The book can be viewed at the link above.
Designing the book was a very creative process. I made a few small changes, added a few extra pictures and a poem at the end.
I've been taking a break from Flickr but will be slowly returning soon.

As I stand, take steps, hold my camera in my hands, see the sunset light and the road or yard in front of me, press and release the shutter, hear the click of the shutter opening, be mindful that the camera’s sensor is recording the light shining into it, hear the shutter close, feel surprised and inspired by the beautiful images that are captured and shown on the back of my camera and remember that though it seems insignificant this truly is a big victory for me to be moving forward. This all has a deep, helpful, nourishing, inspiring effect on me. It doesn’t magically erase the extreme difficulties and struggles and it does help me survive and move through them in a healthy way.
Moving Forward is a collection of abstract, ICM (intentional camera movement) images taken in moments of desperation, while trying to survive and find a healthy way to cope with the intense effects of trauma, CPTSD, anxiety and depression. The practice of therapeutic photography and healing actions of taking steps and moving forward come together in this photo project. May it be a source of hope, inspiration, peace or encouragement for you.

earlier this year, i decided that i'd surprise v with a self published book based on our blog… i had no idea how much work (several weeks) would go into this project considering all the source material (photos, words) was complete… labor of love… the layouts were particularly difficult for me… but i did solicit some terrific help from my graphic design pals boris and matt…
v loves the book… katie read it cover to cover on monday… copies of the book will be a big player in our xmas gifts this year… You can see a preview of the book here...
www.blurb.com/my/book/detail/928354 (try to ignore the obnoxious price list)
blurb.com is a terrific service… excellent free software for laying out a book… and the pictures in the book printed very well… i can't say enough good things about them…
For me these images are a reminder that beauty can be found in the unknown if I am open to looking for it—sometimes even among the fear, anxiety, depression and terror I experience. And that moving forward can be lived out in many different ways—what is helpful or safe for someone else may not always have a positive impact for me. So through this process I try to keep in mind maybe it’s alright to give myself a little grace, patience and the time and awareness to notice the internal feedback I receive that can help provide these cues and insights.

One summer evening I was having a very challenging time, intensely battling the long-term, ongoing mental health struggles I face each moment of each day. I felt like I couldn’t do anything and also felt like I couldn’t do nothing. Somehow I pushed myself to go outside at sunset. I just started walking down our gravel road in an effort to try to stay somewhat active and try to cope. I had the idea to experiment with ICM (intentional camera movement) by using a slow shutter speed to capture the motion as I was walking. I can’t really put it into words how this was helpful for me. Though the images are very abstract, to me they’re beautiful because they show that I was standing and moving forward even when it felt impossible and I had no idea how I would survive. After I used this method one evening I also naturally repeated the process a few other nights within the next couple weeks as a way to try to help myself cope and survive.

Dear good people of Flickrland! I'm super excited ~and honored~ that a book I made, "one in eight." is a People's Choice Award nominee-finalist in the Documentary category for Blurb's Photo Book Now contest. There are lots of great books in four different categories: Documentary, Travel, Fine Art & Student. I hope you'll consider voting for my book (look for the all-pink cover!) or any of the other wonderful books in any of the categories. (You are allowed one vote in each category.) Thanks so much, and all the best to all of the contestants!
To make it a wee bit easier to cast your vote, here's a direct link to the PBN Documentary category finalists:

(You do have to 'create an account' by giving them an email address, and for that extra step I do apologize... But I hope it won't deter you from voting!)
For me these images contain a lot of meaning. They are an abstract documentation that I engaged in the challenging work to stand and keep moving forward—both externally and internally—when this felt impossible because of the intense struggles I was experiencing at that moment. I tend to find some symbolism in these images. The blur and lack of clarity reminds me the path of growth and healing feels so unclear, foreign, unknown, even scary, overwhelming, very difficult and challenging. And though the journey doesn’t always seem completely visible, one thing I do know is God’s faithful presence and the kindness and care of the small group of very supportive people in my life is with me. That taking one tiny step at a time really is a big thing. It is often excruciatingly difficult and those tiny steps do add up—I’ve seen reassuring proof of this over time. And I still have many moments when I want to quit, that it all seems like too much for me. Sometimes I have to rest (though I find that for me, even rest can require work)—which itself is even a form of moving forward.

