This is not a rare orchid, but neither is it that common, at least, in this area. In the words of an early naturalist:
"We shall never forget the moment when our eyes first fell on its blossom in the lonely depths of a sphagnum bog. The feeling was irresistible that we had surprised some strange, sentient creature in its secret bower of moss; that it was alert and listening intently with pricked-up ears."

Chion-in (知恩院, Chion-in) in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, Japan is the headquarters of the Jōdo-shū (Pure Land Sect) founded by Hōnen (1133–1212), who proclaimed that sentient beings are reborn in Amida Buddha's Western Paradise (Pure Land) by reciting the nembutsu, Amida Buddha's name.
Numbers are significant in the Buddhist tradition. These three little statues were found in a garden at Lindisfarne, Tasmania. In Mahayana Buddhist philosophy “a bodhisattva is an ordinary person who takes up a course in his or her life that moves in the direction of Buddha. You and I, actually, anyone who directs their attention, their life, to practicing the way of life of a Buddha is a bodhisattva.” tricycle.org/magazine/what-bodhisattva/
In Buddhist philosophy (remember I am not talking about religion here, so this applies equally as well to non-Buddhists) all of life is interconnected. There is a “Buddha nature” (Buddha Dhatu) that pervades all existence. The English Christian theologian and poet John Donne (1572-1631) understood this as well when he wrote that, “No man is an island”. The way of interdependence is the way of compassion, of feeling for the needs of others, the way a true adult will feel, regardless of religion. So in a sense the desire to be a Bodhisattva is a way of growing up.
As Kosho Uchiyama defines it, “The life that flows through each of us and through everything around us is actually all connected. To say that, of course, means that who I really am cannot be separated from all the things that surround me. Or, to put it another way, all sentient beings have their existence and live within my life. So needless to say, that includes even the fate of all mankind—that, too, lies within me. Therefore, just how mankind might truly live out its life becomes what I aim at as my direction. This aiming or living while moving in a certain direction is what is meant by vow."
"In other words, it is the motivation for living that is different for a bodhisattva. Ordinary people live thinking only about their own personal, narrow circumstances connected with their desires. In contrast to that, a bodhisattva, though undeniably still an ordinary human being like everyone else, lives by vow. Because of that, the significance of his or her life is not the same. For us as bodhisattvas, all aspects of life, including the fate of humanity itself, live within us. It is with this in mind that we work to discover and manifest the most vital and alive posture that we can take in living out our life.” tricycle.org/magazine/what-bodhisattva/
It’s a wonderful outlook on life.

Somewhere in our universe, on a strange, insignificant planet, a foreboding, semi-translucent black monolith flickers like a ghost stuck between two worlds. In the distance, a looming planet, partially illuminated by a nearby star, takes on the sinister appearance of a crazed grin, as if anticipating what you are about to discover. Step a little closer to the monolith for a better look, and you realize it is not a solid piece of material, but rather, an eerie doorway, or portal, to another dimension--a galactic wonderland where reality is bizarre beyond your wildest imaginations. Incidentally, a sentient being crossing over the opposite way, from the other dimension to ours, thinks the exact same thing about our apparently "normal" universe.
Perhaps Life is much stranger than we thought...

