Shark week on Discovery channel starts on August 12th… and I can’t wait. For geeks like me that love nature channels this is the ultimate week in nature programming!
"CHIditarod is Chicago's Epic Urban shopping cart race, charity food drive, costumed beauty pageant, talent show, fundraiser and chaos generator all in one. And probably the world's largest mobile food drive, benefitting the Greater Chicago Food Depository."
Another great year of racing and pageantry! The weather held out long enough for racers to complete their course - another heavy snow dumping was to come in a few short hours. I enjoyed walking the 10 miles to observe the craziness of the event. Here are a few pictures from the race. Pictures are posted here for the personal use of the contestants. Any commercial use is strictly forbidden without my prior consent. Enjoy!
I can only guess that this is Shark Week! Yeap, more Coors under the hood.

Week 15/52 -
*Hit "L" to make it big!*
Week 15 is all about the sharks. Unless you have been living on another planet or something, you have been glued to Shark Week on Discovery Channel. It is some intense watching. There are amazing shark attack stories, videography, photography, etc. Its just so well done and its a great educational tool.
I am not going to lecture people on what to do, but I do want everyone to be a little aware of what's happening. Shark's get a bad rap! They are some of the oldest living creatures on this planet. They are dinosaur's people! They have been in the ocean forever (their fingers must be pruney!) Anyway, sharks are becoming endangered. And not because they are wusses. No, its because of humans. We kill over 100 million sharks annually for shark fin soup. Let me repeat that - 100 million sharks for soup. Are you frigging kidding me? Soup. Next time you see shark fin soup on the menu, do me a favor, say something to the owner, manager, or chef and tell them how terrible this practice is and leave the restaurant. If that is the least you can do, that is at least something.
Again, I don't want this do be depressing or anything but something needs to be done to help save these incredible animals. You can read further on Discovery's website:

Oh and I am an avid ocean swimmer. I surf and swim in the ocean. It's not mine. It's the shark's territory; I understand that every time I go in there. You have a higher chance of being killed by vending machine than a shark attack! So just relax and enjoy nature!

After watching a few Shark Week episodes I wanted to get a funny shark shot but also tie in shark conservation. I spent about 20min. walking around in the toy section of Target at about 10:30pm the other night. There is just no love for the shark toys these days! But this little hammerhead pull-string swimming shark did the trick.
My buddy Adam, flic.kr/p/a2tj8T, helped me out with this shot. We were hanging out one day and I wanted to head down to the creek by my house. So went down along with my dog, Cali. We trudged through some prickers and bushes to get there but once we did it was really fun and Cali got all muddy and wet. We tried setting up "sharky" so he wouldn't fall over. Not easy with a 3" long toy in a moving creek. But we propped him up onto some rocks and I got down into the mud and fired off some shots. I wanted to get eye level with the shark for that "personal" factor! I also angled the camera a little bit for some more effect. The reflection really played well here as well. It was a pain setting it up, it literally took us about 30min. just to get "sharky" in the right spot, light, etc. But we did it.
Sharky wanted me to tell everyone this:
"I might get a bad rap, but I am a predator. I eat to live, just like you. But I am the king of the food chain, so just understand that. Don't swim in shark infested waters or else you might get your leg bit off! Other than that, you will be just fine. Enjoy the ocean and make sure to keep it clean. That's my crib!"
What a stand-up guy!
