There are now three editions of The Halloween Retrospect for vintage Halloween collector references. Note again these are not visual survey books but instead articles on focused subjects via primary sources that include ~550 catalogs of consumer/vendor materials (1900-1979) as well as company materials across US archives (such as Framingham History Center for THR, V2 or Hallmark Archives for THR, V3).

Volume 2 continues the tradition of researching America’s past Halloween marketplace. The guidebook’s feature article examines Dennison publications with significant finds (about serial numbers on publications) from Framingham History Center. As well, V2 offers information on B. Shackman catalogs, E. Rosen cards, and certain German imports (see cover art).

Raised in Germany during the Hitler years, Mathilde Schmidt had two wishes: to go to a university and to leave Germany for America. Both of these wishes were granted, but her path was not an easy one. She was often confronted with obstacles and even had to endure life-threatening situations. Only her positive attitude, her persistence, and her belief in her own personal "Guardian Angel" pulled her through. When she finally managed to attend a university, she was stopped by the last months of World War II and became a prisoner of war. She was eventually released and sent back to her home country, where her life was threatened by the bombs exploding around her. After the war's devastation she immigrated to the United States where she married, raised a family, continued her studies, and finally became a teacher. Now a grandmother in her eighties with a large extended family, she has written and published her autobiography, from which she read.
