The new self-checkout stations in the Central Library have a nice, minimalistic look to them. They're also faster, smarter and more functional than the old scan-one-book-at-a-time machines. Now you can fan out all your books, and -- as long as the bar codes are visible from above -- they'll all be scanned and checked out at the same time. Fast and easy.
The latest self-checkout system from Coop. Wooden boxes like from the last century. What were the designers thinking? Switzerland, Dec 26, 2019. (4/5)
Spc. Daija Alexandre, Army Dental Command, uses the register Feb. 28 at one of several self-check stations recently installed at the main exchange. The checkouts, which will be installed at several exchange facilities, is a way to mitigate staff shortages, said Eric Desveaux, AAFES general manager.
I made this photo from behind a line that had been formed by customers waiting in a long line to self checkout at a Safeway Supermarket in San Francisco. If I remember correctly, this market had eight self checkout registers in operation at either of the main doors to the store and only four checkout registers staffed by employees. Of course, there is one store employee at each bank of self checkout registers to help customers and mitigate theft (which is easier at self checkout registers - with the cost offset by savings in employee wages). As a life long unionist, I will not patronize self checkout lines in stores or, now, even in libraries. I remember my father using the term Dog Robber (he being a military man). Though a stretch from the found definitions of the antiquated term, I remember him implying that the term applied to people stealing other people's jobs, such as the common citizens are doing against the paid workers, as this photo documents.
So person at giant eagle who used the self checkout before me. You did almost everything right.
You used the electronic machine, you bought only a pregnancy test. You paid in cash. And then you left the receipt behind, neglecting that I am a creepy stalker and when I find receipts at the machine, I read them, and then post them online.
Yeah. I clowned you.

Seeing how "sugar lips" shots are the new black... and how horrible I'm imagining I would look wearing lipstick - here's my parody on the subject...
Special thanks to PeskyMac for the inspiration!

A Rapture prediction that came out during my recent trip to Krogers grocery store. Their self-checkout kiosk popped out this stamped $1 bill -

Suburban Saturday Rage
I feel that one of the measures of a good/great photo, is not necessarily if it’s pretty or picturesque, but rather, does it convey the feeling or emotion that the photographer intended it to convey. Which brings me to today’s chosen photo.
The idea was to convey how I was feeling for a few hours this morning and early afternoon. It’s a feeling I refer to as Suburban Saturday Rage. Perhaps it began with too little sleep and too little coffee. It might have been related to a strong misty rain, or my ill-fitting T shirt instead of the comfy one I like to wear on Saturdays. It might have started with the goobering Child-Monster climbing all over the deli case at BJ’s.
So let’s rage up our photo emotion a little. Did the rage come from my need to activate my new “Chip” card from the bank, which will no doubt mean I’ll have to update my “stored” card at ½ dozen other places. Or does that infernal Enh Enh Enh alarm sound when using my new chip card just send me over the edge of pissed-off-ness? Maybe it was the choice between long lines or the self-checkout. Maybe the enormous sized boxes and cases of toilet paper and paper towels that require a barn out back of the house just to store them. The coupon clipping and phone app checking to save some much needed and important cash. Full disclosure… I have a good friend who is a MASTER of this and I am very grateful for his finesse and skills. I’m just saying the need for these consumer games in the first place drives me nuts.
I’m not an unhappy guy. Take these same people, and same places, and same activities… and give me a good night’s sleep, some hot coffee, my comfy t-shirt that fits, and some sunshine, and my attitude toward it all would have been entirely different. And today’s photo would have been different too.
So these are the combined sources of Suburban Saturday Rage. And that’s what the photo tries to convey…. The desaturated colors. A feeling of claustrophobia. Not as tack sharp as some of my other photos. The faded effect at the fringes. These were cognizant choices I made in the photo’s presentation. Again, the idea was to take/make a photo that would illustrate how I was feeling. I’m happy with it, but I’ll let you be the judge.
(Project 365 Day 63)
I saw 10 Items or Less Monday night, and so I went to Albertson's to take a picture of their express lane as my project 365 picture as an excuse to review the movie. But I got there, and it turns out they no longer have an express lane. I guess the express lane has been subsumed by the self-checkout machines? Anyway, I'm going to pretend that's an express lane picture and direct you to my mini-review of the movie anyway.

This is Walmart Supercenter # 4350 at 200 Old Fairgrounds Way in Kilmarnock, VA.
Despite opening in 2007, this store feels a smaller than a traditional Supercenter, and lacks a Tire Center. This is the only Walmart store in Virginia's Northern Neck.
This is the other Walmart Supercenter at 6111 Jefferson Ave in Newport News, VA.
This store opened in 2013, and is seeing it's first renovation! Some of the photos from this set show the store with no logo, likely to prepare for the store to be painted and get the updated front logo.
Another test. So far, the horizontal strip format is hard on the eyes here. Maybe this will work out better? I dunno....
Despite the fact that I've worked at a grocery store for 7 years, I've seen this happen surprisingly few times.
