Despite being sensitive to air polution lichens are one of our most diverse and widespread life forms and whilst declining in eastern areas they still strive in the west and here in Dorset there are many of them.
Lichens are specialists. Some species use rocks, walls, roof tiles and gravestones as their substrate, others prefer wood and colonise tree trunks and branches, fence posts and wooden buildings. There is also a family of lichen, the Cladonia species where some members colonise bare ground and this one, Cladonia floerkeana is one of those.
Supposedly common on peaty soils on moors and heaths I have only found it once on the Dorset heath but there is quite a lot of heath in Dorset to look at so I am sure I have often missed it.
This species has thin stems with bright red spore producing tips giving them the appearance of matches, hence the common name of Devil's Matchsticks!

Seen on our NC Native Plant Society's spring weekend in the mountains around Saluda. Saw lots of ferns, trilliums, beautiful scenery. and a couple of orchids. Magnificant weather & great company for the hikes.
This fern is sooooo cool!!!! You touch it and the whole branch(?) closes shut! (There is another picture with it closed.)
Note the golfers and golf carts in the background...I guess the sensitive area is just one-tree wide?!

This common roadside weed is native to the American tropics. Its leaves might fold closed when touched, but not as quickly as the pink-flowered hilahila (sensitive plant) it resembles.
Our family had to have some sort of vacation holiday and chose an area of the country that was less densely populated and with lower COVID-19 rates. It also happened to include North Dakota, a state none of us had been to and marks state #49 for Tamara. We had a wonderful trip, got labeled as "Covid-sensitive" at a restaurant (which we now bear as a badge of honor), and got to see and explore a lot of places that in a 'normal' year we probably would have missed out on.