Get yours now!
I was overwhelmed by the response to the initial private release of my book, Polar Opposites. It's so exciting, but it also means fewer books are available for public release!
If you wait too long to order, you'll have to wait 6-8 more weeks for the book to be in stock.
It's an amazing problem to have and I never thought it possible. I am so grateful.

"Salt & Light" is my new monograph softcover book, containing the first installment of my "Mojave Monochrome" Project.
These are often called, "Zines." However, calling this publication a zine sells it a bit short. This is a genuine softcover portfolio book, or "monograph." What is a monograph? A monograph is a collection of images and writing from an artist that strives to tell a cohesive visual story through art and writing. It is usually a "project," or series of images created around a central theme.
Why would you want to buy something like this? You view images all the time for free on the internet. However, they rarely fit together to tell a story, much less through creative art. The writing that accompanies most online images is rushed and very brief. This writing is long-form literary prose and is designed to be read slowly and in print. Likewise, my images are created to be seen in person, not on a screen. There is no substitute for holding a printed work of art in your hands in real life. Further, none of the nearly 6000 words of writing in this book is available online, as it was all authored specifically for print. All the images were made on black & white medium format film using the camera in this picture, specifically for this project.
If you would like to join in on my adventures or see a little behind my creative process, this book is an easy and affordable way to do that, and support my work in the process. It is an inspiring, uplifting, and beautiful piece of work that can become a part of your personal library and art collection. I hope you will consider buying one for yourself, and for anyone in your life who may appreciate art and literature.
I'm asking you to please consider enriching your life and supporting my artwork by purchasing one today for just $14.99 for the print edition, or only $7.99 for the digital eBook edition, at lowerylandscapes.com/saltandlight. You know you will enjoy it!

This is the illustration I'm using for my latest short story on my writing project called 500 Ironic Stories. The story is about how a self published author gives away copies of her book to her nephew and nieces. They don't realize there is a surprise inside, which makes unexpected dreams come true. Well I reposted this shot for a number of reasons ...
.... first ... I had the pleasure of winning first place in the "Streetscapes" category in the recent Capture Oakville 2009 competition with this image ...
... secondly ... I have been very busy framing a collection of shots from my Night Moves series which will be exhibited at the Williams Coffee Pub at Trafalgar & Dundas here in Oakville, this image makes up one of my approximately 20 framed shots that will be on display at Williams ...
... thirdly ... I have just finished my first publicly available book through Blurb, entitled "Night Moves Volume I" which highlights the images on display during this upcoming exhibit. The link to the book ... www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/963512
Wish me luck folks ! Sorry I haven't been commenting on your work as I have been busy preparing for the exhibit.

As many of you know, both Marty and I have been deeply affected by our various visits to Vanuatu these past few years. Vanuatu Smiles is the result. We have donated pro bono our images and time to create this visual documentary and ALL THE PROFITS from the sale of this book are going to our chosen charity - Operation Education Vanuatu.
This charity is a registered, not-for-profit, non-government group of volunteers that construct school building and health clinics across communities in Vanuatu.
Vanuatu is one of the least developed countries in the world. They rely on considerable foreign aid to build a sustainable future.
As from today, you can purchase a copy of the book through the Dragon Papillon Photography website to directly support the people of Vanuatu. You can preview the book at our Blurb Storefront. Or drop us a flickr mail if you want to use EFT.

Hello my dears. In the eleventh hour before setting off to Iceland for a second time I entered my first Iceland book blindhæðir in Blurb's PBN contest and I was just told I was nominated for a People's Choice Award. That means I am open for voting in the Travel category - you will have to scroll down and look for it, and it does require email registration in order to cast a vote, I apologize.
I also invite you to share it freely wherever you see fit if you are so moved. I am vying for a $1,500 prize, which I promise to put to good use. Likely making the second Iceland book which I've started writing.
Many thanks for your time and I hope you enjoy the preview. Takk fyrir!
