25-september-2022

September was an extremely rainy month, the only (well) above average, from May 2021, that is the only rainy month in well over a year, but...

I am referring only to the Gulf of Trieste, Coastal Karst and part of Istra/Kvarner area, on others areas, at random, it rained a lot less.

The photo is taken from the Coastal Road towards Trieste City, which, beyond the Hapsburg/Miramare Castle, is obscured by the strong Thunderstorm, persisted there for hours and then temporarily moved towards me.

The "Costiera Triestina" is a total of 22km long of which 6km were under T-storms for (totally) over of 4 consecutive hours, always those 6km!

At my weather station, on the outskirts of Trieste and at the foot of the City's Karst Ridge, 356mm (or 356 liters per square meter) of rain fell in September 2022, that is almost 3 times the historical average.

In October the rain stopped immediately, while it should have just started according to the rainfall of this area which sees the months of October and November as the rainiest of the year, according to the historical series.

For some years now, historical averages have been just statistics with no real correspondence.

Today you can expect anything at any time of the year.

The City of New York, often called New York City or simply New York, is the most populous city in the United States. Located at the southern tip of the State of New York, the city is the center of the New York metropolitan area, one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world.

A global power city, New York City exerts a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. Home to the headquarters of the United Nations, New York is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world.

Situated on one of the world's largest natural harbors, New York City consists of five boroughs, each of which is a separate county of New York State. The five boroughs – Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, The Bronx, and Staten Island – were consolidated into a single city in 1898.

New York City traces its origin to its 1624 founding in Lower Manhattan as a trading post by colonists of the Dutch Republic and was named New Amsterdam in 1626. The city and its surroundings came under English control in 1664. New York served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790. It has been the country's largest city since 1790.

We spent a week in New York City in May, aiming to explore the city beyond Manhattan and enjoy vibrant moods of this never-sleeping megalopolis.

Walking is arguably the best way to explore the city, and combined with large subway system one may spend weeks still not having visited and seen everything.

When in Lower Manhattan, one cannot (and should not) avoid visiting Ground Zero and 9/11 Memorial - here, the touching National September 11 Memorial is shown in the picture.

Thai republican hashtag trends after constitution change delayed

Reuters - 25th September 2020

The hashtag #RepublicofThailand trended on Twitter in Thailand on Friday after parliament voted to push back the question of changing the constitution as protesters have demanded.

During more than two months of anti-government protests, some protest leaders have said they seek constitutional reforms to reduce the powers of King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s monarchy but that they were not seeking to abolish it.

The republican hashtag, in English rather than Thai, had been used in more than 730,000 Tweets and was the top trending hashtag in Thailand on Friday morning, according to Twitter.

The Royal Palace did not comment and has made no response to requests for comment on the protests or the demands for royal reform.

Government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri said he had not seen the hashtag and declined to comment on it but said Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha was listening to all sides on the issue of the constitution.

“There are those who want to amend the constitution and others who don’t,” he said.

Parliament, dominated by supporters of the government, voted on Thursday to delay making a decision on whether it will amend the constitution.

The decision angered protesters and opposition parliamentarians, who accused parliament of trying to buy time.

Protesters seek changes to a constitution they say was drafted to ensure Prayuth, a former junta leader, kept power after an election last year. They also want his departure. Prayuth says the election was fair.

The protests are the biggest challenge to the military and palace-dominated establishment since Prayuth took power in a 2014 coup.

The biggest protest drew tens of thousands of people at the weekend. They cheered calls for reforms to the monarchy, which were first aired in August, breaking a longstanding taboo on not criticising an institution that the constitution says must be held “in a position of revered worship”.

Some protesters say the constitution also gives too much power to the king, who paid a rare visit to Thailand on Thursday for ceremonies honouring his grandfather, Prince Mahidol Adulyadej.

The king has spent most of his time in Europe since taking the throne nearly four years ago.

Hundreds of royalists marched to parliament on Wednesday to oppose calls from the anti-government protesters for changes to the constitution.

Random Compositions during the month of September 2025

Few people who live in Ottawa realize that the level of the river which gives the city its name is highly regulated. Nearly 50 major dams and Hydro-Electric plants ensure the level of the river remains constant throughout the year. The Ottawa rises from its source in Lake Capimitchigama in the Laurentian Mountains and eventually empties into the Lake of Two Mountains and the St. Lawrence River at Montreal. Along the way it collects water from feeder rivers that span an area a little larger than the nation of Switzerland.

Prior to the building of this dam system, the Ottawa would swell in the spring and flood the low lying areas of the towns and cities along its path much as the Nile did in its past; indeed, even now in spring you'll often see sandbags appear in places like Britannia Village to hold out the potential flooding that ice jams can cause, even though Britannia Village is now an affluent suburb of the Ottawa metropolitan area.

This shot is taken in September looking down on the "lower" Ottawa river from the hydro-electric dam that spans the Ottawa upriver from the capital near Portage-Du-Fort in an area known as The Pontiac (and no, The Pontiac is not a car :-).

Of particular importance in the work of the brothers Pavel and Alexander Svedomsky are the paintings in the Cathedral of St. Vladimir in Kyiv. The cathedral was conceived as a temple-monument to Russian history, especially the history of Orthodoxy. For ten years, from 1886 to 1896, artists in Rome prepared sketches, in Kyiv they worked together with M.V. Nesterov, V.M. Vasnetsov, M.A. Vrubel, V.A. Kotarbinsky. Nesterov recalled that in those years Kyiv “became, as it were, the center of the artistic life of Russia,” and this work aroused keen interest among enlightened people. In the cathedral, Svedomsky painted the side - northern and southern - ships of the cathedral, Alexander helped him. The topics that were proposed to Svedomsky were historical, from the earthly life of Christ. Sketches and studies for paintings are in many collections, including the Perm Gallery, as well as in the Italian collection of E. Rebecca.
