March-April 2010, I intend to draw a different contemporary artist every day.

Today's artist is American Virginia Hein, who makes beautiful travel sketches, portraits, and landscapes in a variety of media including pen, watercolor, and oil pastel. I enjoy the sure accuracy of her lines, the way she uses color (sometimes only a little bit) and the vivid way she sees and portrays light. I'm in awe of her ability to compress large space onto small paper and keep all the necessary details.

You can see Virginia's artwork on her flickr imagestream:

A sensitive plant in a garden grew,

And the young winds fed it with silver dew,

And it opened its fan-like leaves to the light,

and closed them beneath the kisses of night.

~Percy Bysshe Shelley, "The Sensitive Plant," 1820

This lovely little flower has appeared in my garden this year. Don't know what it is but it wraps itself up tight at night and unfurls in the sun. If anyone has any idea what it is, please let me know.

Both Wendy and Neil's business stems from their own dietary restrictions, and having spent years struggling to accommodate their respective food allergies and intolerances. This was the best of the best in their findings. Really nice to know that there's no longer a need to run around the city for these products. The fact that they're great tasting and that the store is allergen free is also incredible. Sensitive tummies rejoice.

Wikipedia: Narcissus is a genus of predominantly spring flowering perennial plants of the amaryllis family, Amaryllidaceae. Various common names including daffodil,[Note 1] narcissus and jonquil are used to describe all or some members of the genus. Narcissus has conspicuous flowers with six petal-like tepals surmounted by a cup- or trumpet-shaped corona. The flowers are generally white or yellow (also orange or pink in garden varieties), with either uniform or contrasting coloured tepals and corona.

From Chin-Chan's yard. Narcissus flowers are usually white or yellow and are characterized by a narrow, tubular base (hypanthium), three petals and three petal-like sepals (the perianth), and a central cup-like appendage (the corona, cup, or crown) that may be of contrasting color.

Ms. Cheeky's Workshop Exercise # 4: Shoot What You Love

Another candidate for this exercise. Another version posted in the comment below. As you all know by now, it's so hard to get a pictue of my Lisette, unlike Jake. When she just sees a camera, she starts shaking, and has done so since she was a tiny puppy. I've decided to try to get her over t his, or at least to get more pictures of her. And several of you have given me some great suggestions to help-- bring them on. Lisette has such soulful eyes, and such a sense of joy about her. She can also be very serious, as she is here. She is ten years old. I do turn the camera noise off, and give her lots of treats; but the camera and posing are simply dreaded. A few minutes before this photo was taken, she was shaking like a leaf and glassy eyed-- from the camera. One of those photos is posted in the comment below. So we played a little, I praised her, more treats, tried again- and at least I got two better shots of her. She still is stiff- her joy does not quite come through. So the challenge for me was to get a photo that captured her soulfulness. Here she is more serious and curious, having heard a beloved neighbor talking next door. She's looking off in the neighbor's direction.

Her nose used to be very dark black, but as she's getting older, it's getting lighter.

For what it's worth, she's a daughter of Treson, a famous show poodle, who also was terrified of thunder and noises. I guess he was better posing for the camera though, as a show dog. But I think she comes by her fear of many noises genetically. She's an early Treson daughter, one of his first pups after he became famous, bred by his breeder and owner. We have never shown Lisette, pampering her only with a pet's life.

For the exercise: Rule of thirds: tried to get her eyes in the upper right third, but it does not quite make the Rule of Thirds. Usually I crop my pictures closer- so not sure if this works or not. Decluttering- not perfect here, as the garden border is distracting. I could not get her to move closer to the plants and stay relaxed, so this was the best shot I got. And her scarf is a bit distracting- but also adds pizass. The light was from behind me, but she was in the shade of a large tree.

Open to all feedback and criticism and suggestions.

Sensitive Issues

"Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved,

clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility,

gentleness and patience." Colossians 3:12 (NIV)

Humans are tender creatures. All of us are. Even though many times we pretend things don’t bother us, many things really do. I remember a situation that began with a phone call late one night from a frantic wife. She called us for help because she and her husband were having a terrible fight and he was packing to leave.

When we arrived at their home, it was chaotic. She was in the living room with the children. They were all very upset and crying. He was in the garage loading his car to leave. Karen tried to comfort her and I talked to him in the garage.

Here is the short version. The husband was the type of person who hid his personal pain beneath a tough exterior. The more hurt and afraid he felt, the more dominant and intimidating he acted. He’d found out weeks earlier that his wife had some physical problems that were pretty serious. He was concerned and told her to go to the doctor. She didn’t. Every time he reminded her she would just brush him off.

On the night of the fight, he became very dominant and forceful with her about another issue. However, what was really bothering him was the thought that she might die. He cherished her and couldn’t stand the thought that her medical problems might be terminal. His fears took over and emotions got out of control.

As we sat with them and talked things out, she watched him sob uncontrollably as he talked about how much he loved her and how afraid he was something might happen to her. She admitted that the reason she didn’t go to the doctor was because the possible cost. As you can see, both were bothered by something and both of their concerns were valid. However, because they didn’t honestly discuss their feelings, the situation nearly ended in tragedy.

I’ve learned over the years that everything matters. Because of that, I am honest about my feelings and sensitive to Karen’s. I realize that when I’m bothered by something Karen says or does, there is usually more to her behavior.

Rather than reacting to what she says, I’ve learned to pursue what is going on with her on a deeper level. On many occasions, this has kept me from reacting with rejection, withdrawal or verbal aggression. It has also caused me to deeply respect the sensitivity of Karen’s heart and my own as well.

Talk It Out | What underlying issues in your relationship are you reluctant to bring to the surface and talk about? This would be a good time to begin a conversation about sensitive issues that really matter and allow your spouse to see it from your perspective.

Walk It Out | Call your spouse at an unexpected time this week, just to say, “I’m thinking of you.” God bless
