Even at our most productive, it would take a miracle to accomplish three months of work in one day. At Rosman High School, one day each year has been set aside to deliver just that miracle during Senior Service Day.
On Tuesday, October 7th, the Rosman Class of 2015 and select faculty parked their Homecoming preparations – or shifted into high gear, depending on your perspective – and poured 540 hours of volunteer service into the community. While the first event in 2012 targeted the Town of Rosman, adding transportation has helped to widen the emphasis to include non-profits all over Transylvania County.
Senior Service Day was started at RHS as a senior project, according to Spanish teacher Julie Queen, “giving them the opportunity to give back to the community that has supported them on the road to graduation.”
Queen also teachers Character Education, which has often been a source of energy and organization for the day of service. With over 100 students participating, groups of students traveled to Bread of Life and Sharing House, and also got around Rosman to assist at Tiger Town Thrift Store, split wood for the elderly, and provide labor in and around Rosman Elementary.
Students make the event possible, as they have done every year. “The first year my Character Education students organized everything,” said Queen.
“They contacted businesses, wrote up lists of needs, surveyed students to ask where they wanted to work, found T-shirt sizes. Now, a lot of that groundwork is already laid, and this year my students will again track down permission slips, pass out T-shirts, organize tools and materials, and get groups assigned.”
While the volunteer service begins before Senior Service Day, Queen is also thrilled to see it continue as well. “The students really don't know what to expect, but are so proud when they can see a visible change because of the work they have done,” she said. “I'm especially proud of the students who continue to work after the day. For example: last year, the group did not finish painting Eastatoe Community Center. Two students went back that evening on their own and finished!”
In 2014, students from Character Education went back to The Haven to complete work they were unable to finish on October 7. As much as students have embraced the work, there is also a spirited core of RHS staff who make the day possible.
Chaperones included Sarah Shawver and Tracie Owen from the counseling office, Officer Greg Stroup, media specialist Rae Parker, English teacher Linda Peeples, and Officer Jeremy Queen. Teachers cover classes, cafeteria staff prepare lunches, and many give willingly to help make Senior Service Day possible.
The total commitment from Rosman High School has not gone unnoticed, and grant funding has helped to power the event forward. The project was started on a $2,000 Bright Ideas grant from Haywood Electric Cooperative, and continued on the strength of a $1,000 True Hero grant (truehero.org).
Grants have helped Senior Service Day to purchase tools and materials set aside just for the day, as well as paint, brushes, gloves, and other needed supplies. They also help to provide T-shirts for students to remember the occasion, hopefully motivating and encouraging them to adopt giving back through service as a lifelong habit.
Queen said, “As always, students received many compliments for their hard work and great manners.” With such a track record of helping students find rewarding and meaningful work, this Tiger tradition that may be here to stay.

November 10, 2013: After last week's concert in Columbia, I felt like a part of me I enjoyed was missing. And I think that part of me was my time in Wesley Foundation.
Today, I decided to attend a Methodist service instead of a Catholic Mass. I really felt the whole "Open hearts. Open minds. Open doors" theorem today. People greeted me. One gentleman told me to come on to dinner Wednesday and meet his wife.
In all my years attending Catholic Mass, the only people that ever really greeted me were my friends. No stranger ever spoke to me and tried to make me feel welcomed. Yet, in all my times attending a Methodist function, people have friendly to me.
I don't know if it's the culture of the people that hold faith in the denomination or not, but it is reflective of the denomination. I like to be with people that are friendly, rather than people that are snooty.