Tom knew he was destined for greater things. He was fed up with his kitchen job, day in, day out scraping the ceramic hob whenever the stupid humans in the house had been unattentive (again) and something had boiled over. Something he knew would never happen to him. Didn't they know he was an intelligent, sentient being? In his dreams, he was a fully-fledged robot with superpowers, and a famous, Michelin star-decorated Chef. His robotic swiftness and razor-sharp mind would revolutionise how the world cooked and ate. But here he was, inside a kitchen drawer, waiting for the next "Great Boil-over". As he was about to work himself into a rage of indignity (while his drawer mates sighed, eyes rolling: "Oh no, not another tantrum, Tom, come on!"), he heard the distant voice of one of the humans, and then the drawer opened. "There you are! Great! Come on, I need your help with a photo assignment, it will be fun!" "Finally she recognises my true talents", Tom huffed more to himself. "Well, it's not as if you were doing the scraping job alone, right? Because behind every ceramic hob scraper is a human hand that leads it. Isn't it?", the human said. "No need to be so over-dramatic...", Tom grumbled. But inside, Tom was smiling.
I didn't expect this to be so straightforward. Usually, pareidolia just "happens" but it's difficult when I'm deliberately looking for it. So I rummaged through the kitchen shelves and drawers with little hope of finding something I hadn't already used for a pareidolia-themed photo before, such as the old phone (its underside resembled E.T. but it has long been discarded) or the toaster's crumb tray (that had a surprisingly happy smile). But then I found "him", the unfortunate ceramic hob scraper that (or rather: who) has an even nastier job than the crumb tray and the cutest surprised face. On its flipside, there is the "GS" logo (GS = "Geprüfte Sicherheit", "Tested Safety", a voluntary certification mark for technical equipment), the production number, and the manufacturer's logo which I first misread as "TOM" (wrong glasses) but says "TCM". So "Tom" it was.
To make Tom look more interesting than possible with just the bland steel tone and the hint of rust on the pretty well-used blade aka his "hair", I used my makeshift colour filters to jazz him up a little and enhance the robot look.
A first single test shot already looked nice but since an image like this works best with all-over sharpness, I did in-camera stacking (15 Raw files combined in Helicon Focus, method B, R 8, S4). Size info: Tom is 4,5 cm/1,77 inches at his widest.
HMM, Everyone!
Ever since a friend (you know who you are) described some plants in his photo as triffids I have viewed every tall, weed-like plant as some malevolent, sentient being. Case in point here. I will swear these winter-dead plants were trying to rip down that chainlink fence,
HFF!

“It’s Alive!!!”
Dr. Okabe's project originated in a dare: "How sour can you make a lemon through genetic modification?"
The result was a giant sentient lemon than complained endlessly about everything. Okabe thought it would be funny to send the lemon to the executive office. They were not amused and sent it to the kitchen.
On Friday, there was a suspiciously large container of free lemonade in the cafeteria. Coincidence?
Experiment: FAILED.

Kookaburras keep their legs tucked under their body. In this shot you can see his left leg is dislocated, or possibly broken. Hoppy is a dilemma for me; I could easily pick him up and take him to a vet, but I may not keep or own a wild bird. He will automatically become the responsibility of a wildlife protection agency whose policy is to put down injured wildlife, such as Hoppy. What should I do?
I can't imagine how Hoppy came to find me, and decide to trust me. Hunting and finding enough food in the wild cannot be easy for him. I can support and sustain him, and I don't want to see him put down. He is an intelligent, sentient creature who may live for 20 years. I want the best for him, while my heart is on my sleeve.

A sentient being (a cow) is one who perceives and responds to sensations of whatever kind—sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell and emotional responses.
And how dare we think differently.
I thought living on a farm would be so different to what it is. Turns out it is becoming one of the biggest challenges in my life.

Mind flayers, also known as illithids, and sometimes referred to as ghaik by the githyanki, were sadistic aberrations feared by sentient creatures on many worlds across the multiverse due to their powerful psionic abilities. From their twisted lairs deep in the Underdark, these alien entities sought to expand their dominion over all other lifeforms, controlling their minds to use them as obedient thralls. They consumed their victims' very personality by extracting and devouring their brains while they were still alive

Aquaman: (thinking) This seems a good spot. It should give enough distance for me to rally the aquatic life I want with me and warn the rest away before I reach the target.
They all consider him the "fish guy". Superman just said that this was 'his area' * because it involves the water. It's an unintentional marginalization by his friends, and Aquaman doesn't necessarily like it but here, at this moment as he plunges in, he smiles as they're right.
The water embraces him. His physiology immediately adjusts to accept the water rather than air into his lungs. And, though he can function in either environment quite well, this is what feels more natural.
Aquaman: (thinking) Good, the creatures are responding. I don't want any harmed. ... ... And, what's this? Several entities ahead. They are sentient. I can feel them telepathically. But they are rejecting my probe. Hostiles. Here we go.

“We do not have to be ashamed of what we are. As sentient beings we have wonderful backgrounds. These backgrounds may not be particularly enlightened or peaceful or intelligent. Nevertheless, we have soil good enough to cultivate; we can plant anything in it.”

