to Isla de Guadalupe, makes a left turn just below the water's surface, leaving a small trail of air bubbles in his wake just behind his dorsal fin.
You might notice some irregularity to front and pinnacle of his dorsal fin. This is the result of injury sustained many years ago. Injuries like Mau's are a good way to differentiate specific individual sharks. However, every great white shark also has unique features that allow them to be distinguished from other individuals. The counter-shading pattern (where the dark grey meets the white) is as unique to a white shark as a fingerprint is to a human. Additionally, the ridges/grooves on the rear of each shark's primary dorsal fin also create a unique identifier. Other markings such a birth marks can also help to identify an individual.
Researchers have been building a database of individuals documented at Guadalupe since 2001. To date over 180 individuals have been identified, since the project began, with new individuals being added each year.

We're getting excited for Shark Week here at our house, so we figured we'd set the tone with today's picture.

It's been awhile since I posted a photo of my favorite little buddy, I shot this one shortly after he got a new toy this morning.

And can you believe shark week is almost over!!! 1 more day!!!
I see on the Internets it’s #SharkWeek so here’s a contribution from Creve Coeur Lake.
The Mo. Dep’t of Conservation removed thousands of Asian carp last winter but you’d never know it in the early morning when scores of them are patrolling the shore. At least real sharks are a part of a natural ecosystem and don’t mess things up for native fish like the carp do in the Midwest. The only advantage is that bald eagles are big enough to handle them and I disturbed one near this spot this morning (though I didn’t have time to get a photo). Hope it tells its fellow eagles about the gourmet bounty. :-)
I forgot to upload this shark piece from my ill-fated 'CREATURES OF THE DEEP' art show.
There are still a lot of additional ones I need to scan in, but this one has been ready to go for a while now.
And it is currently available at my Etsy store.

Wow, I guess I'll keep this photo! I meant to delete it, but someone took it off my flickr and reblogged it all over tumblr with about 500 notes! Now if only you guys would do that with all my other photos. ;) This is an A Day To Remember shirt, just so you know. Limited edition for only a week on sale in 2009.

I didn’t intentionally set out to save this for Shark Week but here we are lol. Sadie loves this shark hand puppet from Walmart and she was playing around at the table and I had to snap this of her expression.