When the Holy Spirit visits
Everything is aflame before your eyes
The bushes still burn
Like they did for Moses
But are not reduced to ash
For they are afire with glory
Of a quite different kind
All of nature is exalted
And it is as if your feet
Do not touch the ground
The air is the song
And you are one of the notes
The sound is transcendent
An unknown melody
That you want to hear all your life
There is no separate self
You have become pure energy
Part of the covenant of creation
That each of us brings to the story
Of a Genesis reborn and alight
*****
There are times when a hush descends with the evening, and you become aware that you are part of a much larger creation, that is infinite. This can have the effect of making us feel incredibly small and vulnerable, or utterly exalted that we have the potential to join with this essence of primal nature. Either way, the experience of both of these emotions proves that our sentient being is responding to a greater force, and if we are wise we must treat this with the respect the creative drive that brought us into existence deserves.

"It is not love that should be depicted as blind, but self-love."
Voltaire
"As brilliant as it is terse, what Voltaire’s quote reveals is his awareness of how narcissists’ self-delusions of superiority prevent them from seeing themselves as they are. As already indicated, they’re blinded by their idealized image of self, which they’ve fabricated to hide from themselves (and others) innermost doubts about their worthiness. And so they’re driven to portray themselves not simply as good enough but far beyond good enough: gifted, exceptional, unique."
How many of us have known narcissists in our lives? Probably all of us but sometimes we might not have known that's what they are. We humans need our eyes wide open in order to really see.
But the thing I love about my horses, they see things so differently through a lens in ways we humans are not capable of.
They are honest, observant, kind, forgiving, willing, and completely untouched by how beautiful and special they are. They don't brag or judge, condemn or feel contempt. They just are. They are very sentient beings who will give you what you ask for if you ask them in the right way.
Cav, with just his one eye, probably sees more than most people do with two. I love his soul and his quirky personality, because he really does have both, LOL! But that's part of what I love so much about him.
And if you've read all the way to the end here, well, then you are a special friend

The Grim Reaper, sometimes called Death, is a spectral entity in Western mythology said to be the sentient manifestation of death itself. Since the 15th century, Death has been perceived as an animated human skeleton, cloaked in black robes and carrying a scythe. With this scythe, the Reaper severs the soul's last ties to life and grants the soul safe passage to the afterlife. He also carries an hourglass, which represents the sands of time ticking away until his arrival.
The Grim Reaper has often been falsely described as an evil spirit that preys on mortals. In truth, however, he is neither evil nor good, he is simply a force of nature and order. Death is a fundamental part of life and it is the Grim Reaper's duty to claim the souls of the deceased to maintain the balance of nature. He does not "kill" mortals, he simply guides their spirits to the next realm and it is not his place to judge souls or determine what will become of them.

I could get quite close today to this beautiful stray mother cat (I was crawling slowly on the floor). She decided to take a sometimes vigilant nap in front of my parked car. We feed her every day with the neighbours @ the beer factory so she lets me/us closer every day (damn this cutie has endless hunger). Against all my growing bond I feel that we have to keep this sentient beautiful being as wild as possible.

Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar are the only two places in the whole of Tibet that were visited by Lord Buddha, accompanied by five hundred Arhats. During the turning of the Three Wheels of the Dharma, Buddha Shakyamuni extensively explained the merits of building images. So Indra (the king of gods) offered precious articles of the gods, Ananda (the king of Serpents or Nagas) offered precious articles of the Nagas and Bimbisara (the king of Magadh) offered gold and silver, etc. to the Buddha and requested him to have three images of the Buddha made, as a means of generating merit for the sentient beings in the future. The total distance, covered in a complete circumambulation of Mount Kailash according to the route charted by Gotsangpa, is 52km and takes about 13 to 15 hours. It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the passing of Jane Goodall. She was an inspiration to me, as she was to the world, when I was a young biologist
Jane Goodall (1934–2025)
Pioneer, primatologist, and lifelong advocate for animals and the environment. Her groundbreaking work with chimpanzees transformed our understanding of the natural world and inspired generations to protect it. Through the Jane Goodall Institute and Roots & Shoots, her legacy continues to guide us toward compassion, conservation, and hope.
We need more Jane Goodall's in the world. Hopefully her legacy will continue to inspire compassion and our understanding that animals are sentient beings -sharing emotions and connections closer to ours than we dare imaging.
And we must ask ourselves: what are the consequences if we truly accept this?
